"So, Tobio, how did you and Shouyou meet?" Ms. Hinata asked as she finished setting the dinner table.
"Oh, he often stops by my workplace for a quick drink and snack every so often." Tobio decided to leave out the part where it's always at ungodly hours in the morning. Then again, what was his excuse for working that late anyways?
"Well that's cute. I hope he hasn't annoyed you too much," she laughed, finally taking a seat on the other side of the table. Tobio was seated next to Shouyou on one side, Mrs. Hinata and Natsu on the other. "Now, Tobio, tell me about yourself. What do you do for fun?"
Oh god. An interrogation from a mother.
"I uh- well, I play Volleyball," Kageyama offered an awkward smile.
"That's nice. What about your parents?"
"My dad works all 'round Japan doing business stuff. He's a part of a shoe company. My mom's an accountant."
"Mhm," Ms. Hinata thought for a moment, "do you have any siblings?"
"Just an older sister, Miwa. She's learning how to become a hair stylist."
"Ooh! Can she do my hair!?" Natsu shot up from her seat.
"I'll ask her when she has time," Kageyama replied.
Ms. Hinata smiled at Tobio. Or was she staring him down? He felt mildly uncomfortable.
No, very uncomfortable.
"Mom, leave Tobio alone. He's a good friend. You said so yourself!" Shouyou finally intervened to Tobio's delight.
"She did?" Tobio found himself sidetracked from the earlier conversation already.
"Quite so. So let's enjoy a nice dinner as a family and friend." Shouyou finally said, fairly eloquently at that, like he were royalty.
"Of course, your royal highness," the words had left Tobio's lips before he even had a moment to process what he had said.
Shouyou rolled his eyes and Natsu burst out laughing. Ms. Hinata smiled, which was a win in Tobio's case.
They all ate in a comfortable silence for the next minute or so.
Natsu, how was school today? Do you have any homework?"
"Just some math stuff. It's fine, I'll ask Yui for the answered tomorrow," Natsu spoke, not even realizing she had just admitted to her mother that she would cheat.
"Sorry, what was it you said you were going to do?"
Natsu slowly looked up from her dinner, eyes now wide, realizing her mistake. "Well, I'm going to take it out of my bag, put it on this table, and answer every question by myself without any outside help." She now spoke slowly, and Tobio had to stifle a chuckle.
"That's what I thought."
Tobio could 100% admit that he was very afraid of Ms. Hinata.
After dinner, Tobio called his mom to come pick him up. He bid Shouyou's family goodbye and promised them he would stop by again soon.
Once in his moms car, she began interrogating Tobio.
"So, how was dinner with your new friend?"
"It was fine. His sister is cute."
"Aw, he's got a sister too?"
"Yes, she's still quite young, she'll be going into junior high soon, though."
"Well that's cute. Was dinner good?"
"Yeah," Tobio smiled and payed his arm on the window to his side. He looked out and into the the world. It somehow didn't feel so big after everything.
It felt small.
Peaceful.
Happy.
But the world wasn't actually small. And it was anything up peaceful and happy. Tobio knew that. But it felt good imagining it. And it never felt that hard when he was with Shouyou.
Shouyou whatever is going on with you I swear, it's going to end. I'll make sure of it.
No one should be able to get away with what they've done to you. That's not fair, especially to you.
You deserve everything.
