Shouyou's mom sounded groggy. Given the time, it made sense as to why she would sound that way. Shouyou didn't even know the exact time, just that it was late.
"Hello?" The woman asked, yawning soon after.
"Hi mom," Shouyou spoke, wearily.
"Sweetie? What time is it? What are you doing up at this hour? Did something happen?" Her voice now sounded more hurried, she seemingly adjusted herself in her bed to get more comfortable.
"I just," Shouyou tried to hold back tears, "I need you to pick me up."
He felt so shitty. Here he was obviously inconveniencing Tobio and now he was doing the same thing to his own mother.
"Why? What happened? Where's your dad?"
"Mom, please. I really need you" He felt warm droplets of water make their way down his face as he spoke.
"O-okay," she stammered out. Shouyou could hear a few creaks from the other line, signaling that she was getting out of bed and readying to leave the house.
"You're still at your dad's, right?"
"No," Shouyou choked out.
The woman took a deep breath in and out, allowing herself to calm down a bit, "Alright. Can you tell me where you are?"
Shouyou looked over at Kageyama who was looking over at him while taking a few bites of his food.
"What's your address?" Shouyou half mouthed and half whispered to the other.
"Ah, 1111 xxxxxx rd," He spoke almost immediately.
Shouyou repeated the address, letting his mom type it into her phone as the jingling of her car keys could be heard and she opened the door to leave.
"Got it. Do you want to stay on the phone with me? Are you with someone?"
"I'm really sorry," Shouyou cried out. He felt so pathetic.
"Hey, hey, don't be. I'm your mom, it's my job to rush to you when you need help. Now tell me, are you with someone?"
"Yeah," he answered after a few seconds.
"Good. What's their name?" Shouyou heard the car engine start in the background.
"Tobio," he replied. Kageyama's eyes widened at the mention of his name, waiting for something else to be said. Shouyou just lightly waved it off with his hand.
"That's a nice name. Is he a friend of yours?"
Shouyou opened his mouth to answer before catching himself. Were they friends?
"I don't really know."
"Are you at his house?"
"Yeah."
"That sounds like a real good friend to me," Shouyou could hear her smile from his end of the line, even though he couldn't see it.
"Yeah. Probably." He looked down then over at Tobio.
Tobio could've sworn he saw Shouyou's eyes soften at the sight of him.
"I'm on my way. I'll be there in 10 minutes. Think you can hold down the fort while I'm on the way? Or do you just want to stay on the phone with me? Don't worry about inconveniencing me. It doesn't matter."
Shouyou took a few deep breathes. His mother always knew the right words to say. He was far too lucky to have someone like her in his life.
"I... I can hold down the fort. Thanks mom," he finally replied.
"Always sweetie. See you in 10,"
"See you." He kept the phone up to his ear u til he heard in infamous end call noise emit from the phone.
"Is she coming?" Tobio asked, anticipation made him look old.
"Yeah," Shouyou let his shoulders relax as he fell down into his chair and had his first bite of ramen, "she is."
