Tobio walked to the front of Karasuno's courtyard in a hurry after the final bell rang. He knew something was happening with Shouyou but he couldn't quite place it. But whatever it was, he had his friends to help him.
"Ah, Kageyama," Daichi called from a few meters away. Tobio looked over to face the two member of his volleyball team he had been waiting for. When he turned around, he watches as their faces morphed into some other form of worry.
Tobio had been over cautious since his interaction with the two boys Shouyou knew. He had been scratching at his head and biting his lips all day, both habits he had that followed him throughout his life. So yeah, he looked a little shitty.
"Kageyama, are you okay?" Sugawara asked, placing a hand on Tobios shoulder.
"Let's go somewhere more private," Daichi interrupted. Tobio nodded his head in agreement.
The three of them left the crowded courtyard and made their way over to an unused stairwell. It wasn't far from the track where Shouyou had agreed to play cards with the two boys.
"So," Daichi started, "what exactly has you this worked up?"
"Well, I think it's pretty safe to say that I made a really good friend. He's smart and funny, but he's always been kinda... off. I mean, the first time I met him he came to the café I work at at one in the morning."
"Jesus."
"Oh- and his dad kicked him out and he was living who even knows where for like- three days. He's been distant from literally everyone from day one. He made me call him by his first name when I first met him and I didn't even know I was doing that until fucking Yamaguchi told me his last name. And god, these boys, they said they were 'pals' with Shouyou but in what world would someone be physically shaking when confronted with a 'pal'!? God, even the name 'pal' sounds fake. And what they called us, god, I can't shake it off I know it wasn't good. I wish I was paying attention but I was just so caught off guard. What was it- shit. Fezzit? Back-if? Jesus, I'm losing it."
Tobio was spiraling, everyone could see it. He paced back and forth and scarred the back of his head.
"Kageyama, come on, take a few deep breaths," Sugawara finally spoke, breaking Tobio from his trance.
Tobio looked over and faced Sugawara. He was overemphasizing his chest as he breathed so Tobio could follow in suit. Tobio closed his eyes and took one large breath.
"Let's sit down. Come on, what do you think it was those kids said when they came up to you?"
Tobio took a seat on the second stair from the ground. He nervously patted his thigh in an attempt at concentration.
"I really don't know. Feckit?"
Tobio looked over to Sugawara and Daichi for some form of recognition at his use of a word.
Then, like a lightbulb, Daichi's face slowly contorted from confusion to utter disbelief.
"Kageyama, be as honest as you possibly can when I ask you this. Did they call you.." he looked around the stairwell and lowered his voice, "..a faggot?"
Sugawara sucked in a breath.
"I-" Tobio thought for half a second, "yes, yes. That is exactly what that 'Yui' said. What does it mean?"
"Kageyama we..." Sugawara began but paused. He shared a look with Daichi before continuing, "hate to be the ones to tell you this but, that's a slur."
"What?"
"A kind of bad one. It's used against, um, gay people."
