Yui dealt the first cards.
"Who ever has the least amount of cards after three rounds wins."
Shouyou could feel his hands shaking. He slowly placed each card on top of one another, flipping over the last card on each pile. He let out a sigh of relief when he saw he had two sevens. He placed the seven from the larger of his piles on the seven from the smaller.
"Ready?" Yui asked, taking Shouyou out of his trance. Shouyou nodded and put the last of his cards in a pile next to Yui's. They flipped the first cards over and began playing. A four and a ten.
-
"What do you mean he's not here? I thought you said he would be here," Daichi questioned.
"I know. That Yui guy said they'd meet here, I know it! Where the hell are they!?" Tobio grabbed Sugawara by his shirt and just barely lifted him so they were face to face.
Daichi was first to react, pulling Tobio away by his arms and leaving Sugawara back on the heels of his feet.
"Kageyama! I get you're angry but we have to think rationally."
-
Yui was the first to get rid of his cards, but Shouyou was the first to slap the smallest pile of what had been built. He still had four cards left, and the piles weren't all that different in size, but he took it as a win.
Yui glared at Shouyou.
-
"Where do you think he would be?" Sugawara interrupted Daichi's scolding.
"I-I don't know."
"Come on. You know him better than anyone else. Think, Kageyama."
"Fuck," Tobio exclaimed as he ran his fingers through his hair. It was knotted and most definitely impossible to fully get his hands through. When he couldn't pull his hands any further through his hair, he grasped it and held his head with his palms.
"Come on, where would he be if not here at school?"
Tobio thought, then, like a lightbulb, his eyes widened and he pulled his hands away from his hair.
Before anyone could say anything else, Tobio began sprinting to the playground he had seen Shouyou all those times before.
"Kageyama Tobio! Where are we going!?
"It's a playground. A small, children's playground, but he like— loves it there.
"Are you sure?"
Kageyama paused his running, causing Daichi and Sugawara stop and almost lose their balance."
"No, I'm not."
-
Yui won the second round. A full win. He lost all his cards and hit the smallest card deck.
Shouyou stared down at his leftover cards. Five. He swallowed. He knew that Yui didn't just want Kaito and him to start dating again. He wanted to publicly humiliate Shouyou by any means necessary.
He looked back up to Yui who was mindlessly smiling.
He took a deep breath in and out. And he took his deck of cards.
He shuffled them with his utmost precision. And laid each card out in front of him as much confidence as he could muster.
"You done yet?" Yui said, almost breaking Shouyous concentration.
"Mhm," Shouyou responded, placing the last of his cards in a pile between the two of them.
"Then we begin."
They each flipped over the top cards to the two decks.
Everything went by so fast, unlike everything else seemed to be happening in his life.
His eyes felt weirdly strained as he intently watched the two piles and his own piles grow and shrink. He made sure to check Yui's cards every few seconds as well.
They continued until Shouyou was out of cards. Shouyou quickly placed his final card down and slapped his hand down on the same, and exponentially smaller pile.
All it takes is one game to turn the turn the tides.
He looked back up to face Yui.
He felt his breathing grow faster.
Yui stood. He walked over to Shouyou.
And then he punched.
-
"What the fuck do you think you're doing!?"
