M E S S I A H
My eyes shifted to the packed and taped boxes we had just finished working on, that were stacked perfectly on top of each other in the living room. Six filled with clothes and sanitary things, and the other six with school supplies, and now I was busy filling the last of the six that contained food such as canned goods, snacks, juices, etc, just all the shit that don't need a fridge to survive.
While staring at these boxes a thought came into mind, and it had me shifting in the kitchen where I now stood before the island to look at her, but before I could ask she spoke.
"That's Keylen's right?" She asked with a lift of her pen to the checklist she was writing on to motion to my box, leaving me to pull back slightly to gaze at the labeled name.
"Yeah," I confirmed, and my answer had her reaching into a bag on the right to remove a paper bag.
"Put this in his box," She instructed with a stretch of the brown paper bag and I did as told, releasing it inside with the rest of the stuff.
"What's in it?" I questioned curiously as I began to close up the box with a grab of the tape.
"Money," She replied, sounding distracted as she returned her attention to her checklist.
"I don't think I've ever heard of Keylen," I mused as I taped the box closed. "What's he like?"
"Quiet," She replied simply and I glanced in her direction to find her still writing. "The only quiet one I got this year,"
"That makes him special?" I asked and she hummed thoughtfully.
"Special, I'm not too sure that's the word, but the quiet ones are the ones you have to watch. The ones you are loud use anger as an outlet and although its not best solution or way to handle things, its still an outlet for what they're going through but the quiet ones never release and if they do its usually by slitting their wrists or suicide," She explained and I frowned as I took in her words while simultaneously placing the tape down.
"Who he living with?"
"The school is checking out his home situation so I should now soon, on the registration files it says he's with his mother and father but sometimes that changes without anyone knowing and the kids are in a house by themselves or even worse," She informed me and I lifted the box as my mind dwelled on the reality even though it wasn't a foreign one to me. I mean I grew up with friends like that, Ky lived like that, but it never did stop the shock and other emotions that ran through you at the fact.
The releasing of the box with the others, had the thought I had earlier intercepting my mess of emotions, and this time I took the time to voice it as I began to return to the kitchen.
"How you gon have these boxes transferred?" I asked because even though their weight could be moved around, they were too much to fit in her car to make one trip to the school.
"I usually get my co-worker, Denise to help out with transportation and we bring them to school over a three day period,"
"Isn't that a bit tedious?" I asked as I settled beside her, watching as she covered her pen before placing it down on the counter.
"Yes, but it's cheaper," She elaborated and I looked over to the boxes once again, while remembering her saying earlier that she has a few more shit to do for the care packages, which meant there was bound to be more boxes.
"Next time you gon do it, call me and I'll take care of it," I told her as I returned my orbs to her and she raised her eyebrows in surprise at my offer.
"Thank you," She accepted as her eyebrows fell and I smiled as her reaction to my words replayed in my mind once again.
"I love that you know how to accept help when you need it," I told her as I turned to rest my side against the island with a wrap of my arm around her waist. "That's something I be working on,"
