"The girl he loves is like midnight, like the blue of the sea cradled by the moonlight. The girl he loves is verdant, the very green of the hill kissed by the summer delight. The girl he loves is coral, as pink as the roses that grow in his mother's garden. The girl he loves is crimson, red like the autumn leaves that lay abandoned."
~ Nikita GillCHAPTER THIRTY~ONE.
The next day, 4:03p.m.
I squeeze Jeremy's hand tighter, in hopes that he can even feel it. Charlie called this morning and told me that Jeremy had fallen into a coma over night. I watch his heartbeat on the monitor, my heart skips a beat every time it slows down. I run my fingers through his dirty hair, pulling out a few leaves that managed to stay. I rub his warm hand with my thumb. "I miss you Jeremy."
I sigh and watch his eyes twitch, I hope he's having a good dream. "I miss mom. I wish dad was still here, he would know what to do. Maybe I should give him a call. That's probably the stupidest idea I've ever had. I doubt he's even getting my messages. The last time I called him was the day of moms funeral." I grin and let out a soft chuckle. "Dad always told the worst dad jokes ever, but they never failed to make us roll our eyes and laugh. My favorite of his was probably What do you call someone with no body and no nose? Nobody knows. It's so stupid."
I pull my phone out and scroll down my contacts until I find dads. I click the call button and chew on the inside of my cheek. My heart feels like it's going to burst out of my chest. The ring stops, making my heart skip a beat, until I realize it just goes straight to voicemail. "You've reached Mikey Teller, leave a message." My dads voice booms. It's been so long since I've heard his voice.
"Hey dad," I hop up off the chair and pace around the room. "It's Paisley. Not that you care." I murmur the last part. "I.. just thought you should know that Jeremy was shot and fell into a coma last night." I twirl my hair around my finger anxiously, "Um, I hope your getting my messages. I-uh miss you, hope you know that. Bye dad." I end the call and lay my phone on the table next to Jeremy. I wish he'd call back. Could he really give a crap about us? Was he just fake? Did all those years really mean nothing to him?
I curl into the chair beside Jeremy, grasping his hand in mine. So many thoughts flood through my mind. I chew on my bottom lip to the point it starts to bleed.
"Paisley." A soft voice brings me out of my thoughts. My head snaps towards the open door.
My eyes fill with tears, "Holly?" my voice cracks.
A light smile tugs at her lips, "Hey Paisley."
I push myself out of the chair and stumble over to her. "Is it really you? Or am I dreaming?"
