Waking up at 7 a.m. proved to be much more challenging than I recalled. There was a time when this was the hour I would rise for school, filled with a mix of anticipation and dread for a day of classes. Now, however, the early morning was dedicated to pursuing my passion for dramas, and I found myself far more excited about this creative endeavour than I ever was about academics.
As I dragged myself out of bed, the soft glow of the morning sun streamed through my window, illuminating the clutter of my room and casting a warm, golden hue over everything. I pushed through the grogginess, splashed some cold water on my face, and began the familiar routine of getting dressed. I rummaged through my wardrobe, carefully selecting an outfit that would be both comfortable and appealing for the camera.
By the time I finally finished grooming myself and stood in front of the mirror, feeling somewhat presentable, I noticed that my manager had already made themselves at home inside my apartment. The sound of their bustling around in the kitchen—most likely preparing coffee—was my subtle reminder that today was going to be a busy day filled with rehearsals and planning.
"Come on. We have to be there for 8:30." He announced as he rushed me through my apartment.
"At least let me eat a banana hyung." I sighed as I picked a banana up out of my fruit bowl, and rushed out of my apartment.
We went down the stairs in a hurry, and into my managers car. I was immediately setting up my Bluetooth to the car. The drive to the directors location was at least 45 minutes. Yet, the traffic could be bad at this time in the morning so we always leave earlier. I used the music playlist to wake myself up more, and to mess around to get my energy up.
"Hyung, what's on my schedule after the directors meeting?" I asked as we were slowing at a traffic light.
"Not sure. You can attend to more auditions, or go through that massively large pile of emails you have..." He said, lacking any humour. He just really wanted me to answer my emails.
"No thanks hyung." I said, the notifications of emails were nearing the 10's of thousands. I would do them all later on.
"You need to go through them eventually." He said dejected, "They could be important."
"Sure." I agreed half-heartedly, "Anyway, if I can, I might spend more time with the directors to ask some questions."
"That's fine. You need to remember that your filming an advertisement tomorrow." He said and we were off driving again.
As we approached the towering corporate building, its sleek glass façade reflected the bustling city around us. My manager guided me through the building, where we came to a conference room. Inside, the atmosphere was both intimidating and impressive. A spacious office room housed a massive oval table, polished to perfection, surrounded by an array of well-dressed individuals. Men in crisp, tailored suits and women in elegant dresses adorned with statement jewellery sat confidently around the table, their demeanour exuding professionalism.
I stood at the entrance, acutely aware of my own attire. Clad in simple black pants and a loose, white dress shirt that hung untucked, I felt a wave of self-consciousness wash over me. As we entered the room, all eyes turned towards us. I instinctively bowed my head slightly in a gesture of respect, and to my surprise, they reacted warmly — rising to their feet with bright smiles that softened the tension in the air. It was a moment that leaped from intimidation to a sense of belonging, if only fleetingly, as I took my place among them.
"Ah! Korain-ssi! Nice to finally meet you, I'm Director Sang-Hyeop!" The director was the only person not dressed in a suit, and he stood up and came over to me.
I bowed politely, "Nice to meet you Director-nim."
I took a seat at the table, where I was handed a file. On the inside was the script of the whole show, and there was also a schedule for filming and for scenes etc. It was all very well prepared. I was super excited to be filming. I read the short side of the explaination of the show:
In the initial phase of the show, your character is portrayed as a high school student, navigating the complexities of adolescence. This foundational aspect of his identity shapes much of his journey throughout the series. As the narrative unfolds, we witness his transformation into adulthood, grappling with the challenges and excitement that come with it. A significant plotline revolves around his romantic involvement with an older woman. While the relationship might spark controversy due to their age difference, it's essential to highlight that there's nothing illegal about their connection. The romance itself is depicted as a tender exploration of feelings—a young man on the cusp of self-discovery, seeking to understand his desires and an older woman who finds herself yearning for escape from her own life. Their dynamic beautifully illustrates the complexities of love, yearning, and personal growth against the backdrop of a coming-of-age story.
"Korain-ssi, as a few weeks pass, you'll have time to read through the script. If you have any questions about something, there's a phone number provided on the last page. The number belongs to the screenplay writer and the story writer." The director announced and I skipped to the last page to see the number and emails.
"Thank you sir." I smiled, "Can you tell me more about my character?"
"Your 17 at the start of the show, and your in your final year of school. You're smart, and your dream is to become a scientist. It would do you some good to do your own research on biology. You end up meeting an older scientist on a school trip, and she is your love interest. The show goes on to tell about your growing relationship with her after a number of years etc."
I nodded. The own research into science was a bit dull in my opinion, but I would learn with an open mind and heart. I probably wont need to learn lots, because the show will teach me everything I need to know but if the director wants me to look into biology, then I will.
"For the next hour, we're going to go through all the details with you. If you wish to write them down, please do."
My manager handed me a pen and his little booklet where he wrote down details and such for my schedule. I looked at him and he smiled like an idiot. I rolled my eyes.
"In terms of your appearance, we're going to leave your hair as normal. You'll be given a school uniform so we'll get your sizes in a few weeks time. In terms of locations, there will be high school scenes which take place in Seoul, and the school trip will take place in Busan. There will be a lot of travelling which we hope your prepared for. A lot of other scenes will take place in both Busan and Seoul. Your schedule will tell you everything."
"Yes. Also, your co-stars will have this meeting too. We will have a read-through of the script in a few weeks. In the meant time, you will have time to meet your-co-stars in another meeting without the director present." Another women stated with a smile, and I smiled with a nod.
"Director-nim, I have a question."
"What is it Korain-ssi?" The director smiled.
"Who is singing the OST?"
