Memories Begin in Summer

Chapter 6: Maki

It's been days since Sid and I had a conversation. Since that day I've told him we can't be friends, hindi na ulit kami nag-usap. I kind of felt bad, though. For days, my words towards him bothered me so much. Sobrang naguguilty ako. 

Seeing him earlier after he got out of the tricycle didn't help me either. When he smiled at me, my immediate response was to look away. I can't find the courage to smile at him after the words I've said. I don't know kung ano ang inisip niya noong umiwas ako ng tingin. Maybe he still thinks that I hate him. 

Well... It turns out, I don't hate him. At all. 

I would be lying to myself if I say that I am uncomfortable when I'm with him. Actually, I enjoy his company. He is nice, bubbly and fun to be with. Ako lang ang may problema. 

I am not used to people being so worked up to make friends with me. If I said no, then people wouldn't push themselves to me anymore. Si Kira lang talaga ang mapilit na mag-stay sa buhay ko. 

When I noticed the sky getting darker, niyaya ko na si Yumi sa loob. Sa sobrang bored ko, pinanood ko na lang sila ni Bella at ng mga friends nila na maglaro buong araw. Sinasali nila ako sometimes, pero ako din ang umaayaw. I cannot match their energy. Sobrang hyper nila. 

Hindi rin naman ako pwedeng umalis nang walang kasama. I'm so bad at remembering directions. I needed someone who's familliar with this place. Stupid me, I pushed away the only person that could accompany me. No choice tuloy ako, kung hindi magstay sa bahay. 

We had our dinner, and like usual, we're casually talking about our days. Uncle Jojo updated us about their crops, Mama shared us about her day in Manila, and Yumi told everything that happened to her today. Ako lang ang nanatiling tahimik dahil wala rin naman akong ikwekwento. 

"Ikaw, Makisig?" pagtawag sa'kin ni Lola. "Wala ka bang ikwekwento?"

Umiling ako. "Nothing really happened in my day, Lola."

"Bakit? Hindi na ba kayo ulit lumabas ni Sid?" tanong niya. 

I glanced at Mom, and saw her looking at me as she wait for my answer. Her face says that she had a gist of what I did.

 "Uhm..."

"Busy kasi si Sid, Nay. Sabi sa'kin ni  Carla, tumutulong daw si Sid ngayon sa pwesto nila sa palengke." pagsalo ni Mama sa'kin. I smiled at her, and she gave a half-smile before continuing her food. 

Mag-uusap kami mamaya or bukas, that's for sure. 

Lola nodded. "Napaka-buti talaga nang bata na 'yan! Sobrang matulungin, lalo sa magulang! Hindi talaga ako nagkamali na siya ang ipasama ko kay Maki!" 

I gave her a short smile before finishing my food. After our dinner, I went upstairs to brush my teeth and do my skincare. After that, pumunta na ako sa kwarto ko para humiga. Hindi pa ako inaantok so I tried to call Kira.
