Wes

"Predictions on how long you think it's gonna take for an argument to break out?" Kane asks as we get out of his Range and walk up towards the door of our parents house.

"I give it five minutes. He's definitely going to have something to say the minute we walk in that door." I huff preparing myself. Family dinners with the parents aren't the funnest things to endure. Dad almost always has something negative to say, we get in a argument and mum gets upset.

It's why I'm so grateful for the Sunday dinners we have as a friend group. Makes having a dysfunctional family hurt less.

Kane sighs as he rings the door bell, holding the flowers he bought for mum in his hands. I shove my hands in my pockets, bracing myself for the heated  interaction I will no doubt be facing.

The door opens and it's mum. She smiles brightly at us, her eyes lighting up as she forcefully pulls both my brother and I in by our arms to give us a big hug.

"My boys." She sighs contently as her arms remain hooked around us.

"For you." Kane says passing mum the flowers

"Thank you lovely." She pouts happily as she ushers us in. I close the door behind me and follow her and Kane down the hall towards the kitchen.

"House looks good mum." I say as I take in what's around me. Mums an interior designer. Got a great eye for what looks good and what doesn't in a home.

Our childhood home is very big, which allows mum to really get into her creative flow. With so many rooms to re-design and extensions to make, she's never bored. I find comfort in that. Knowing she's occupying herself instead of being stuck in the house hoping dad might come back one night and suddenly be a good husband by paying attention to her.

"Thanks sweetie." She smiles proudly. Places her flowers on the kitchen island and immediately walks over to one of the cabinets to grab a vase.

"So, boys. How have you been?" She asks us as she arranges her flowers.

Kane and I both take a seat at the kitchen table.

"Alright." I shrug.

She looks to Kane for his answer.

"Good." He smiles at her softly.

"Oh how I've missed you two." She walks over to Kane first to squeeze his cheeks. Hugs him tightly. And then she comes over to me. Hugs me tightly and ruffles my hair.

"You need to come over more." She moves back to where her flowers are. Her face a bit sad.

I look down at my hands. "Yeah, I know mum. It's just....you know." I don't even have to finish my sentence she nods showing she understands. With a dad like ours, it's hard to be around him. Meaning mum loses out because we don't come over as much just to avoid him.

She plasters on a smile as she looks at us. "Let's go sit in the living room while we wait for your dad. He's on his way. Dinners not ready yet anyways." She states.

My brother and I stand to our feet and follow her to the living room.

"No chef today then?" I ask sitting down on the couch.
