Prologue
Eevon

I'm supposed to be the helpful one, the kind one, the only person who understands me one, but I'm really not. I just listen; I nod in the right places; I cry with the person and I lend a hand. I don't want to do it, but it needs to be done by someone and I don't see anyone volunteering.

In case you haven't guessed my name by now, it's Eevon. I'm a girl that just wants to mind her own business and survive in this harsh world we call life. Not the easiest thing a person can do.
I've been in this place as long as I can remember. This place is The North Street Orphanage, home to the one and only, me. It's not like all of the orphanages you read about in books. The food is not great, but its better than school food. The beds are similar to camp cots, but they are beds without lice or bedbugs. The roof doesn't leak, there are no rats in the basement, to my knowledge, and we don't have to work our butts off for a meal. Overall, The North Street Orphanage is not a bad place, but that doesn't mean it's good either.

There's a small library. It has so much dust, though on all of the books that it looks like it hasn't been touched for centuries. The "library" consists of about a hundred books, so it's not much of a library. Every single book in there has been read. It's not a lot considering I've been here fourteen years.

Fourteen years is a long time not to be adopted. I don't try to be adopted anymore. I'm too old now. Every one wants the babies and cute little kids. No one wants a teenager. I might as well be invisible.

I've considered killing myself. Who would notice? It would be one less mouth to feed. I've never done it or I wouldn't be writing this now.
