I've always been a cautious person, causing many people to believe that I'm rude or introverted.
Especially once I turned 16. When a person turns 16, they are informed in a dream of their magical power. That is, if they don't have one already. Some people develop their power earlier than others.
My power is mind reading. It only works by touch. If I barely touch a person, I can see their current thoughts. A handshake provides a copy of all their recent important memories to me.
While people think I'm disrespectful when I refuse a handshake, I'm actually respecting their privacy. I only shake hands with likely suspects.
That's right, I'm a police officer, and I am currently sitting in a hotel room, we've finally met the famous detective L, for the Kira Case.
He decided to question each of us in private before letting us go for the day. Everyone else has already left, besides Matsuda, who is the last person to talk to L besides me.
I had been debating on whether I should tell the detective about my magical power, I've never told anyone, not even my parents.
Considering the difficulty of this particular case, I decided that I would tell only L.
"I do have a secret I want to disclose with you Ryuzaki. You should know that my magical power is mind reading through touch."
"How does it work?"
"A light touch or passing touch allows me to see what a person is thinking at the moment. A handshake allows me to see important recent memories. Holding someone essentially gives me their life story. That's the reason I don't shake hands unless I'm suspicious of someone."
He told me what he wanted to do before sending me away.
I went home, thinking about what Ryuzaki had said at the meeting. It was the idea of utilizing the media to announce a substantial number of investigators entering Japan.
I don't think Kira would fall for something like that. Whoever he is, he's clever. He had observed the agent following him rather early on in their investigation, based on the evidence we have.
That was without a reason to expect someone trailing him. Those agents were brought in without anyone knowing. So why would Kira suddenly believe such an announcement to be real?
My only guess was that L had been testing us with that suggestion.
Anyone who would have spoken up on the flawed nature of the suggestion would have likely been scrutinized by the genius I couldn't stop thinking about.
The days went by, and Ryuzaki continued moving from hotel to hotel. To ensure the privacy of the investigation, he'd take over an entire floor and allow us use of the suites if we lived too far away from the current headquarters.
Considering I lived on the other side of Tokyo from the hotels he'd choose, I'd frequently accept the offer. The others would usually head home, since many of them lived close by.
This allowed me several nights where I was largely alone with the man.
Since there was only so much evidence to go over, we would frequently just sit and talk after going over everything one more time.
Every so often, we'd discuss our thoughts on the case. Things either of us had noticed, or theories we had that the rest of the taskforce would disapprove of.
I was the person he initially confided his suspicions of Chief Yagami's son Light.
I looked over Light's info sheet, not knowing him personally. I agreed that he fit the profile we've come up with. Obvious intelligence, desire to be a detective. He fits the age group perfectly, and his position as the son of the Chief of police grants his access to information he shouldn't have. He also has knowledge of how the police work, not only because of his father, but due to his assistance in some cases.
I was the one to suggest catching him in the act, leading the failed surveillance upon the Yagami home.
The case wasn't the only thing we talked about, though. We also exchanged small stories of our youth. There were no details in our stories to indicate where we were from. Each story took place in basic places. The parks near our homes, a sweets shop, or our bedrooms.
I learned of his difficulty in making friends, and how he had often attacked others when he was young. I told him the difficulty in making friends because I couldn't talk to my peers on their level. I was at a higher level and didn't like having to hide my intelligence.
As I learned more small details about the man, I was so fascinated by, I began to fall in love with him. It wasn't hard to begin to care for the detective who clearly hadn't had an easy life.
On April 18th, I took Ryuzaki to another suite and stayed with him as he sobbed, the stress of the case takings its toll on him. Especially after Ukita was killed.
He had been criticizing himself for the officers' death. I comforted him and told him that everything will be alright.
Once he calmed down, I informed him that he was not responsible for Ukita's death.
Together, we watched the tapes, and L came to the conclusion that this was the work of a second Kira.
We returned to the main suite and L explained what was on the tapes and had them authorize the airing of the 4th tape, which would tell this Kira that we would not assist him in his criminal behaviour.
The day after our response aired, Chief Yagami returned from the police station.
Director Kitamura had been in contact with ICPO. Our member nations have come to the consensus that L was the one selected to be killed.
The detective surprised everyone else when he announced the possibility of this being a different Kira than the one we've been dealing with.
He explained that this new Kira had killed lesser criminals that the original didn't bother with. The unknown Kira wanted to make sure that the people they killed weren't likely to be killed by the first.
L also asked the chief permission to bring Light into the investigation.
While the other men were distracted, L asked me to run a few errands, and make sure I returned after Light was already here.I did as he wanted and made sure I was fashionably late to greet our newest member.
I held my hand out as I introduced myself by the alias I was using here. The 18 year old's eyes lit up in interest when he looked at me.
I know that I am relatively pretty and look younger than my 23 years.
He took the bait and gave me a drawn-out handshake while stating that he hadn't expected to see such a beautiful young woman in the taskforce.
I could see L giving the teen a dark look when he mentioned my appearance.
L took the teen to work on a response to copycat, and I thought about everything I had just seen.
Now, I just need to tell L, so we can get to planning.
