Finally

I woke up to the distinct lack of sounds.

Trying to shake away the mental fog, I sit up and glance at the clock.

It was very early. Only about six in the morning. I look around, confused for a moment.

I was in the bedroom at headquarters, and I mentally went through recent events in my head.

We had finally gotten the evidence we needed to prove that Light was Kira, and we had enough evidence to prove that Misa was being manipulated by the teen.

It all started when Misa had been freed after we received Higuchi's Death Note.

Light had led Misa to the entrance and spoke softly to her, not thinking for a moment that L had highly sensitive wiretaps all over the room.

He told Misa exactly where to go to find his hidden notebook. He also told her to wait a few days before getting it.

The next day I left the building at lunch to go on some errands. I was actually retrieving the notebook and a letter written by Light.

We detained Misa and had a judge sign off on sending her to a correctional facility.

I returned and presented the letter and notebook to L that night.

The next morning we presented the new evidence to the taskforce, and Aizawa, whom arrived to act as the arresting officer.

Nobody, not even Light could refute the evidence we had against him. He was arrested on the spot.

That was yesterday. The rest of the day was spent collecting all the evidence, except the killer notebooks.

I got out of bed and got dressed. It was rather chilly this morning, so I donned my slippers and my robe.

I made my way into the monitor room and found it empty. I had the feeling I knew where I could find the detective.

As I had expected, I found L out of the rooftop, his favorite place to go to think without being bothered.

I walked towards him, but stopped a few feet away. He didn't even have to turn to know it was me.

"Light had so much potential to be a great detective. He could have been nearly as good as me. It's like B all over again..." L stated.

I gave a silent sigh and walked over to him. I wrapped my arms around my boyfriend.

He always hates it when he comes across a criminal that had such potential to become something great. Light was not the first one we have dealt with.

"You had nothing to do with Light's behavior, just like you had nothing to do with B's. They chose their dark paths. Not you. You were just the one to stop them. They are the ones that chose to kill. Not you."

"...It could have been me, though. I could have turned out just as corrupt as they did. I even had more reason to be a criminal than Light did. He had a loving home. He had good role models."

I turned the dark-haired man so that he was facing me. I gave him a gentle smile and tenderly stroke his cheek.

"That just shows how amazing you are L. You had a horrible home life. A horrible early childhood. Yet you overcame all of that to become the amazing man you are today. You could have turned out just like your parents. Abusive and full of jealousy and hate. But you didn't. You are loving, you are kind. You have become the kind of man that stops people like your parents. Like Light. You are a protector. You do everything you can to make the world a better place. I am so proud of you."

He gave me a grateful look as he wrapped his arms around me.

"How do you always know just what to say?" He asked.

"I know you honey, and I'm only speaking the truth. You have come a long way from the orphaned boy that Watari found.

"It's all because of you and Watari. Watari found me and took me in from the streets. But you (First Name), you taught me about friendship. Then you taught me about love. You taught me how to trust, and how to be happy. I never had that before I met you. Thank you sweetheart. I love you."

"I love you too L. Always."

We stood on the rooftop, arms around each other. Together we watched the sunrise. It was beautiful, and such a relaxing and sweet moment.

We left the rooftop and L wandered into the monitor room. I went into the kitchen to make us some coffee and pancakes.

After everything was ready I made my way into the monitor room and sat his food in front of him.

I glanced over at my boyfriend and noticed that he seemed to be in a better mood than he was when I found him.

"Tying up loose ends?" I asked.

"That and writing up the report for Wammys." L replied, as he stabbed one of the strawberries I placed on top of the pancakes. I took my first bite before replying.

"Speaking of Wammys, you might want to message the boys. Let them know where still alive and things are wrapping up."

"Yeah, that might be a good idea. We are going home soon."

I grinned at my boyfriend, thinking about home. My mind wandered to Wammys house. To memories of L and I running through the halls as children, sneaking into the kitchens for sweets. Going to the bakery or candy shop. Walking through the town on our dates.

"I can't wait. You know what we should do when we get back?"

"You mean besides talking to the boys?"

"Yes. We should go out on a date. It'll be a great way to unwind after this case." I replied, and L smiled at me.

"I like the idea of a date. A real one. Not that awkward one that Misa had with Light in her suite."

I cringed at that. I was watching that 'date' from the monitor room. I was standing beside Matsuda.

I would have preferred to be next to L, but we weren't about to reveal our relationship to the two Kiras. I felt bad for my boyfriend.

Despite being an awkward man around people he wasn't close to, he never liked such situations. Made him uncomfortable.

That was one of the reasons why he made Light attack him. It was to break that awkward tension.

By the time we had finished eating, the others began to arrive. None of them looked like they had gotten any sleep. Mr. Yagami was, understandably, the worst of the group.

He looked downright miserable, and it made me hate Light even more.

What kind of despicable human being do you have to be to do such horrible acts, and not even care how it'll affect the ones closest to you?

It just proved to me that Light had no capacity for love. He treated his family like they didn't exist, he treated women like toys. To be played with, but discarded once he was bored with them.

I saw L watching Mr. Yagami throughout the day and knew he was thinking the same thing I did.

At the end of the day, L did exactly what I had expected him to do. He gave the men the rest of the week off to come to terms what the ending of the case.

We talked about it after everyone had left. I told him that was just his kindness showing. Just like when he provided for the men in case they lost their jobs while working on the case.

Before too long, the case was completely over. Misa was doing rather well in the correctional facility. Light was locked behind bar for the rest of his life without the chance of parole.

"It's ironic, isn't it? That Light is to be locked up with the same people he wanted to kill?" I chuckled. L snickered too, a small grin on his face.

We were finally back in England, and on our way home to Wammys.

We chatted about unimportant topics as we drove through the British countryside.

We both grinned as we stopped the car in front of the orphanage and opened the car doors.

We had barely taken a few steps away from the car when the front doors burst open and three missiles slammed into us.

"YOU'RE HOME!!!" The excited boys screamed as they hugged the life out of us.

We gave each other one more grin before squeezing the boys in a hug.

It was good to be home.
