Mermaid soulmate au

I missed my oceanic home. A home I had to leave because I am searching for my soulmate.

All mermaids have soulmates, and when a merchild is old enough to survive on land, we leave our underwater home to find them, since it is rare for us to find them in the city we were born in. We have to venture into the human world, a world that doesn't know we exist.

I have been searching for him since I was eight years old, and I feared that I might not find him.

I decided to become a detective, in order to find him.

It was this choice in human career that lead me to Japan for the Kira Case.

It has been a long case, but we've finally gotten a hold of a Death Note, a magical notebook with the power to kill humans.

It can't be used to kill magical creatures. We have our own magic that protects us from Shinigami.

It was early evening, and I was standing on the roof of L's taskforce building, which overlooked the ocean.

I held my (favorite color) mermaid crystal, the source of my magic while in my human form.

My thoughts were swirling in my head, and I was finally able to get a break where I could focus on my magic that has been calling out for the past few months.

My magic was whispering to me, in equal parts loss and longing for my aquatic home, the other part sounded joyous, complete.

Those few years where I lived in the water, my parents told me that my magic would sing to me like this when I find my soulmate.

I thought about the past few months, going over all the guys I have seen since my magic started acting up.

I had the feeling I knew who it is, the man I hope it is.

Is he even a merman?

I decide to ask him tonight, after everyone else has gone to bed or left.

It wasn't long after I had come back in to find the last of the stragglers to leave the monitor room, leaving just the dark-haired detective and me.

"Hey, Ryuzaki. I have a question." I asked him. He lifted his head and turned slightly to indicate that he was listening. I pulled my mermaid crystal out from beneath my shirt.

"Do you ever miss the ocean?" He stiffened at the question, turning his chair, abruptly to look at me, playing with my crystal as I waited for his answer.

Instead, he stood up and pulled his own navy blue crystal out from beneath his shirt.

"Yeah, I miss the water. Being human is so weird, it doesn't feel right. Why do you ask?"

"I feel the same way, and I asked because I think we're soulmates."

"Well, there is only one way to find out. Come on." He smiled at me as he led me out of the monitor room and down to the far and of the hallway. I was curious about where the genius was taking me, because no one ever goes here. I was even more curious when we stopped at a dead end, until he opened up the wall which hid an elevator. He stepped inside and I followed. He pressed the only button on the wall, and we were going down.

It was over in a couple of minutes when the door opened to a room with beach towels. There was a glass wall which led to a large swimming pool.

Ryuzaki explained that he had the pool added in, so he could take a break from being human without anyone seeing him in his true form.

I grinned. This is the first time I've been able to let go since I became a detective.

L took my hand and we both jumped into the deep end, and stayed underwater as our magic changed us.

I laughed in excitement as my (favorite color) tail, and my matching shells appeared. I turned to see L with his navy blue tail.

We swam to each other, taking both hands and we watched as our magic mingled together just as it would when our soulmates are found.

I could tell that we both knew what this meant.

When the case is over, we will return to the sea where we belong.

(Bonus)

It was only a week after our trip in the pool.

After playing with each other for a little while, we got out of the pool and allowed ourselves to return to our human forms.

We came up with a plan which led to everyone thinking we were dead, and Light and Misa were arrested.

L pretended to fall from a heart attack and used his mermaid magic to make it look like he died.

I was supposedly shot, after Light tried to shoot me while he was being handcuffed. The bullet actually hit the Death Note we got from Higuchi. I was holding it to my chest, which was also covered by a bulletproof vest that was hidden beneath my sweatshirt.

We realized that no one would die if something happened to the Death note, so L had ordered Watari to have it, and the other notebook Aizawa found in the woods, burned.

Now everyone was gone, and L and I were able to release our magic and wake up.

It took a few minutes for us to get up, then we took some time to prepare for our new lives.

We waited until it was nice and dark, and we both wore dark clothes to help us hide as we made our way to the beach.

We stood in the shadows of a building on the edge of the beach until the moon was hidden behind clouds, then we ran for the waves.

We jumped in and allowed our magic to transform us for the last time. We dove deeper and deeper until we had gotten past the shallow water.

Hand in hand we swam to our future.
