A Special Day in October

Today was a beautiful day for a birthday party.

My best friend, the love of my life, my husband's birthday that is.

I had been worried I wouldn't be able to celebrate this day ever again.

The Kira case had ended nearly a year ago. This time last year left me terrified.

We had caught the Yostuba Kira, and Light had remembered everything he did as the original Kira. He was holding the Death Note when he killed Higuchi. That made him the new owner of that Death Note.

After reading the rules of the Death Note L had been forced to let the two killers go. I was the only one besides L, to know that Light and Misa were the killers.

I was lucky enough to have hidden away a few wiretaps in the entrance to the headquarters. L had no clue they were there.

I was glad that I could hear Light's instructions to Misa clearly. He told her to wait a few days to get the notebook he had buried.

I got to it the next day, while running some errands for L. Since I got to it first I became the owner of the hidden notebook. I went to the police station to talk to Aizawa, who detained Misa once again, and sent her to a psychologist that works with the police.

I had to tell L not to be hasty as he often was when he wanted to finish a tough case quickly.

My ownership of the Death Note gained the attention of the Shinigami, and I told her I had Misa working with a psychologist. I planned to have her separated from Light, explaining the letter that was with the notebook.

Rem told me that she had been tricked by Light to kill L and me if Misa was in danger of being killed. All the Shinigami wanted was for Misa to be safe from Light. Now that she is free from him, Rem had no desire to kill us.

At least I didn't have to worry about the Shinigami. However, I had no idea how Light will react when he finds out he lost control of Misa and Rem.

November 5th was a dreary day, and L was pretty depressed. I found him standing out in the rain, complaining about the bells.

I brought him inside and got him dried up. After that I told him that we could now solve the case. I had him listen to the tape of Light's conversation to Misa and showed him the notebook I retrieved. I told him a psychologist was working on Misa.

We took the evidence to the task force, and in the end Aizawa arrested Light.

The trials ended with Light getting life in prison without the possibility of parole, and Misa got four years in a prison and weekly visits by the psychologist.

I was snapped out of my thoughts as the timer went off and I walked over to the fridge to put the finishing touches on the four tier strawberry shortcake I made for my husbands birthday.

I looked up at the clock. It was 11am now, and the boys were set to arrive in half an hour to help me set up our house for L's party. Which was set to start at 1pm. Thankfully L was down the road at Wammy's, preparing a series of mock cases for the detective classes to work on. Watari was keeping him there until he got the signal.

L thought that we were just going to be getting ready for Wammy's trick or treat tonight, but that wasn't set to start until five. We would have a few hours for the birthday party before we would clean up and get ready for trick or treat.

After that, I had a special surprise for my husband.

By the time we got the living room ready, it was time to bring L home. I called Watari, and he drove L down the road to our home.

L had been so surprised by the party. The boys and I really went all out. I told my husband that it was because we couldn't celebrate last year.

L had a big grin as he enjoyed the party. He got a new laptop from Mello, and a weighted blanket from Near. The teen got the idea from a few times he found L asleep in his office at Wammys. Mostly from overworking on cases and making mock cases.

He also got a gaming console from Matt, so he could "practice playing Call of Duty four so I don't feel so bad about kicking your butt!" As Matt put it. That got a laugh out of my husband.

I had gifted him with a few new pairs of sleeping pants.

After the party ended and after we cleaned up I thanked the boys and sent them on their way back to Wammys to get ready for trick-or-treat.

L and I chose to dress up as vampire royalty. It was pretty easy for L to get ready, because he didn't need much makeup.

"All you really need is a bit of red lipstick, fake blood, and black eye shadow. You are already pale as a vampire, and your eyebags help make up look over-tired. Add in the messy hair; you have the 'just crawled out of the coffin' look. It's perfect." I told him as I got ready. L put on the fake fangs and dressed up in a black suit and a cape. I put on a gorgeous black dress that was perfect for a vampire queen.

Trick or treat lasted about an hour and a half as the kids went to all the older Wammy residents that lived on the street closet to the orphanage. This was the street most of the teachers and other caregivers chose to live if they didn't remain in the orphanage itself.

After trick-or-treat was over and we got changed for the night I turned to my husband.

"I have one more present for you darling. It's in the bottom drawer of my dresser. Go check it out." I told him.

L tilted his head at me curiously. He was obviously wondering why I didn't just give it to him during his party. I simply gave him a smile and followed him up the stairs.

I had cleaned out the bottom drawer in my dresser and put in some basic baby things in it. I had books about pregnancy, notebooks to keep track of feedings and tummy time. I had a scrapbook for pictures I take when marking milestones during my pregnancy, ultrasound pictures and the baby's first year. I also had a bottle and pacifier set in the drawer.

I stood in the doorway as he crouched down in front of my dresser. He turned to glance at me for a moment, and I simply tilted my head at the drawer.

He opened it, and just stared for a few minutes, taking everything in. I watched as his mind caught up to what he was seeing and L turned with wide, tear filled eyes. The shocked look on his face changed to pure joy as my hands moved to lightly cup my stomach.

"Sweetheart? Are you really?" He asked. I grinned at him.

"Happy birthday daddy." I stated as he pulled me into his arms.

"This is the best birthday present ever. Thank you, so much my love."
