I watched her from across the room. The one person here I actually got along with.
Really, one of the few people I've ever met that I get along with.
Her (color) hair was pulled back in a low ponytail, to keep it out of her face as she worked. Her navy blue top was riding up her back slightly, revealing just a sliver of pale skin.
Jasmine was sitting on the floor typing up old reports for me. I wanted her to make digital copies of everything we had discovered so far. We were going to send the reports to Near and Mello in hopes that they can either help us solve the case, or be prepared in case something happens to us.
My mind went back to the day we met.
We were eight years old, and she was first brought to the orphanage after being taken from her abusive parents.
I had been sitting at the base of a tree, watching the other kids play.
Nobody ever wanted to play with me. Not since I attacked everyone in self-defense when I first got here. That was two months before she got there.
I had since learned that the kids were just excited to meet me, but I took the crowding as an attack because of how my parents were.
There were a lot of kids at the time, and they were trying to figure out where to put her. The only empty rooms at the time were the ones by my bedroom.
They felt it better not to put any of the kids up there in case I got aggressive again, though I haven't since that day.
She got out of the car and Watari, or Mr. Wammy at the time, told her to go mingle with the kids until he came for her.
She took one look around and seemed to have noticed me all alone.
She walked right over to me, which got me curious. Even then I felt that she was really pretty. She sat a couple of feet away from me.
We studied each other. She had long (color) hair and bright (color) eyes. She was wearing a navy blue coat that was a little too big for her, and scuffed up jeans.
"Hello." She said.
"Hello." I said back.
"You can call me Jasmine. It's my orphanage name. Mr. Wammy told me to never tell anyone my real name."
"I am L."
"Pleased to meet you L!" She smiled. I decided right there that I liked her smile.
"Pleased to me you too Jasmine." I smiled back.
When Watari came out to get Jasmine, he had been pleasantly surprised to see that we were getting along. I followed her to the office, and it was decided that she would get the room next to mine.
That was the day we became friends, and since then my feelings for her grew.
She went into the detective program along with me, but she preferred studying criminals and profiling them over actually solving cases.
It has worked well to help me in nearly all of my cases. She was even able to help me understand Beyond when he snapped.
"Some people can't handle the pressure of the detective program. Though B always had A to keep him level. It was A's death that pushed him over the edge." She had explained. She continued to explain that A and B worked well as partners, much like us. A was able to keep B from going too crazy with the work load and his own memories. While B helped A with his self-esteem and confidence.
"I don't know what happened to make A do what he did, but whatever it was, B snapped as a result."
Now she is helping me try to catch Kira, and she is proving the balancing act that she mentioned before.
Jasmine kept me from overworking myself and getting too stressed. I kept her focused, so she wouldn't start ranting at the rest of the task force. Something that she did if she felt we were being hindered by something.
I focused back on the present when I noticed her standing up. She picked up the pile of papers and took them over to the filing tub that we were keeping them in until the new building was finished.
There wasn't much going on at the moment. It was one of those rare days where nobody was here but Jasmine and me. Most of the men were at a police meeting. Ukita and Mogi being the only two not at the meeting as they were tending the phone lines today.
"I went through everything we had before the entrance exams. Even the tapes from the Yagami house. I noticed something odd about the night Light took the bag of chips to his room. I wanted to show it to you."
I walked over to her laptop and crouched down beside her. I remember watching the tapes, but not seeing anything, so I was curious about what she saw.
"Focus inside the bag." She told me, and I focused on the bag and gasped when I saw the small bit of light coming from inside the bag.
"Clever, nobody would have thought to look for something like that. What made you notice it?"
"We knew Light was Kira, and he fit the profile perfectly, so I knew there had to be something we missed that night. The first thing I thought of was the bag of chips. I'm not saying he is a health nut or anything, but have you ever seen him eating a bag of chips besides the bag he took that night? Normally I see him with healthier snacks like apples. So, I focused on that."
"That's true, even when we went to the cafe, he didn't order anything but coffee."
"If it had been something even a little more obvious you would have noticed it, even if nobody else would have. Like the envelope Raye Penber had with him at the station. You had to point it out to the rest of us. Nobody would have even thought about focusing on the bag. I'll admit, though, I had to go frame by frame to actually realize what I was seeing."
"Which was?"
"A mini tv. Only questions now are why he put it into the bag of chips and how. It had to have been before we put the cameras and wiretaps, or else we would've caught it."
"Good work Jasmine, as always." She smiled as she left the room, to get the rest of the reports.
My mind went back to the thoughts I was having. I had thought she was pretty before, and she has only grown more beautiful as time passed.
I have loved Jasmine for such a long time, forever really. I just didn't know how to tell her.
What would she say? What would she do? Would she smile and blush? Giggle? Would she accept my feelings? Or would she prefer being friends?
These questions raced through my mind as I thought about all the memories we had made in the last several years.
Trips to the sweet shop in town. Trips to the park. Days of working together on cases or class projects. The conversations we had sitting under the tree.
So many happy memories that made my heart race.
I watched as Jasmine returned and continued typing up reports and emailing them to the boys.
I smiled softly as the light from her laptop made her features seem to glow.
I gave a silent sigh and turned away to focus on my own laptop. For now my feelings will remain unspoken.
