The morning was in full swing as Dominic and Valeria were getting started on their new duties at the Petting Zoo expansion of the New Zoo.

Currently, Valeria was eying the chicken coop for a brief moment. The red paint seemed freshly painted as if a new coat had been applied before their return. It looked rather homely...which caused Valeria to recall the significance of the work she was doing.

"I wonder what they were like before...well this?" thought Valeria, curious for a brief moment. However, the wicker basket under her arm caused her mind to return to the task she had been assigned. A small clipboard was within, a pen attached for Valeria to fill out as management requested.

"Might as well go get the eggs for Elizabeth as per our...arrangement" mumbled Valeria, walking towards the front door of the coop. She pulled the small lock that kept the door closed as she pulled the door back.

The door came down, creating a ramp between the coop and the ground as the flock of birds began to vacate. The chickens departed first, Britney with Ciara and Sophie were soon followed by their parents. The geese were not too far behind, Amy straggling behind her parents as Valeria stood back.

Soon, the birds had begun to curiously look around the ground as Valeria threw down some bird feed to ensure they remained distracted.

Now, the real task awaited.

Valeria entered the chicken coop, having to duck down as she did so. She crawled on her knees towards the first nest. She noticed the above fact sheet which indicated she was at the first chicken nest as she smiled slightly. She also noticed that there was now an engraving containing the name of the former humans now animals.

"I guess that the magic has assigned them to different nests for convenience," said Valeria, shaking her head. She recalled her task as she figured she might as well begin. She was able to get up enough to look inside the nest, eying the eggs within. She reached down, carefully gripping one of the eggs as she placed it gently in the wicker basket.

"One down...how many more to go" thought Valeria as she developed a small rhythm. Her mind began to wander at the simplicity of her task, thinking back to how she got into this situation.

How her daughter got them into this situation.

"No, I can't blame her...at least not for what I fear is going to happen" thought Valeria, thinking back to a specific part of their deal.

The Managers had requested assistance to help the Zoo look more legitimate in between continuing to expand their collection. Valeria and Dominic, with their business acumen, had been asked as to how this could be accomplished.

"I still don't know why our first thought went to children," thought Valeria, doubt crossing her mind. Nevertheless, she continued to gather the eggs, having moved onto another nest.

The pair had suggested allowing children to come and learn about the various animals. As a sort of learning experience. Annoyingly but not unexpectedly, the Managers had quickly twisted the idea.

It seemed as if they couldn't look beyond expanding their exhibits.

"You'd think after everything...they'd be a bit more pragmatic" mumbled Valeria, making a few final notes on her clipboard. "Looks like Freya's outperformed Greta...again" continued Valeria, noting the number of eggs the pair had laid. "I'd be curious to know why" finished Valeria, content with her work as she heard a distant bleating.

"It sounds like my husband's tending to the sheep," thought Valeria, unable to resist a chuckle despite their predicament. The bleats were getting more vocal, impatient as Valeria decided it would be best to check up on her husband.

Valeria vacated the chicken coop, the wicker basket under her arm as she looked around the Petting Zoo. She noticed the Sheep Pasture not too far off as she began to walk to it. Her mind began to wander once more, curious as to how she got to this point.

"I wonder what my past self would think if she could see me now" mumbled Valeria, chuckling bitterly as she said it. However, this brought her attention back to why she was here.

It brought her attention back to her daughter.

"I still can't believe she applied here to get freedom," thought Valeria, doubt clouding her mind as she recalled what the Spirit had told her. The same Spirit that had befriended her daughter. While their closeness did make her uncomfortable, Valeria had to admit that it seemed to be having a good influence on Marie.

"I...I didn't know she felt so...isolated" said Valeria, feeling regretful. "I thought she just liked to keep to herself" continued Valeria, at a loss of just how much of her daughter's behaviour might have been an act.

Just how much did Valeria know her daughter?

MOO!

Valeria's thoughts were interrupted by the distant lowing. She shook her head as she realised it could only belong to her daughter. She turned towards the red barn in the distance, recognising it as the origin of her daughter's lowing.

"I guess I should let them out into the pasture," said Valeria, a small smile adorning her face. "But first...I'll check up on my husband with the sheep" finished Valeria. She walked with the eggs in tow as she headed towards the Sheep Pasture.

After all, the increasingly agitated bleating coming from the sheep was beginning to concern her.

At the Sheep Pasture:

Dominic was currently sitting down on a stool as he sheared a sheep. Clara appeared somewhat nervous as she was having difficulty keeping still. Her newly sheared body was now feeling much more comfortable as she hoped her 'mother' would soon feel the same benefit.

"Funny little one" mumbled Dominic, finding himself rather amused by the small lamb. However, his attention was currently focused on Klaire who seemed rather nonchalant about the process. "I imagine that means I'm doing it right," thought Dominic, continuing to shear Klaire's wool. He had no idea what the Managers would do with it.

"It's not my concern," thought Dominic, being momentarily distracted as a distant lowing could be heard. "Guess my daughter wants to be let out" continued Dominic, staring down at the half-sheared Klaire.

"Still...I should really finish this, besides...my wife could benefit from seeing her more than I could" mumbled Dominic. He returned his attention to Klaire, noticing she was now staring directly at him.

As Dominic stared into Klaire's eyes his mind began to wander. "I wonder who these people were...were they another family wrecked by the Managers?" wandered Dominic, pushing the thought from his mind. A few tears came to his eyes which he pushed back. After all, he had to be strong for his wife even if he was also struggling to cope.

Just how could they do this? Ruin so many lives for something so ultimately petty?

Dominic returned his attention to Klaire, continuing to shear the calm sheep. Soon enough, he had finished shearing the final patch of wool as he tapped Klaire's side.

"Ok, you're done now...who's next?" said Dominic out loud, noticing Klaire moving towards her 'daughter.' Almost immediately, Clara began to suckle from her 'mother's' teat. Dominic shook his head, taking a moment to watch the scene. It was so tranquil...almost peaceful.

"I wonder how they feel...at least they're still together," thought Dominic, his thoughts returning to his daughter. He struggled not to feel jealous as he continued to eye the pair.

"Dominic? Are you alright?" asked Valeria, snapping her husband out of his trance. He turned to face his wife, noticing the wicker basket under her arm.

"I guess you've finished with the chickens?" asked Dominic, his expression curious.

"Yes, Freya outperformed Greta again" replied Valeria. As the pair stared at each other for a moment, they heard the distant lowing of their daughter once more.

"I guess you should go and check up on Marie," said Dominic, noticing another sheep approaching him. A quick bleating returned his attention to Angelica, who seemed to be uncomfortable with the wool surrounding her body.

"Fair enough but...we need to speak later. Keeping your feelings to yourself won't do your health any good" replied Valeria, an expression of concern on her face. She began to walk away, heading towards the Barn as Dominic was once again left alone.

Dominic swivelled around on the stool, motioning for Angelica to come forward. She complied, seemingly eager to have her wool sheared as Dominic began his task.

As Dominic sheared away patch after patch of wool his mind began to wander once more. "The rabbit seems rather unsettled," thought Dominic, considering various possibilities. It had been particularly stubborn at being picked up as if there was something...human about it.

"Perhaps she still has her memories like Marie," thought Dominic, continuing to shear Angelica. Angelica appeared to be bleating softly, the shearing causing her relief. "Makes you think as to whether they all remember...or not?" continued Dominic, paying no attention to Angelica's bleating as he continued to shear.

Clara eyed her 'sister' as she couldn't help but feel frustrated. This was the first time in a while since she and her 'sister' had been together in the same pasture! Ever since that goat had been added, she had been seeing her 'sister' less and less. Even her 'father' had been kept separate from her as Clara couldn't help but stomp the ground in frustration. She let out a stubborn bleat, agitated at her current situation.

However, her tantrum was quickly and swiftly interrupted by the bleating of her 'mother.' Clara looked behind her, eyeing her 'mother' who bleated at her. Clara reluctantly complied, walking towards her 'mother.'

Clara only desired a companion her own age. Something which was increasingly sounding to be too much to ask.

Dominic finished Angelica who seemed to bleat with approval. He tapped her side, sending her away as he motioned for George to come forward. The ram walked forward, awaiting for Dominic to begin as his mind wandered back to his wife.

"Yes, seeing Marie should do her some good" thought Dominic as he began to promptly shear George.

After all, the pair still had a lot to do.

At the Barn:

Valeria approached the red barn as she was thankful that it had already been unlocked. She imagined that Dominic must have already been in to collect the shears earlier on.

"Makes me wonder why he didn't let them out then though," thought Valeria, deciding not to think further on the matter. She opened the large door, walking inside as she took care not to ruin the eggs she was holding within the wicker basket.

"Hello everyone" called out Valeria, hearing a chorus of mooing, braying and neighing as she did so. She noticed a nearby table within the barn as she placed the wicker basket down upon it. She then looked towards the residents within the barn, focusing on her daughter.

"About time you showed up!" lowed Marie, frustration in her tone.

"Daughter...please watch your tone" replied Valeria softly. She noticed her daughter seemed shocked for a moment. She imagined Marie had only just remembered that they could understand each other.

"Remember I can understand you daughter" informed Valeria, attempting to hide the sympathetic glance she was giving her daughter. "To think how dependent she's now on others...it's, it's insulting that they sold this to her as freedom," thought Valeria. She shook her head, deciding to dismiss her thoughts for the moment.

Valeria then headed towards Stuart's stall. She unlocked it as she swung open the door. "Stuart, please head outside into the pasture," said Valeria, her tone sounding authoritative. After all, from what she'd seen while she couldn't understand Stuart, he could definitely understand her.

Stuart nodded, complying as he began to depart from his stall towards the pasture connected to the barn. His tail swished slightly as he did so, Valeria moving onto Vannessa's stall.

"Let's hope she's not going to be stubborn again" groaned Valeria internally. She opened the stall, trying to guide the donkey out.

Unfortunately, Vannessa decided to be stubborn...again.
"Stubborn again?" thought Valeria, shaking her head. "Fortunately, this time I'm prepared this time" continued Valeria as she looked around. She noticed a bag as she walked over to it. Valeria had soon pulled out a carrot as she walked back towards Vannessa's stall.

The smell seemed to catch the donkey's attention as it mindlessly began to walk in the direction of the carrot. It departed from its stall, continuing to follow Valeria holding the carrot outside.

"Good, good Vannessa'' complimented Valeria, stroking the donkey's mane as she fed the carrot to Vannessa. Vannessa seemed to bray softly in approval as she fed on the carrot.

Valeria, noticing Vannessa seemed to be content, began to walk back into the barn.

It was now time to have some mother-daughter time.

Valeria noticed the expression her daughter was giving her. It seemed rather...apologetic.

"Sorry for earlier mother" whimpered Marie, noticing her mother didn't seem to pay it much mind.

"It's ok daughter, I can only imagine your irritation" replied Valeria, noticing her daughter's expression remained unchanged. "Marie, are you alright?" asked Valeria, a look of concern on her face.

"I...I'm full" mumbled Marie awkwardly. Valeria had to do a double-take, realising what her daughter was referring to. She quickly looked around, noticing a bucket and stool that she could use. Valeria shook her head as she opened Marie's stall.

It was time to milk her daughter. An idea that Valeria was unsure of how to feel about.

"Ok, please walk forward," said Valeria nicely, smiling slightly as her daughter complied. It appeared that aspects of her daughter's personality were not faked.

Once Marie's udder was next to Valeria, she grabbed a teat as she pulled it experimentally. A squirt of milk came from it as it landed inside the bucket.

"Moo!" lowed Marie, clearly finding pleasure in the activity. She then looked sheepishly at her mother. "Sorry," said Marie, her tone feeling rather awkward.

"It's fine daughter, it's...only natural" replied Valeria, her tone sounding rather defeated. With that comment, Valeria continued to milk her daughter, eventually developing into a rhythm.

As strange as it was, Valeria couldn't help but find the activity oddly...pleasant. She figured it was due to finally being able to spend some time with her daughter.

As Valeria continued to milk her daughter, she failed to notice the Spirit observing her from a distance. It shifted its voluminous turquoise hair as it continued to eye Valeria.

"Marie seems happier now that her parents work here," thought the Spirit, smiling as it eyed its other best friend. However, it was also sensing something else, something that confused the Spirit greatly.

After all, it was still trying to understand the concept of emotions.

"However, they also feel...uneasy. It's as if they're uncomfortable" thought the Spirit, confusion filling its essence. "I thought both mother, father and daughter would be happy to be reunited" continued the Spirit. It scratched its chin inquisitively, unable to find an answer that made sense.

"Perhaps I should inquire this with Elizabeth," thought the Spirit, feeling a sensation through its being. It quickly concluded that Elizabeth would be here soon through their shared bond. The thought of its other best friend caused its mind to wander. The Spirit couldn't help but recall...

"Not right now," thought the Spirit, forcing the invasive thought out of its mind. However, it couldn't help but continue to feel uneasy. Whatever it had encountered that day had clearly not given up if the number of grey spots in the sky at night was any indication.

"At least I've been able to keep it out," thought the Spirit. However, at this rate, it feared it wouldn't be able to do so for very much longer. It felt a sense of concern for itself, for its friends, for the Zoo.

However, as the Spirit stared at Marie, it felt a sense of resolve building within. After all, it was friends like Marie which was why it was doing this.

And it was friends like Elizabeth which was why it would continue to do so.

Speaking of which, the Spirit sensed that Elizabeth had just arrived. It took one last look at Marie, deciding to leave her friend to her privacy as it faded away.

After all, Elizabeth would be wondering what the Spirit had been up to since their last meeting.

At the Stone Archways:

Elizabeth wandered under the familiar stone archways as she entered the Main Hallway of the New Zoo. She had a look of unease on her face, concerned at how events had played out over the past week.

"I can only hope Rebecca knows what she's doing," thought Elizabeth, feeling sick to her stomach since, as of now, the New Zoo was aligned with the Society.

However, a small smile crossed her face as she noticed a familiar turquoise form approaching her. "At least some things never change" thought Elizabeth, feeling momentarily happy as the Spirit eyed her.

"So...how have you been?" asked Elizabeth, beginning to walk slowly down the Main Hallway. After all, Rebecca had asked her to pick up something at the Office before the new volunteers who would be arriving later on.

"I've been fine" started the Spirit, having to force the words out slightly. Thankfully, Elizabeth didn't seem to notice...or at least she didn't comment on it. "We've had a few new additions which meant a few new meals for me but nothing particularly remarkable" continued the Spirit, trying to force away its unease.

Unfortunately for the Spirit, Elizabeth could sense its unease. However, in conjunction with her own, she decided that she didn't desire to talk about it right now.

After all, what was one day's difference going to do?

"Are Dominic and Valeria in yet?" asked Elizabeth, curious as to how the pair were getting along.

"Yes, they are," replied the Spirit, letting the words hang for a moment. It seemed eager to get its burden off its chest but...it held back, not wishing to share just yet. "They've been complying with the tasks Charlotte laid out for them...and Valeria had collected the eggs as you asked" continued the Spirit.

"Perfect" replied Elizabeth, her smile widening. "Those eggs will be great for my cooking" continued Elizabeth, shaking her head to get back on track. "So how are the new additions settling in?" asked Elizabeth.

"There's nothing major to report. The new lionesses seem to have settled into their new routines whereas the Arctic Foxes still appear to think that they'll be human again tomorrow" informed the Spirit, resisting the urge to laugh at the naivety the family had shown.

Except for Quinn, who had still seemed uneasy throughout the rest of the day and last night.

"So Quinn's still uneasy?" asked Elizabeth, catching the Spirit off guard. "Shared mind link, remember?" stated Elizabeth, tapping her head jokily.

"Yes, I'd be surprised if she hasn't already caught on. After all, she was rather observant yesterday" replied the Spirit.

"It doesn't matter anymore," said Elizabeth, her mind drifting to the previous night. She recalled Rebecca's idea as she showed Elizabeth Quinn's artbook. Elizabeth had only paid faint attention, the cartoon on the television warranting much more of her attention.

Nevertheless, Rebecca's idea had merit...but Elizabeth would leave it with Rebecca to execute.

"If Quinn only knew what Rebecca's planned for her," thought Elizabeth, chuckling quietly. The Spirit eyed Elizabeth confusingly for a moment before feeling the same thought. It couldn't help but chuckle as well, keeping calm so as to not blow the con early.

"So...who's due for the Zoo today?" asked the Spirit, trying to change the subject.

"Hopefully the first of many child volunteers brought to us by Dominic and Valeria" replied Elizabeth, a sadistic smile on her face. She couldn't help but find the situation incredibly amusing.

"I wonder if Valeria knew we'd be doing this?" wondered the Spirit.

"Of course, she would...she doesn't appear to be dim" replied Elizabeth, looking around as she wondered what exhibit they should add to today.

"I feel we should add to the Aviary today...make it more diverse," said the Spirit. It recalled Megan for a faint moment, several thoughts crossing its mind. It could only hope that Megan was now ok.

"I agree, especially since, according to the bios of the children, they're both fond of birds" replied Elizabeth. She approached the doors to the Office, curious as to what item Rebecca asked her to retrieve.

After all, it had been a while since they'd opened the small safe within.

"I wonder...why were you picked for today?" asked the Spirit, curiosity on its face.

"I don't know...my smaller size perhaps?" replied Elizabeth, trying to ignore the building emotion within her. A few distant memories were trying to force their way to the surface against her will as she forced them back down.

"Now let's go find this item," said Elizabeth, opening the doors to the Office as she walked inside. The Spirit promptly followed her, deciding to assist before the new arrival was due to arrive.

That Afternoon:

The sun was high in the sky, shining down upon the New Zoo as a pair of twins, a boy and a girl stared up curiously. Their blue eyes stared curiously at the stone archways as their eyes were full of wonder.

"You know mother's only dropped us here so she doesn't have to put up with us for a few hours...right?" said Edward, staring at his sister who was still glancing at the sign curiously.

"Of course" replied Aisha, her blond pigtails shifting slightly. "I didn't know she was that annoyed by our pranks" continued Aisha, an uneasy expression on her face. "Do you...do you think we might've gone too far?" asked Aisha, staring at her brother.

"Of course not," replied Edward defiantly. He shook his head in denial because he, like his sister, never intended their pranks to be hurtful. "I guess we should go inside?" asked Edward.

"Suppose so, beats standing out here" replied Aisha, shrugging her shoulders as she walked inside. Edward wasn't too far behind as they soon entered the Main Hallway. He had come in a scruffy green coat with blue shorts. His black trainers on his feet appeared well-used.

"I...I hope our clothing is ok" thought Aisha, her blue jacket shifting. She had worn a pink t-shirt and a white skirt. Small dainty white trainers adorned her feet as she looked around, trying to find her brother. "Edward...where'd you go?" asked Aisha, her expression concerned for a brief moment.

"Don't worry sis, I'm right here" replied Edward, promptly returning clutching what appeared to be a map in his hand. "Just figured we could have a look around before..." started Edward, barely having time to react as his sister's arms swung around him. She clutched him tight in a strong hug as Edward couldn't help but return it.

After all, they hadn't been nicknamed the 'Cuddle-Bugs' in school for nothing.

"Just...just don't disappear on me...ok?" said Aisha, her voice small.

"Sorry sister...I won't" replied Edward, his voice soft as he hugged his sister back. Aisha had taken their father leaving worse than he had but he still found comfort in the affection of his sister. "Now, how about we go look around?" offered Edward, waving the map in his hand.

"Yes, let's do so" replied Aisha, her excitement returning as the pair separated. They looked around, their eyes wide in childish wonder as they did so.

Unknown to the twins, they were being watched. The Spirit eyed the pair intently, struggling to fight back the feeling inside. "I must be getting soft" thought the Spirit, feeling a sense of familiarity as it continued to watch the twins. It was almost like...that night. The Spirit shuddered as it could sense their memories...their happy memories.

"Hopefully, they'll embrace the opportunity," thought the Spirit, fading away as it did so. After all, Elizabeth would now know where they were...and it was time to begin.

Elizabeth was walking down the Main Hallway, a small smile on her face as she noticed the children seemed to be looking around curiously.

"I suppose I should introduce myself," thought Elizabeth as she continued to walk in the direction of the children. "Hello you two!" shouted Elizabeth, waving her hand as she noticed that the twins saw her. She continued to walk forward, her smile warm as it seemed to put the children...and herself at ease.

"Welcome to the New Zoo" started Elizabeth, holding her hand out for a shake. "My name is Elizabeth and I'll be your guide today" continued Elizabeth as Edward and Aisha shook her hand.

"My name's Edward and this is my sister Aisha" replied Edward, a wide smile on his face. Aisha gave a small bow in greeting as Elizabeth smiled. They truly seemed at ease with her.

"They're...they seem like quite good kids," thought Elizabeth, her mind wandering as she swore she recalled them from somewhere. However, she shook her head, stopping that train of thought before it could begin.

"Are you ok?" asked Aisha, her blue eyes wide with concern as she eyed Elizabeth.

This was enough to snap Elizabeth out of her trance as she stared at the children. They were both eying her with concern. "Yes, apologies for spacing out there" replied Elizabeth, hurrying out the words. "Now...what are your favourite animals?" asked Elizabeth, her tone sweet as she tried to distract her mind.

Edward and Aisha looked at each other. They still felt concerned for Elizabeth. However, they both mentally decided it was best to change the subject rather than dwell on it.

"We enjoy birds, their various features are rather fascinating," said Aisha, her tone adorable as her eyes widened with intrigue.

"Not to mention the many different bird species, each one rather different than the last" continued Edward, his face like his sister's appeared particularly intrigued.

Elizabeth appeared to think for a moment. After all, she had already known the answer but decided to say it anyway. "Well you're in luck, we have a developing Aviary if you wish to help me" offered Elizabeth, noticing the enthusiasm shared between the twins.

"We'd love to," said the pair together, unable to resist the urge to head forward as they clutched Elizabeth tight. Elizabeth was taken off guard as she was suddenly tackled by the pair, caught tightly between their cuddles.

Yet something about it felt...nice.

"Ok children, please...let me...go" stuttered Elizabeth in between breaths. Fortunately, the children relented at that, seeming oddly despondent.

"Sorry about that," said Edward, looking at the floor.

"We didn't mean to..." started Aisha.

"It's ok children, I don't mind you being affectionate" replied Elizabeth, smiling as this seemed to pep the children back up. Despite what she was about to do, Elizabeth couldn't help but feel warm inside. "Ok, children now follow me," said Elizabeth, walking away as she motioned for the children to follow her.

Edward and Aisha eagerly complied. They were both curious about the Aviary as they continued to follow Elizabeth. The Spirit was not too far behind, still feeling uneasy about the situation but finding the resolve to carry on.

After all, they had already come this far...it was only right to see it through.

Within the Aviary:

Megan was minding her own business. She was sitting in her nest, on her eggs as she noticed Chris was on patrol as per their partnership. Megan felt concern coming over her which she tried to deny. She shook her head, deciding to focus her attention on Chris.

The same peacock who seemed to be walking away from the nest.

"Chris? Where are you going?!" squawked Megan, feeling irritated as Chris seemed to be walking towards the glass panels that made up the walls of the Aviary. His attention appeared to be elsewhere as Megan shook her head.

"I should join him but...what about my eggs?" thought Megan, struggling to reconcile her human mind against her animal instincts.

Meanwhile, Chris had managed to find the origin of the noise. It appeared that one of the Managers had decided to make some new additions to the Aviary. The sight of the pair of children caused Chris to squark out, his feathers unfurling.

"Wait? Children?!" thought Chris, his mind going into overdrive as he hurried back to the nest. He noticed Megan still sitting within the nest, seeming nonchalant about the situation.

"Megan...they're planning on adding children to the Aviary. We've got to help!" squawked Chris, noticing that Megan seemed to barely react.

"Sorry but...no" replied Megan.

"What do you mean no?!" squawked Chris pointedly.

"I mean...I tried to help once" replied Megan. "It only resulted in the Zoo getting a new flamingo, I doubt this time will be any different" finished Megan.

"I...I don't believe you" replied Chris, his voice uneasy. "Well if you won't help...then I will" continued Chris, heading away from the nest as Megan shook her head.

"I wish we could help but...I fear we'll only make things worse" thought Megan, continuing to sit on her eggs. She imagined she'd need to comfort Chris later on. After all, they weren't in a position to help...right?

Currently, Edward and Aisha were outside the Aviary as their mouths widened with fascination. They could already notice the blue jays in a nearby tree and what appeared to be a swan and flamingo near a body of water. Excitement began to fill their little bodies as their smiles widened further.

"Their excitement is definitely contagious," thought Elizabeth, unable to resist a genuine smile herself. "Ok, how about I let you look inside at the birds before we get to work?" offered Elizabeth.

"Yes please!" shouted the pair enthusiastically. As Elizabeth opened the door to the Aviary, the pair ran inside. They began to head further into the Aviary, each eager to see what birds they could discover.

Once they were far enough inside, Elizabeth closed the door behind them. It was done, soon...they would have some new birds in the Aviary.

Edward and Aisha wandered through the Aviary, excitement present on their faces as they did so. They were quickly glancing around, trying to find some of the other birds occupying the Aviary as they did so.

"I see a Heron!" shouted Aisha.

"There's a Toucan up there" responded Edward, pointing into the trees.

The pair were lost in their excitement as they failed to notice Chris approaching them. However, their trance was quickly broken as they heard a loud 'SQUAWK!.'

The pair turned around, noticing Chris. He unfurled his feathers, trying to ensure he kept their attention as their mouths widened with excitement. "You need to get out of here!" squawked Chris, his tone urgent but appearing to fall on deaf ears.

However, his warnings were appearing to have the opposite effect as Edward and Aisha approached Chris. He tried to walk back but was unable to move quick enough as he felt the pair touch his feathers cautiously.

This was all it took for a sensation to flow out of Chris and into the twins. The twins immediately removed their hands from Chris, feeling a sensation flowing through their bodies.

Chalking it down to a stomach ache, the twins began to feel a minor discomfort come over them as Chris could only watch in horror.

"Wait...was Megan right?" thought Chris, feeling an immediate sense of guilt come over him. He had been trying to save the twins, not doom them!. He felt unable to turn away as he noticed their discomfort growing, no doubt about to transform them into new residents of the Aviary.

"Edward...what's happening?" thought Aisha, feeling discomfort in her arms. They felt oddly...filling. She noticed a similar discomfort coming from her brother as she looked down at her fingers.

The sight of her fingers blackening was enough to make the girl scream.

"My fingers...are those feathers?!" said Aisha, her tone frantic as they puffed out. She felt them beginning to push against her jacket, forcing it off her as it fell to the ground. This allowed the girl to have a full view of her developing wings which she flapped.

In contrast, Edward was flapping his own wings which had emerged, a small smile on his face.

"This...this is actually kinda sick," thought Edward, his smile widening. However, he then noticed his sister's panic at her own wings as he moved forward. He was determined to comfort his sister, even as they were changing.

"Aisha? I'm coming" said Edward, moving toward his sister as he cuddled her. Aisha seemed to calm down as her brother tightened his hug. Even as their feet began to tingle, cramping up, no doubt about to change them further, they hugged each other tightly.

After all, they were known as the 'Cuddle Bugs' at school and were very fond of physical affection.

The pair began to feel a tingling in their feet as their toes began to merge. Toenails were exchanged for talons which tore easily through their socks. They began to push against their shoes, eventually causing them to burst into rags alongside the remaining scraps of their socks. Their new talons scraped across the ground absentmindedly, the twins more focused on keeping each other comfortable as their legs began to change.

The texture of their skin began to change, first affecting their new talons as they hardened, turning grey as they became more rigid. Their mobility was quickly limited, muscles shifting and changing within as the twins could feel a discomfort emerging from their thighs.

"I...I think our feathers are growing in" said Aisha, her worried tone indicating her fear. She was able to see the black feathers like her wings beginning to form on her thighs as she could only imagine the same happening to her brother.

"It seems so but...are you ok?" asked Edward, unable to hide his joy at what was happening. He eyed his sister who seemed rather uncertain. However, she then plucked up, a small smile emerging on her own face as she glanced back at her brother.

"As long as I'm with you...I'll be ok" replied Aisha, her smile widening as her legs finished their change. It was then she felt another sensation puffing up around her chest. Her skirt tore loose as it fell to the ground as Aisha's shirt was beginning to tear.

She noticed Edward was still wearing his jacket which now seemed to be uncomfortable on his changing body. Aisha moved forward once more as she, with some effort, tugged at the jacket until she was eventually able to remove it. Edward's phone came out of it, hitting the ground with a 'thud.'

"Thank you," said Edward, his glance grateful as his shirt was beginning to give way. Aisha's did the same as the same black feathers had spread across their upper bodies. They looked around with confusion as the transformation began to seep into their minds, encouraging new instincts to take root within.

It was then a sudden beam of light came through the Aviary. It shined down on Edward's phone, the light reflecting as it caught the attention of the changing ravens.

"Shiny!" croaked the pair, their voices having deepened as they moved as fast as they could. They eyed the shiny phone intently, a new instinct in their mind making it rather alluring as they felt a growth emerging in their rear.

As the pair eyed Max's phone intently, they felt a new tail growing from their rear. The feathers were black, lengthening longer and longer until the twins both had matching tails. However, they paid them no mind as the phone desired much more of their attention.

"Wait...what are we doing?" thought Aisha, her mind clearing momentarily. "Edward?" asked Aisha, getting her brother's attention as the pair looked around the Aviary.

They could've sworn it was larger only a moment before.

"Wait...have we shrunk?" thought Aisha, noticing the trees were much larger than before. They felt more imposing as well as she quickly gripped her brother for comfort.

"I'm 'caw' here for 'caw'" said Edward, realising his vocals were shifting.

"I 'caw'" replied Aisha, feeling surprisingly happy. "As long as my brother is here...I think I'll be ok" thought Aisha.

It was then the pair felt a growth beginning to emerge from their faces. They could only stare at each other as they noticed their lips beginning to push out. They turned grey as they did so, forcing their way out into new beaks for the pair of twins. Their teeth began to withdraw, their tongues shifting to become better suited for them.

"I love 'caw'" said Aisha, her vocals deepening as she stared at her brother once more. She felt...surprisingly content. Even as the feathers continued to spread over her, erasing her pigtails from her head. Even as her eyes shifted, becoming better suited for the task of flight. Aisha felt her changes complete themselves as she eyed her brother.

"We'll 'caw'dle up soon...I promise'' reassured Edward, smiling as the feathers covered the last remaining parts of his body. His blond hair began to fade away, his last traces of humanity disappearing. His eyes shifted like his sisters as the changes settled themselves in.

It was finished, the Aviary had claimed two more birds, more specifically, a pair of ravens for its collection.

"I...I can't believe this" thought Chris, having found himself forced to watch the twins changing. He felt sick to his stomach as he felt partially responsible. "Megan was right...we can't help anymore" continued Chris, feeling a sudden wave of depression come over him as he forced himself to leave.

The newly transformed ravens, having noticed the fleeing peacock, stared at each other confusingly. Aisha gazed at her brother, wondering if he, like herself, could remember who he was. The suspense was beginning to make her uneasy as she knew only one way to get the answers she desired.

"Edward? Edward, are you there?" croaked Aisha, momentarily surprised by the complete animal sound her new body had produced.

"Aisha?" replied Edward, craning his neck slightly. He had little time to react before his sister came forward. She wrapped her new wings around her brother. Edward stood still as she did so, fully aware that his sister needed assurance he would stay.

"It's ok, I won't leave you Aisha" reassured Edward, comforting his sister to the best of his ability. The pair stayed still for a moment longer, both taking comfort that whatever came next, they wouldn't have to face it alone.

"So, how about we settle in?" croaked Edward, noticing his sister looking up at him.

"I'd...I'd like that" replied Aisha, seeming to have calmed down. She flapped her wings experimentally, noticing her brother doing the same.

With that, as if they had been born as ravens, the pair took off into the air. Their new instincts helped the pair keep afloat as they looked around, trying to find a place to call...home. They considered taking Edward's phone but unfortunately, it was now too big for the small ravens.

"Still seems strange to think of this place as home," thought Aisha, concern fluttering in her mind. However, she quickly dismissed it, determined to keep focused on flying.

Aisha noticed her brother seemed to be heading towards a rather peculiar structure. It was a large structure, appearing to be modelled after a tower. It had many different holes within, giving the impression that it was one large birdhouse for the smaller residents...and residents to be of the Aviary.

"I think we should stay there...in the tower" croaked out Edward, heading upwards as his sister followed. Soon Edward noticed a nest on the top floor of the tower. He slowed down, controlling his descent as he landed. He 'smiled' as he noticed his sister doing the same.

"I guess this is our home now" croaked Edward, staring at his sister once more.

"Guess so" replied Aisha, Edward still concerned by her tone. It was then Aisha came towards him as they cuddled. The pair found comfort as they prepared for this new chapter in their lives.

It seemed as if their reputation as 'Cuddle Bugs' wasn't going to disappear after all.

Currently, Megan was sitting in her nest as she looked around. She shook her head irritably, wondering where Chris could have gotten off to.

"Where is that overly optimistic idiot?" thought Megan, still feeling conflicted about not going with him. Still...one of them had to keep an eye on the eggs.

It was then she noticed the familiar tailfeathers of Chris...her mate. Megan shook the thought from her mind, still annoyed that her instincts had some influence over her mind.

"So...how did it go?" asked Megan. From Chris's 'expression', she already had an idea of the answer but decided to play dumb.

"It...it didn't work" started Chris, his tone sullen. "You were right Megan...we can't help them" continued Chris, standing by the nest. He relaxed slightly as Megan looked at him concerningly.

"I...why do I feel sorry for him?" thought Megan, feeling conflicting emotions as she watched Chris. "Is it...is it because I wanted to be wrong?" continued Megan. Despite her disliking of Chris, she couldn't help but feel...sorry for him.

"It's ok Chris...you tried your best" started Megan, attempting to reassure him. "After all, we can still help them. It'd just be in helping them get used to their new forms...if they want our help" continued Megan.

"I'd...I'd like that idea" replied Chris. He shifted slightly towards Megan, stopping himself as Megan realised what he was about to do.

"Oh...come here you big softie" squawked Megan, permitting Chris to come close to her. The pair came together, finding comfort as they 'cuddled' close together. Chris looked appreciatively at Megan, content for the moment.

"Perhaps she's warming up to me after all," thought Chris, 'smiling' as the peafowl settled into their nest. After all, there was a possibility that they had a long journey ahead of themselves.

But for now...they were content to simply rest.

Outside the Aviary:

Elizabeth stood outside the Aviary, a small smile on her face. She looked inside, trying to get sight of Edward and Aisha. After a few moments, she shrugged her shoulders, confident that they had been transformed.

It was at that point the Spirit emerged once more, a small smile on its face as it prepared to feed.

Small waves of energy came from the surrounding areas of the Zoo as they began to combine into several large waves. They started at the Feline Sanctuary, causing the big cats to begin to immediately tire. Almost all of them dropped where they were, feeling drained as the Spirit desired fuel.

"Guess the Spirit...is...feeding again?" thought Catilyn, looking around the Sanctuary. She eyed her parents, noticing her own mother fainting. As Caitlyn glanced around, noticing her own brother fainting from tiredness, an increasingly familiar emotion rocked her core...guilt.

However, before she could think further on this, Caitlyn herself succumbed as she passed out. She slept as she felt her energy leaving her, a cruel mercy from the thoughts that had been conflicting her mind.

Another wave continued at the Canine Sanctuary. The Wolves and Arctic Foxes began to feel rather tired as Mindy and Bethany laid themselves down. The pair had clearly become familiar with what was going on. They took care, making sure not to accidentally squash their young who effectively buried themselves within their mothers for cover as Andy and Keith laid beside their mates.

Merryl, William and Dawn began to feel the same tiredness come over them. However, before they could react, they all collapsed in a pile. From an outside perspective, it actually looked quite cute as the skulk snoozed together without a care in the world.

Elsewhere, Quinn was currently minding her own business. She needed some time away from the others as she still felt rather uncomfortable with her new form. Hopefully, she'd be changed back to normal tomorrow and be able to put this whole incident behind her.

"That is...if Rebecca was actually being sincere" thought Quinn, doubt clouding her mind as she felt rather frustrated with her predicament. "Why did Mother coerce me into this? I didn't want..." started Quinn, feeling a sudden draining sensation coming from within.

"Wait...what's...going" began Quinn, unable to finish her sentence as she slumped over. She swiftly fell asleep, it proving to be a temporary release from the discomfort of her predicament.

The strands of magical energy continued to spread across the New Zoo. The animals contained within began to tire and fall asleep as more and more energy came from them. From the Outside Section to the Reptile House to the Petting Zoo, no place was immune as the animals found their energy being absorbed for the Spirit's lone benefit.

Valeria was walking within the Outside Section, aware that Elizabeth had long since arrived. She was carrying the wicker basket she had been given under her arm. She took great care not to let the eggs move too much lest they might crack.

It was then Valeria felt a sudden sensation come across her body. It was then she felt goosebumps across her skin, the small hairs on edge.

Something didn't feel right.

She looked towards one of the nearby enclosures, quickly recognising the penguin residents. They seemed to be swiftly tiring as if something was being...taken from them.

"I should find the Spirit...perhaps it knows what's going on," thought Valeria as she picked up her pace. She guessed that Elizabeth would be within the Main Hallway as she headed in that general direction, unaware of the horrifying discovery she was about to make.

Meanwhile, the waves began to focus towards the Spirit's location as they pulled into it. The Spirit smiled with satisfaction as it began to feel recharged from all the magical energy it was devouring. The Spirit's appetite was appeased as it finally finished feeding, a happy and content smile emerging on its face as it did so.

"Happy with your meal?" asked Elizabeth, a smile on her face.

"Certainly" replied the Spirit, feeling extremely satisfied with itself. While the feeding could have been considered gluttonous, the Spirit hadn't had a proper chance to feed like that since the Zoo had returned and it wasn't going to miss the opportunity.

"Wait...what?" said a new voice. Elizabeth and the Spirit turned to face the newcomer. They noticed Valeria, an uneasy expression on her face. The wicker basket under her arm seemed to be shaking, mirroring her fear at what she had witnessed.

"How much did you hear?!" demanded Elizabeth, quickly in Valeria's face.

"Enough" replied Valeria simply, glaring down at Elizabeth. "I...I can't believe..." started Valeria.

"Start believing" interrupted Elizabeth, a smug smile on her face. "After all...you're now part of this" continued Elizabeth, swinging her arms smugly.

"I thought transforming people, even children was bad but this...this is deplorable '' said Valeria, her voice uneasy as the implications of what she was now involved in truly began to sink in.

"What's so deplorable about feeding?" asked the Spirit curiously, still wondering what the problem was.

"It's...you're feeding on people's energy" replied Valeria, her mouth still in shock. She thought back to her daughter at that moment as her confidence began to rise.

"They're not people anymore...they're animals...our animals" stated Elizabeth. She began to walk forward towards Valeria who still appeared terrified of the situation. "Why are you surprised? What did you truly expect when you agreed to work here? Did you really think we'd stop adding to our collection?" asked Elizabeth pointedly.

"I...I expected you to have some self-control" replied Valeria. "I mean...you can already get additions via the juvenile teenagers but...children?" added Valeria.

"You must have realised this would happen when you suggested the idea of having children volunteer" stated Elizabeth as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. "Besides...your idea is rather good actually" continued Elizabeth, attempting to reassure Valeria who shifted back in disgust.

"You're...you're a monster...both of you," said Valeria, her look of disgust still present. However, she was caught off guard by Elizabeth's reaction to her statement.

Elizabeth started to laugh. It started as chuckles, developing into laughs and then evolving into downright guffaws. After what felt like forever, Elizabeth eventually regained her composure. She glanced sadistically at Valeria, her smile wide as she felt it was time for some discipline.

"You have no idea what you're talking about" replied Elizabeth, a smile on her face as a wave of magic began to come over her. The Spirit could only look on in surprise as Valeria stepped backwards in fear.

"Don't worry...I've been practising" stated Elizabeth, sending the message straight to the Spirit's mind. Elizabeth walked forward, her eyes becoming coated in turquoise as a green aura began to emerge from her body. Her smile widened unnaturally as she eyed Valeria like a predator that had cornered its prey.

"I am warning you now Valeria" began Elizabeth, her voice echoing across the Main Hallway as the energy of the Spirit flowed through her. "You're on very thin ice" continued Elizabeth, raising her hand as Valeria, against her will, began to be lifted into the air. Elizabeth pulled Valeria towards her, taking a moment to revel in the fear the woman was showing her.

"She almost looks like..." thought Elizabeth, dismissing the thought. After all, she needed to focus to ensure she got the message across.

"If you continue on this path, I ensure you'll be added to the Zoo as far away from your daughter as possible...understood?!" shouted Elizabeth, her voice echoing out as a minor patch of distortion was emerging. However, before it could develop, Elizabeth dropped Valeria down as she continued to glare at her from above.

"Now...get out of my sight!" shouted Elizabeth, her voice booming as Valeria nodded, tears in her eyes. They began to fall as Valeria made a hasty retreat. Valeria continued to leave, terrified for herself but more importantly...terrified for her daughter.

It seemed as if she truly had signed a deal with the devil.

Elizabeth watched Valeria leave, smiling in satisfaction as she slowly lowered herself. She noticed the wicker basket with the eggs inside as she picked them up, happy with her bounty.

"Elizabeth...are you ok?" asked the Spirit, its tone concerned for its best friend.

Elizabeth turned to look at the Spirit, then back the wicker basket full of eggs. Her mind raced for a moment as old wounds threatened to reopen. Fortunately, Elizabeth was able to force them back shut...for now.

"Now...I think I need some space away from her but tomorrow...we need to talk," said Elizabeth. "Please keep an eye on Dominic and Valeria...especially after what just happened" continued Elizabeth, preparing her departure.

The Spirit let her go, knowing that trying to ask questions now was likely to end badly. After all, it would take Elizabeth at least a few hours to calm down.

"See you tomorrow," said the Spirit, sending the message to Elizabeth's mind. It then turned away as it wondered what it should do.

After a moment, it decided to fade away. It planned to keep an eye on Marie...and her parents.

After all, the Spirit liked Valeria and honestly, thought Elizabeth had been too harsh this time.

At the Outside Section:

Valeria hadn't stopped running. After all, she needed to get away from Elizabeth, from the Spirit, from this damn Zoo.

Yet deep down, she knew she couldn't. After all, the Spirit was locked in her mind, as if it was watching her every move. She bent down, smacking the ground beneath her. Unfortunately, all this accomplished was injuring her hand. She noticed blood spilling from her knuckles, feeling an immediate sense of regret at her anger.

"Why...why did I agree to this?" thought Valeria, the tears continued to pour from her eyes. "Why didn't I pay more attention to my daughter?" said Valeria, feeling regretful at her actions that had gotten her to this point.

"Valeria...are you ok?" asked a mysterious voice. Valeria looked up, recognising the Spirit which appeared to have a concerned expression on its face.

"Why...why do you care?" asked Valeria, her tone a mixture of anger and...betrayal. "You've already claimed my daughter...come to rub it in?" continued Valeria, her tears still stoned her face.

"No...I came...to see if you were ok" said the Spirit. Valeria looked confused for a brief moment, she clearly hadn't expected that answer.

"No...I'm not ok" replied Valeria, now sitting down as she gazed at her hand. Blood was still coming from it as Valeria began to feel uncomfortable staring at it. However, the Spirit noticed her hand as it came forward.

"Here...let me help," said the Spirit, waving its hand as Valeria watched her hand begin to immediately heal. Within seconds, her hand was good as new as she glanced at the Spirit.

"Thank...thank you," said Valeria gratefully. She still felt conflicted with everything but she at least felt better than she had moments before.

"I...I didn't realise you'd be so put off by my feeding and I'm...I'm sorry" said the Spirit, looking sheepishly at Valeria. "In all honesty, I thought Elizabeth was too harsh on you" continued the Spirit, noticing the look of surprise Valeria gave in response.

"Really? I thought you two were inseparable" said Valeria.

"We are...doesn't mean we can't disagree on something" replied the Spirit. It noticed Valeria still seemed uneasy about her whole situation. "How about you go see Marie? I'm sure she'd like to see you" offered the Spirit, a small smile on its face as it tried to put Valeria at ease.

"That...that sounds like a good idea," mumbled Valeria. She stood up, preparing to leave. "Thank you," said Valeria, her tone sincere as she took one last look at the Spirit.

"Anytime" replied the Spirit simply. It waved as Valeria began to walk away, no doubt heading towards the Petting Zoo. After she left, the Spirit looked up at the Loch that it had originated from. It could sense a disturbance trying to force itself in as it felt...familiar.

"Well...time to go to work," thought the Spirit as it headed towards the Loch. Determination filled up within it as it knew what it had to do.

Somehow, someway, it would keep out whatever was trying to force its way in.

Later that Night:

It had been several hours since the Spirit had begun another purge of the grey influence which was trying to force its way past its barrier. The Spirit breathed heavily as it began to tire itself. The darkness seemed not only stronger but more persistent than its previous attempts.

"C'mon...just a little longer" mumbled the Spirit, concern flowing through its being as it forced away another grey patch that had formed.

However, in its haste, the Spirit failed to notice that a loose tentacle had breached its barrier. It suddenly homed in on the Spirit, stabbing through where its heart should be.

"AHHH!" shrieked the Spirit, the pain immeasurable as its wails vibrated across the Zoo. The sudden pain caused the barrier it had tried so hard to keep up to finally break down. The Spirit could only watch in fear as the barrier crumbled around it, exposing the New Zoo to whatever entity had been trying so hard to force its way through.

"Nice to see you again...old friend," said the voice tauntingly, the Spirit only able to look on with fear.

"Wha...what have you done?" replied the Spirit, the tentacle staked through its heart causing it immeasurable discomfort. It could feel something planting itself inside. However, the Spirit was powerless as it could only glance around.

"I guess it's time to introduce myself," said the voice. The Spirit looked fearfully as it noticed a grey wisp emerge, then another and another as they quickly multiplied, surrounding the Spirit in a cloud of smoke.

It was then the wisps began to merge, combining quickly as they took form. An arm, a leg and various other components quickly became visible as the Spirit could only glance at what had been its adversary. It felt a realisation come over it as it could faintly recall the entity forming in front of it.

"It...it's not possible" mumbled the Spirit.

The entity finished forming as it glanced back towards the Spirit. It resembled a wooden puppet wearing a jester's attire, the wooden eyes seemed unemotive. It was as if they were gazing into the Spirit's soul. Strings dangled from behind it like tentacles, one connecting to the stake through the Spirit's heart. Finally, the entity gazed at the Spirit, its toothy grin shaking the very core of its being. Faint bells could be heard, no doubt coming from the many bells adorning its attire.

"Wait, you're..." started the Spirit.

"They'll be time for introductions later," said the Puppet, the smile remaining strong. "Why are you surprised to see me again? Did you really think you could just close the door on me?...especially after we made such beautiful chemistry together" continued the Puppet.

"You're...you're insane" mumbled the Spirit, wriggling in pain at the tentacle trapped inside it.

"I'm not insane, I'm eager that after a thousand years...it is now, my time" started the Puppet.

"Now, before we can continue, we need your short friend to accompany us" continued the Puppet, raising its hand towards the Spirit. "Now open wide and say ahhhh" finished the Puppet tauntingly as its hand glowed grey.

The Spirit felt an immediate sensation come over it as it cried out, unable to even comprehend the vast pain it was in.

Epilogue:

Elizabeth shot up, startled by the sudden cries in her mind. It took only a moment longer for her to realise they were the Spirits.

"Spirit, Spirit can you hear me," thought Elizabeth, trying to contact it via their shared bond. A look of frustration crossed her face as she looked over at the nearby clock.

"It's four in the morning...but more importantly, something's terribly wrong with the Spirit" mumbled Elizabeth as she quickly threw herself out of bed.

After getting changed into her uniform quickly, she began to head downstairs. She quietly left through the front door, getting into the 'box on wheels' as she quickly departed.

"Don't worry Spirit...I'm coming" thought Elizabeth, panic coming over her as she began the journey towards the New Zoo.

She could only hope she wasn't too late.
