As I said goodbye to the ladies, Memi's curious eyes landed on the large wooden object nearby. "What is this big wooden thing?" she asked.
"It's a carriage or wagon," I explained. "It makes traveling safer and helps transport goods without making the men carry too much."
She looked amazed. "Can we sit on it?"
May jumped in, excited. "Can we?"
"Why not?" I said with a smile.
I turned to Nicholas and Frank, signaling them to shift into their animal forms. While they did, I explained how the harnesses worked to Memi and the girls. I gave the guys a few thankful pats, and they nudged me back in response. With Memi's mate's help, we all climbed into the carriage. Memi and I sat in the front, while the girls settled in the back. I took the reins and gently flicked them to get us moving.
Memi's face lit up. "Wow! It's so high up, and I can see everything!" she exclaimed, standing up to get a better look.
"Careful," I warned.
She laughed and scratched her head playfully. "I'm a leopard—I always land on my feet. Well, most of the time."
I shook my head, chuckling. "You're a silly girl."
Her mates and the guards sighed in relief when she finally sat down. We continued riding through the village, the girls smiling and looking around with excitement.
The male villagers stared in surprise as we passed. They bowed low, calling out, "Queen."
When we passed a hut, Eudora stepped outside, clearly curious about the commotion. It looked like she was confirming something she'd heard earlier. She wasn't in the mood to be stopped, either—she slapped away the hand of Mike, the same man she'd slapped before.
Memi didn't waste any time. She raised her hand and said firmly, "Stop the wagon." Her tone left no room for argument. I signaled the guys to halt.
Her mate rushed to her side to help her down.
Eudora's eyes widened as she took in Memi. "T-The Queen?! You mean to tell me she was telling the truth?! Impossible!" she stammered. Her legs buckled, and her mate caught her. The people around her looked nervous, sensing the gravity of the moment.
Memi's voice dropped, cold and commanding. I felt a shiver even from where I sat. "Oh, it's very possible. In fact, it's true—because I say so. I've also heard some very unpleasant things about you, Eudora. Is it true that you've been bullying and causing trouble for my friend?"
Eudora's mates, along with Mike, quickly bowed low. Mike spoke up. "My Queen, I stepped in before any harm could be done. I told her Imara is under your protection, and we left. Please forgive me for not warning my mate sooner."
Memi's sharp gaze didn't leave Eudora. "I wasn't speaking to you," she said flatly.
Mike lowered his head, falling silent. Memi turned back to Eudora and delivered her final words with authority. "I will not repeat myself."
Eudora seemed to age right before our eyes, shaking and struggling to speak. "I-I-I didn't know she was under your protection, my Queen. I didn't harm her, I swear! Like my mate Mike said, as soon as he told me, I left. I swear it," she stammered.
Memi's gaze stayed steady and unflinching. "And yet, you had another mate," she said, pointing to a different man who looked like he wanted to disappear as everyone's eyes turned to him. "Snooping on Imara. What were your intentions?"
