As I rested my head against Gabriel's chest, trying to process what had just happened, my thoughts raced.
What on earth was that? I had only been teasing the Ape King, keeping things light and harmless. I wasn't even thinking about him as a mate—that wasn't even an option. He already has a mate, and no matter their current issues, they care for each other.
I wasn't trying to interfere. I wanted to build a friendship, a connection that would ensure he sees me and my family as allies, not enemies, in the future. That's all it was supposed to be.
Not... this. Not gazing into each other's eyes and shit, and certainly not holding hands. What was I even doing?
I mentally scolded myself, disappointment sinking deep into my bones. That wasn't me. I wasn't the type of woman to cross lines like this. I took pride in my self-control, and this was a hard slap to my own face.
Yes, I could admit he was attractive, but offering friendship shouldn't have blurred into something like this. I had to make sure that nothing like this happened again.
And not to blame it all on him, but wasn't he supposed to have more resolve? He's mated, after all! What was he thinking? I sighed heavily.
"Get your head together, Imara," I told myself silently. Whatever my thoughts about Qin, his mate, might be, I wasn't here to disrespect her—or myself—like this.
I clung tighter to Gabriel, needing the steady sound of his heartbeat to calm my swirling thoughts. His hand rubbed gently against my head, grounding me further.
I glanced up at him, and he met my gaze with quiet concern. "Are you alright? Did you get what you were hoping for?" he asked softly.
His words made my chest tighten with guilt. I forced a small smile. "Yes, I did. Thank you," I replied, though it felt hollow.
Gabriel frowned slightly, clearly not convinced. "We can talk about it later," he said gently. "Let's go for now."
I nodded. Harvey stepped forward, offering his hand. I took it, and he pulled me close, placing a soft kiss on my forehead. "We'll figure this out together," he murmured.
Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, but I quickly blinked them away. This wasn't the time to break down. There were tasks to handle, and I needed to stay focused on those.
I turned to Bai Qingqing, letting her know we were heading to the market to scout for a good spot and that we'd meet her back at the house once she finished her errands.
For now, I had to push everything else aside and get through the day.
I informed Bai Qingqing that we were heading to the market to choose a prime location and told her we'd meet her back at the house once she finished her to-do list.
At the market, the bustling energy was very clear. Stalls filled with goods lined the pathways, and both males and females were busy trading and going about their day.
Once we settled on a spot, Harvey asked, "When would you like to set up the stall to sell items?"
I thought for a moment before replying, "Let's set it up before the Bonfire Banquet to be in a few days. Many females might not attend because they don't have undergarments. I can sell some there.
We can also use the opportunity to introduce classes to help the city, just like we did in Camel Hump."
Harvey nodded. "That's a wonderful idea."
As we moved further into the heart of the city, we came across a central area with circular paths leading to each castle.
"This is perfect," I said, pointing to the area. "Everyone heading toward the Ape King's castle will pass by here. It's a great spot for visibility and foot traffic."
