The final days before I had to return to Barcelona felt both fleeting and impossibly slow. Each morning, sunlight spilled across the living room, and I found myself lingering over the little routines we'd built: Elijah, now eight months old, wobbling as he sat unassisted on the play mat, reaching eagerly for his toys, and letting out delighted babbles when he managed something new. Leah laughed at every small victory, leaning down to steady him when he tipped over or lifting him into her lap so he could explore the world safely. Her soft voice filled the room, warm and grounding, and I couldn't help but feel my heart expand with every glance.
I loved watching them together. The way Leah's eyes softened when Elijah babbled excitedly at her, the careful way she guided his tiny hands to explore a toy or shake a rattle, the triumphant smiles when he figured something out on his own. Every gesture reminded me why I'd fallen so completely for her — not just the fierce, brave Leah, but this gentle, tender side that only surfaced in moments like this.
One afternoon, I sat cross-legged on the floor with Elijah perched between my legs, wobbling as he tried to reach a plush block. He squealed in delight, batting at it, then promptly tipped forward and laughed when I caught him. Leah knelt beside us, resting a hand lightly on my shoulder.
"You're really good at this," she said softly, watching him squeal and wriggle with excitement.
I grinned down at him. "Yeah, well, he's a fast learner."
"Or he's got good teachers," Leah corrected, nudging my arm with hers. Her eyes met mine, and for a moment, it felt like the rest of the world disappeared — just the three of us, caught in our own little bubble.
Later, after Elijah had fallen asleep in my arms, his tiny chest rising and falling, Leah shifted beside me, resting her head against my shoulder. "He's... really lucky," she murmured. "You've done so much for him, Jae."
I brushed a soft strand of hair from his forehead. "He's lucky to have you too. I can't imagine him without you around."
Her hand found mine, squeezing gently. And suddenly, the conversation we'd both been tiptoeing around felt impossible to avoid.
"Jae... about Elijah..."
I swallowed, my heart beating faster. "Yeah?"
"I know it's been... a while since his parents... you know. And I know you've been thinking about it..."
"I have," I admitted, brushing her hand with mine. "I want to officially adopt him. It just feels... right. Like it's the only way to make sure he knows he's completely ours. And you... you should be on the birth certificate too. I don't care about countries or distance. It feels like it should be you and me. Both of us."
Her hand squeezed mine tighter. "I've imagined it," she whispered. "Being his other parent. I always imagined it with you."
I swallowed hard, a smile tugging at my lips despite the lump in my throat. "I see it, Leah. A future with you. With him. I don't want it any other way."
Her eyes glistened with unshed tears, but the smile that broke through was enough to make my chest ache. "Even if it's not easy, with Barcelona and all?"
"Even then," I said firmly. "I'll find a way. We'll find a way. This... us... it's what matters. And Elijah. I can't imagine him with anyone else, and I can't imagine life without you."
We sat there in the quiet, letting the words hang between us like a promise. Outside, the city hummed, but inside, it was just us and the soft rhythm of Elijah's breathing.
Over the next couple of days, we crammed as many little moments together as we could. Breakfasts filled with laughter over spilled cereal, walks in the park with Leah holding one hand and me holding the other while Elijah reached and wobbled in his stroller, evenings curled up on the sofa watching him scoot toward his toys or babble happily between us, his tiny fingers wrapped around ours. Every shared glance, every gentle touch, every soft laugh drew me closer to Leah, reminding me why I couldn't imagine my life without her.
