"you should tell him jake! you're leaving in like 3 months and you guys aren't even speaking! don't you think he'd want to be in good terms when you go?" jungwon insisted on him friday night at the younger's house.
"but it hurts... i don't know if i'll be able to hold on if he starts telling me all the details of his new relationship."
jake had seen the events of mirae kissing heeseung's cheek unfold when he walked by that day. they were sitting in a bench on school grounds and jake just wanted to make it in time to his class, so he took the shortcut, but now he wished he hadn't.
"i understand what you're feeling jakeu, i do. still, if it stays like this any longer, the harder it will be for both of you..." jungwon said softly.
"it's just so scary..." jake cried.
"i know, it's perfectly normal that you feel scared because doing this involves many challenges and going out of your comfort zone. but that's precisely why you should do it. the sooner, the better," jungwon caressed jake's back.
"besides, your birthday's like two weeks away. and i'm sure he's already got your present since before you bought yours for him," jungwon added.
jake nodded his head.
"okay. i will. i don't know how. but i will."
"that's my incredible best friend!" jungwon cheered.
jake smiled again and jungwon was relieved.

the following sunday morning, jake was taking layla on her usual walk (even though she ran a lot). he had felt really thirsty but forgot to bring a bottle of water, so he stopped at a pet-friendly convenience store and bought one.
"jake?"
jake's heart squeezed and his stomach did a flip.
he turned around and forced a small grin on his face, "hey goliath."
"been a while since i heard that," heeseung laughed. "um... mind if i join you? i've... missed layla."
jake noticed right away it was only a poor excuse, but truthfully he missed heeseung too much to decline him.
"of course," he responded. he offered the leash to heeseung with a more natural smile that only heeseung noticed.
in consequence, heeseung's smile also came naturally. the latter grabbed the leash and went outside to wait for jake.
"all done," jake announced once out of the store.
"let's go," heeseung said a little too happy.
the walk back was long, which worried jake at first, but the silence wasn't uncomfortable, just unusual compared to how they used to be. they were almost arriving to their houses but heeseung didn't stop walking. they had passed by their places.
