there were knocks on the front door of his house at 4 in the morning. loud and strong knocks, like the person knocking was severely agitated or had an emergency.
heeseung almost fell from his couch. he tried to get up quickly but he was tangled in the blankets and ended up actually falling for being in a hurry. he was scared it could be his parents and something had happened, but as his head started clearing he realized it was still the weekend and they weren't coming back in at least three more days.
with null care for his appearance, he rushed to the door and opened it, not even looking through the loophole before doing so. there, right on his doorstep, stood sim jaeyun, looking at him with a giant grin that faded quickly into a shocked and flustered expression once he looked at heeseung's bare torso.
heeseung on the other hand couldn't believe his eyes. he couldn't fathom the fact that jake was there, in korea, right in front of him.
"j-jaeyunie?" heeseung whispered with his raspy voice.
"h-hi..." jake stuttered still flustered. "can i come in?"
heeseung didn't even register the cold air coming from outside because of how shocked he was. between mumbling and stuttering, he let jake know he could come inside and closed the door behind him, suddenly looking at jake's back as he walked inside his house for the first time in years.
jake had been shocked as well for finding heeseung only wearing a pair of pants and didn't see the mistletoe hanging right next to the front door. heeseung remembered it was there and both cursed but felt relieved jake didn't notice it. close call, he thought.
as jake took a seat on the free couch heeseung ran to his bedroom and put a shirt on quickly. many questions started formulating in his head. did jake just arrive from australia? was that why he didn't respond to heeseung's texts? why didn't he tell him he was coming? to surprise him? because he definitely did.
he ran back downstairs and saw jake was still shivering a little and rubbing his red-fingered hands together. the younger then blew on his hands and continued to rub them against each other.
heeseung's heart swelled. in his eyes jake only became more and more cute as time passed. the pout jake made to blow on his hands and his flustered face when he opened the door were priceless. heeseung was still down bad...
he cleared his throat and sat opposite jake, who had a bit of a guilty look on his face.
"you're here..." he mumbled.
jake's face broke into a smile and he giggled. "i am... i wanted to surprise you, but i kind of didn't expect to find you half naked..."
heeseung smiled, "well i didn't have much time to put on a shirt. you knocked like it was an emergency... did you just get here? to korea?"
jake nodded, "i couldn't wait to see you. i really missed you, hee."
"it's been only a month..." muttered heeseung, trying to hide his flustered self.
"well, it felt like three years all over again," declared jake. "did you not miss me?"
heeseung didn't expect jake to be so straightforward. in the past, he was the one who always spoke frankly about anything, jake used to always be overly shy. this sudden change reminded him how long it had been, and again, how little he knew of the current jake. and he missed knowing jake.
"of course i did..." heeseung confessed. his hand twitched as if he had wanted to reach out and touch jake, but he didn't.
jake couldn't help but notice and chuckled, realizing as well how much heeseung had changed.
"wait, but what about your school? what about the exchange program?" heeseung couldn't stop himself from asking.
jake smiled knowingly, heeseung had changed and he was worried about jake. and jake thought that maybe everything that led to this moment was worth it.
"i asked for a transfer back here..." and then the guilt invaded his face once more.
"you can just do that?" heeseung asked amused. he didn't know much about exchanges but he didn't expect it to be that easy.
"yes... and no. see, i had to get through a year first before wanting to come back, but a year passed and i couldn't come back not knowing how you were... i was scared and so i stayed there for another year."
as jake was explaining, heeseung felt the pit of his stomach knot and tug with a sinking feeling.
"once the year was about to end, the school counselor said i could choose if i wanted to continue my studies there or come back here. the thought of seeing you again was both exciting and terrifying though, and time passed and i didn't ask for the transfer on time... so i stayed... but i never imagined you'd go all the way over there to see me. i didn't think you were genuine about your feelings and i was scared i could be right."
jake stopped to let heeseung take it all in, waiting for the hurt in heeseung's face and to see it all fall down again.
none of that happened though, heeseung smiled and took jake off guard when he grabbed his hand.
"u-uhm... hee?" jake asked quivering a little.
"there's nothing you should feel bad about jaeyunie, i'm glad you chose to stay. i'm glad you chose you, and i might sound selfish, but i wouldn't have been able to live with myself knowing you gave up your dream just for me."
jake's eye spilled a tear and heeseung wiped it away with his free hand.
"i thought you'd be hurt because of it," jake sniffled. "you were hurting for three years because of me and i-i just stayed there when you had asked me to stay here..."
jake broke down a little in sobs, not really because he was feeling guilty, but because he was relieved heeseung was so good to him.
"i was surprised to hear that, but it doesn't change that i will always want what's best for you because i love you—
