"i think i'm ready to tell you..." jake confessed.
"tell me what?" the other asked.
"why i've been acting so jumpy and a bit distant..."
"right, is everything okay? you know you can tell me anything."
"i know. i just didn't want to say it yet."
"that's okay. is there a particular reason why you didn't want to?"
"yes. it's scary to say out loud."
"ah, i understand."
"..."
"whenever you're ready."
"...i'll just say it."
"okay."
jake sighed. "...i'm in love with heeseung."
there was silence.
"i knew it!" jungwon yelped.
jake was startled. "you knew?! how? i mean... i hadn't told anyone!"
jungwon giggled, "i wasn't one hundred percent sure but i knew something changed in the way you are around him. i couldn't pinpoint exactly what but i had two theories."
"and those were...?"
"either you loved him or you had started to hate him," jungwon answered.
"hate him? that's hard to do. i don't think i could even if i wanted to," jake pondered.
jungwon smiled at his best friend.
"so i'm officially the first person you've ever told?"
jake nodded.
"ha! take that mr. lee 'i'm-jake's-best-friend' heeseung. that title does belong to me," jungwon mocked.
jake relaxed at jungwon's joke. he felt his muscles loosen and like he could breathe again.
"he really thinks he's all that." jake muttered.
"yeah-huh! he's getting kinda cocky just because he's turning 18 next month."
jake laughed wholeheartedly. he felt relieved after telling jungwon his biggest secret. well, second biggest.
"there's still something else i want to tell you jungwon."
jungwon again paid attention to jake's words and body language. by the way he fidgeted his hands he could tell he was anxious. and if the tiny scratches around his fingernails were any proof of it, he'd say he had been anxious for at least a week.
"go ahead, i'm all ears."
jake took a deep breath in and then let it out.
"i'm leaving next year for an exchange program."
jungwon jumped in joy, "really?! that's great news! where to? busan? daegu? daejeon?"
jake smiled anxiously and shook his head. "it's an international program. i'm going to australia in less than 4 months."
jungwon's mouth fell open.
"yeah... surprise?" jake added unsure.
"you're serious?" jungwon questioned. jake just nodded. "wow... that's definitely big news..."
jake started biting on his lip and jungwon knew right away why he wasn't jumping in joy.
"you have to go! you can't let someone hold you back jake. this is what you've always wanted."
jake nodded, "i know, i know. i am going to go. it's decided. i just don't know how to tell him. or if i should... the first few months i knew i liked him, i thought it was just a small infatuation, that it would go away with time. but it didn't, it just grew and now i'm scared of what could happen to us if i do tell him."
"i don't think we're still talking about the exchange," jungwon teased. "look, you don't have to tell him yet. there's still some time until then, so don't beat yourself up over it."
jake let himself fall on the grass. they were sitting under a tree at the park in jungwon's neighborhood. jungwon followed suit.
"i think he likes someone, too."
jungwon looked at jake, "really?"
jake nodded. "mirae from his physics class. last time i went to his house, we were supposed to watch the newest episode but he just texted all throughout and didn't even notice it ended."
jungwon felt for jake. he knew jake very well and he could tell this was really hard on him.
"do you plan on doing something, then? or do you just not want to do anything at all?" jungwon questioned.
jake sighed heavily. "i'm not sure yet. i guess i'll just keep these feelings buried deep down until i figure out what to do. thank you jungwonie, you're the best."
the younger smiled at him, "it's nothing jakeu! but if you really wanna thank me, please say that again and let me record it so i can brag to heeseung." he added with an actually terrifying smirk.
jake laughed. he felt better now, he just hoped nothing out of the ordinary happened. he just wanted peace.
