"Are you alright?" Caspian asked as we headed back to the crew, distancing myself from Edmund, who trailed behind us alongside Lucy.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I replied quietly, not feeling particularly responsive.
"I'm certain he didn't mean those words," Caspian reassured me. "That boy cares deeply for you... We were under some sort of enchantment, as Lucy mentioned earlier."
I remained silent, my gaze fixed on the ground as we walked on.
"What food did you find?" Caspian inquired as we reached the crew. Gael's father knelt beside the baskets holding the meager findings. "It's volcanic, Your Majesty. There's not much that grows."
"Where's Eustace?" Lucy scanned the surroundings, unable to locate her cousin.
"I believe he's off somewhere, not lending a hand with loading the boats," Reepicheep chimed in. Despite Lucy's calls, there was no response from the typically talkative boy.
"Edmund, I have a bad feeling," Lucy expressed with concern evident in her voice.
"I'll go find him," I murmured, feeling the need to stroll away and escape the presence of the brunette Pevensie. I started walking, only to catch Edmund's voice behind me.
"I'll come with you," he offered. Pausing momentarily, I turned to face the boy.
Tension lingered between us, a residue from our earlier encounter in the cave. I tightened my jaw, pivoting away and continuing my walk, acknowledging Edmund's offer silently. Caspian's voice chimed in, expressing his intention to join us as I pressed forward in silence.
As we moved away from the crew's sight, the two boys called out for Eustace while I remained silent. Soon, we stumbled upon a pile of gold.
"Treasure," Ed exclaimed, to which Caspian responded, "Trouble."
"Careful now. We don't need a repeat of you losing your mind over these bloody cursed treasures," I snapped tersely, without bothering to glance their way, before leaping down.
The two trailed behind me, and suddenly, Edmund surged ahead, picking up a scorched single shoe that I assumed belonged to Eustace.
"Eustace," Ed called out with concern, scanning the area further until we stumbled upon his cousin's burned blouse on the ground.
"No," he whispered, examining Eustace's blouse before retrieving his diary.
"Oh, cousin," Ed murmured with a mix of sorrow and guilt, despite his previous irritation with the boy.
"I'm sorry," Caspian expressed sympathetically.
"He was just a boy..." Ed's face was filled with guilt as he stared at his cousin's diary. "I never should have left him."
