As I swiftly sat up, the scene unfolded before me-the sea serpent's piercing shriek reverberating through the air as Caspian wielded his sword, slicing through one of the creature's appendages. With a furrow forming between my brows, I redirected my attention to the two boys.
"Was I out for long?" I asked, attempting to gauge the passage of time.
"No, not at all," Caspian reassured me, his focus momentarily shifting to the serpent's severed limb, which transformed into a green mist.
"We have to get it closer," Ed declared, rising from his spot and pulling me along with him.
"Stay here, I'll handle it," Ed asserted, his tone firm, but I stepped closer, my eyes sharp and unwavering. "I'm coming with you, Ed. I'm not letting you face this alone."
He shook his head sharply, frustration and fear etched across his face. "No, you're not. If anything happens to you because of me... I'd never forgive myself."
I grabbed his arm, my grip steady and voice firm. "No! It's me who I would never forgive if something happened to you and I wasn't there! I'm not staying behind, Ed. Not now, not ever."
He clenched his jaw, his hands tightening around mine. "You don't know what that serpent is capable of! It's dangerous-I can't risk losing you!"
I met his gaze unwaveringly. "I know what I'm capable of. I can handle myself. You don't need to worry about me."
He took a deep breath, his eyes softening as he cupped my face. "I know you're strong, I know you can fight... but it doesn't matter how capable you are. If something happens to you because of me, I'd never forgive myself. You're everything to me-I can't risk that."
We stood like that for a tense moment, eyes locked, breaths heavy, hearts pounding, the chaos around us fading into the background.
I could feel the surge of protectiveness in me, not fear, not desperation but a fierce determination to stand by him, to keep him safe, no matter the cost.
Then, he softened, cupping my face gently. "Listen to me... I promise, I'll get through this. And I need you to trust me... trust us. You staying here, it's not because I don't want you with me. It's because I want you to be safe."
I gave a small nod, my resolve steady, not backing down, but finally trusting him in that moment.
"If anything goes wrong, remember I love you so much," he murmured, pressing a brief but meaningful kiss to my lips amid the chaos.
