Today is the day!
I woke to the warmth of the sun gently caressing my face and its golden hue painting the sky. Anna greeted me with a breakfast fit for a queen: fresh fruits, an assortment of meats, and homemade pastries. Soon, Martha joined us, declaring that she couldn't miss my special day. "Special day?" I responded, confused. In unison, Martha and Anna exclaimed, "It's your wedding day!" I was left speechless but overwhelmingly excited.
All the ladies gathered around to help me prepare for the ceremony. Remember that beautiful white dress Anna generously bought for me the day before? She was in on the entire surprise. Thankfully, she also convinced me to get my hair braided. Otherwise, I would have looked like a bush lady. With my physical appearance ready, it was now time to prepare spiritually and mentally.
Before leaving, I joined my girls in prayer, feeling a sense of peace wash over me. To God be the glory.
As I stepped into the church that had become my home, my heart raced with a mix of excitement and nervousness. Old friends and new ones gathered, along with both of our families. My children, grandson, mother, father, friends, and family were all there via video chat. In the short time since the proposal, Archie had asked for and received their blessing. Waiting just outside the church entryway, I could hear the angelic voices of the congregation singing "The Blessing" by Elevation Music in Swahili. My eyes swelled with tears. The church doors suddenly burst open, revealing a beautifully adorned sanctuary filled with fragrant flowers and an aisle covered with petals.
My groom, Archie, stood at the altar, his eyes filled with love and devotion as he watched me approach. My hands trembled as I clutched the bouquet, handmade just for me. The sanctuary fell quiet as Pastor Mike began the ceremony.
My Vows
Today, standing before God and our loved ones, I make a sacred promise to you. I vow to love you as Christ loves the church, with a selfless and unwavering love. I promise to support you in all your endeavors, to stand by your side in times of joy and in times of trial, and to pray for you daily. I pledge to respect and honor you, to listen with compassion and to speak with kindness. Together, we will seek God's will for our lives, trusting in His plan and His timing. I commit to growing with you in faith, serving with you in ministry, and sharing the gospel as one united in Christ. With God's grace, I will strive to be a Proverbs 31 wife, bringing strength, dignity, and wisdom to our home. I will cherish you, encourage you, and remain faithful to you all the days of my life.
Archie's Vows
Today, in the presence of God and our loved ones, I make a covenant with you. I vow to love you as Christ loves the church, sacrificially and unconditionally. I promise to lead our family with humility and strength, seeking God's guidance in all things. I pledge to honor and cherish you, to listen with an open heart, and speak with gentle words. Together, we will walk in faith, trusting in God's promises and His provision. I commit to supporting you in your calling, praying for you fervently, and serving alongside you in our ministry. With God's help, I will strive to be a man of integrity, bringing wisdom, patience, and grace to our home. I will love you, encourage you, and remain faithful to you all the days of my life.
Both Together
As we join our lives today, we acknowledge that our union is a reflection of Christ's love for His church. We commit to building a home founded on faith, hope, and love. May our marriage be a testimony of God's grace and a beacon of His light in the world. With God's help, we will nurture and strengthen our bond, growing together in His love and service. We dedicate our lives to glorifying Him, sharing His word, and spreading His love. This is our solemn vow, made before God, each other, and all those gathered here today. Amen.
During the exchange of rings, everyone cheered in their native tongues. As the pastor pronounced us husband and wife, the church erupted in applause and cheers. Archie and I shared our first kiss, sealing our love and commitment. We decided to incorporate jumping the broom into our wedding ceremony as a way to honor my heritage and acknowledge the struggles and triumphs of my ancestors. The broom itself is decorated with ribbons, flowers, and other ornaments.
Our special day concluded with an equally special night, filled with celebrations that exceeded our expectations. We marked the occasion with a blend of worship, prayer, delicious food, joy, laughter, and endless fun that continued throughout the night. Encircled by our village, we welcomed our first morning as husband and wife alongside our cherished friends.
