Ethan hadn't meant for a long nap, but judging by the darkened sky and the grogginess he felt, a couple of hours must have passed.
He kept the promise of his snack once he checked the time, cutting up and eating the fruit he had bought earlier.
His watch told him his assumption was correct, but he still had time to kill before the bar even opened. He didn't know much about it, so he assumed it would be a normal 'old men hitting on early 20s women' type of place.
He really couldn't have been more wrong. Upon arrival, music blasted probably a half a block away. The neon lights decorated the sidewalks, and a line almost longer than a parade starting at the door.
He paid the Uber, trying to find the back door to get in. With no luck, he went to the guards at the door, hearing grumbled from the first 10 people in line.
"Back of the line, you should know how this works," the girl on the right of the entrance roller her eyes.
"Oh- Uhm, I'm sorry," He scratched at the back of his neck awkwardly. "I-I actually work here..tonight. It's my first shift."
The girl looked him up and down, not moving an inch to let him in. "Back of the line. I've heard that before."
He frowned, pulling out his phone to show her his schedule. "I do work here."
Shocked, the girl let him in. He scoffed and glared at her as he passed, though he did somewhat understand her skepticism.
The inside, shockingly, was nice. Everything looked expensive, even the bar area. There were different lounges, separated from where the music was blasting. Nobody was here yet, just the workers setting up for the night.
A few glanced up at him, then went back to minding their own business. Nervous and fidgety, he went up to one.
They glanced up at him, unamused. "Yes?"
"Uh, I was wondering if you knew where the boss was, possibly? Or where I get the uniform o-or.."
"Ah. I see, new guy?" Ethan nodded. "Go over by the bar, follow the rim until you see the hallway. From there, go to the room 2nd down on the right. They'll help you."
"Thanks!" He rushed to follow the instructions, thankful for their help. It took him a minute at most to find the door, their hand reaching for the handle.
The door hadn't even moved before a voice inside called him into the room. He peeked in, his anxiety rising. Was he late? Was he meant to have his uniform? Should he have knocked before?
"Ah, new hire. Welcome!" The lady at the desk beamed at him, standing and reaching a hand forward.
He shook it, slightly taken back by his nice demeanor even with how busy the night had looked to become.
"Kate, she works at the bar, will show you where your uniform is. I know you'll be making only non-alcoholic drinks, but for the next few nights, you'll be sticking with her. She'll show you where all the ingredients are for different drinks, and if you have any questions, she'll be there help," she talked him through his first shift like he were a child. Of course, in her eyes, he probably was.
Anxiety tried to take more control as he listened, everything sounding more complicated than he had thought. He did his best to ignore it, smiling through the instructions.
Hours later, his uniform had fit him perfectly, and he'd only messed up a few orders. Most were regulars and didn't recognize him, so they stayed patient. They would smile, talk casually over the loud music, and thank him when he got it right.
A few left tips, for example, when he got the order right and he had put in a small show with making the drinks. Now, his shift was nearing its end, him cleaning his bar area with a mop. He has had no doubt his shoes were going to need a deep cleaning to stop sticking to the ground.
Kate had been patient and so kind to him throughout the night, only a few playful scowls when he spilled a drink. Thankfully, nobody was in the 'splash zone' besides him.
The music still blasted, and proud members still danced, but he was ready to go home. Kate smiled, amused at him, then made eye gestures to the end of the bar. He glanced over, a tall, muscular man staring back at him.
Kate moved closer, yelling over the music for him to hear. "He's been there most of the night. You should go say Hi." She winked, then went to fill a glass.
Ethan really enjoyed working with Kate already. He left to the back, changing back to the casual clothing he brought. He looked so out of place compared to the amount of people dressed up.
While changing, he couldn't decide whether to go home and ignore the man, or get his number and blow off some steam from the day.
