Maria's Friend

Shadow's POV

I could hardly believe what I was staring at.
Maria, My Maria, my sister who was like a literal angel on earth, and the sweetest person in the world, was holding the hand, and talking to THE Surge the Tenrec, the criminal.

I had no idea what I was doing but I did it anyways. I ran across the street, Sonic chasing after me, calling my name and telling me to wait.

Maria spotted me as I ran up to them.
She then froze but immediately stood in front of Surge in a protective position.

"Shadow! Hey!" She said, nervously.

"Maria. Robotnik." I growled, stopping but glaring at Surge wishing my gaze would choke the ever living soul out of her. "What are doing with this piece of shit."

"Language! Also Surge is my friend!" She said, placing her hands on her hips and looking up at me. "We're just hanging out! No need to get overprotective!"

Sonic caught up stood next to me.

"Hey Maria, Hey Surge." He said.

"Oh hello Sonic! You cut your quills! It looks great!" She said.

"Wait Sonic?" Asked Surge, leaning over, her chin resting on Maria's shoulder.

How dare she touch someone as perfect and pure as my sister! I tried to control my anger, seeing as Maria wasn't harmed or in a panic. Her heart rate was steady so I knew she wasn't acting, was she actually calmly hanging around this, this, criminal?!?

"Oh yeah, Surge I'm trans, I'd like to be identified as he/him and call me Sonic, please." Sonic said with a smile.

"Oh, cool." Said Surge, as she wrapped her arms around Maria's waist, leaning her head into her neck. "Yo Blondie, can we go now, you said you wanted to show me this cool thing or something..."

I had to restrain myself from chaos blasting her right in the face.

"You are not leaving until you explain." I growled.

"Shadow, calm down. I know Surge doesn't have the best record but she's very nice...to me and Amy at least." Maria said, placing a hand on my shoulder, trying to anchor my aggravation.
"Amy introduced me to her a while ago and we've been hanging out a bit. I know you get extremely busy with your work and I'm one of the less involved members of our team, so I was hoping I could have someone show me around earth? This was my dream ever since I was a little girl, this was our dream since we were kids, living on the ARK?" She said taking my hands in hers. "I know you've gotten around earth, and you've seen all sorts of things but It's only been two years and a half since I was revived and I really want to get to know the world around me."

"But Surge?!? Really?!?" I said, a little less angry now, just more concerned for Maria's safety.

"Shadow Black Robotnik, you of all people know I like giving people another chance. And Surge isn't all that bad! She's actually awfully sweet!" Said Maria with a smile.

"Yeah, listen to your sister." Hummed Surge, who hadn't let go of Maria.

I glared at her but then Maria cleared her throat, and my attention snapped back to her.

"You are not allowed to attack or threaten Surge as long as she's with me. She's not as bad as she comes off as, and besides..." Maria smirked. "I like a little bit of danger."

I opened my mouth to say something but Maria stopped me again.

"Now I presume that you and Sonic were off to go do something and Surge and I are going to the butterfly gardens down in the north part of the city." She said.

"Oh yeah! We were going to meet Amy and Blaze down at the Main Street shops! Looks like we're headed in the same direction!" Said Sonic, grabbing onto my arm.

The rest of our group had caught up and apparently watched mine and Maria's dispute.

"Oh, well lovely! Come on let's go!" Maria said, as Surge let go of her waist and took her hand.

"So, how's everything been recently?" Sonic asked Surge as we walked.

"Oh ya know, nothing much. Just hanging with Mar here a lot. I kinda got my own place now so I ain't livin in the boss's basement." Shrugged Surge.

"You mean the man who practically caused the Zombot outbreak?" I grumbled.
I didn't like Starline much, no one did.

"You say that like it's my fault." Groaned Surge, exchanging hate filled glances with me.

"Ahem!" Hissed Maria.

"Sorry Maria." I mumbled.

"Sorry Mar." said Surge.

Maria sighed.
"Looks like Shadow's found something new to argue..." Sighed Silver.

"What do you mean by that?" I snapped.

"You'd argue with Sonic all the time before you started helped him transition." He said. "Now that you've grown a soft spot for him you've decided to pick on your sister's friend instead."

I rolled my eyes but then noticed Sonic staring at me with an excited, starry gaze.

"What?" I asked.

"You grew a soft spot for me??" He giggled, nuzzling up against my arm. "Looks like the ultimate edgelord has become an ultimate softie for little ole me!"

I snorted and rolled my eyes. "Don't push it faker."

"So are you two like, dating or something?" Asked Surge.

Mine and Sonic's faces immediately went red. He pushed himself away from me, blushing furiously.

"What?!? Pft, No! We're just rivals who are becoming friends! It's nothing like that!" He squeaked.

"I'm not into faker! I'd hardly even call our friendship that close! I'm just keeping a promise I made!" I hissed, looking away from him, feeling embarrassed.

"Mm, alright." Said Surge, shrugging.

Sonic and I didn't talk to each other after that and the entire walk was in silence. We only exchanged glances once or twice by immediately looked away, blushing.

I didn't have feelings for him! He's my rival! I never felt any sort of romantic feelings towards him!
I mean, he seems like the kind of guy I guess I'd be into...
He's sweet and handsome and actually pretty patient with people. And he's saved me a few times, and he's got those pretty emerald eyes-
What the hell?!?
Shadow! Get your head out of the gutter!

"We're here!" Said Rouge, snapping me out of my thoughts.

"Great..." I mumbled.
