"Are you okay, Monroe?" Jake's voice cut through the haze of horror I was feeling. I barely registered his concern, my eyes locked on West.
I fumbled for an answer to Jake's question, but my throat felt tight.
"West, you're joining our class?" Lia said, trying to shift the atmosphere.
My eyes narrowed, almost twitching, "This has to be some sort of twisted joke," I retorted, locking eyes with West.
"Hi to you too, Mads," he gave me a smug smile, which only flared my irritation, "And no, this isn't a joke. I need to choose a subject to do final exams in, so marine biology it be." West replied, his voice smooth.
"West," I snapped, frustration bubbling to the surface.
"Mads," he replied, grinning, those infuriating dimples making an appearance.
Dimples that made the rest of the school trip over their feet, and made me wanna trip someone — preferably him — down the stairs.
"You're doing this just to annoy me, aren't you?" I shot back, my annoyance sharpening my tone.
"Not everything is to annoy you," he rolled his eyes.
"Can we skip the fucking games? Why are you really here?" I demanded.
He shrugs, looking nothing but confident as he takes a seat right next to me, "I already told you, and I figured this class would be fun since you will be my little tutor."
I narrowed my eyes. The realisation that I'd be stuck with him made my stomach churn. I wanted to scream.
"That's not happening. I refuse to work with you," I insisted.
"Luck is always on my side Mads, we'll end up working together even if you don't like it."
I groan, "Your horrible,"
"Ready for a fun project?" he asked, leaning casually against my seat.
"Fun? You mean a distraction while you charm your way through?" I shot back, annoyed.
Mr. Winters clapped his hands, calling for attention. "Alright, everyone, pair up. Your partners—it'll be whoever you're next to, you will be pairing with them for the rest of the semester."
The room filled with chatter as students paired off.
Em and Jake were already sitting together so they were paired, though Em look kind of uncomfortable being there, but they still teamed up easily. Lia and Cole were lost in their own world, and soon, the only two left were West and me.
I looked around the room and everyone else had chosen a partner.
I looked to my left and nearly cried when I realised what that meant.
"Guess it's Kaleb and Madison, the last pair," Mr. Winters said.

No.
Have I mentioned no?
"Please Mr Winters, I'll literally do anything, I'm ready to do extra work," my voice was desperate, "just please don't make me work with him." Great. Now I was begging in front of my entire class.
Congratulations Madison, you've reached the next level of low.
Mr Winters shrugged, "Your the only two left, I can't do much."
