Just when Brooke had been hoping to leave Klaus and his quest for hybrids soon, they went even further than before, undergoing their longest car journey thus far. Stefan had slept through most of it, but Brooke had been admiring the views from the autoroute, and its landscapes flying past.

She and Klaus had spent most of the previous night drinking away from anyone who took their fancy, so she had more energy now than she had ever since leaving Mystic Falls, which might have accounted for her staying awake the entire car ride.

The views eventually changed from the green fields she was surprised to see, morphing into a large city buzzing with life and excitement.

That was when Klaus finally stopped the car, and the three climbed out. "Welcome back to Chicago, Stefan. And Brooke, welcome for your first visit" said the hybrid, grinning at the skyscrapers before them.

Brooke had always wanted to visit, and she supposed she should at least be grateful she was here, even if it was with Klaus.

"What are we doing here?" asked Stefan

He shrugged. "I know how much you loved it here. Bringing back memories of the good old ripper days"

Stefan shook his head. "I blacked out for most of them. A lot of blood, a lot of partying. The details are all a blur"

A wicked grin came over Klaus's face. "Well, that is a crying shame. The details are what makes it legend... Word was the ripper of Monterrey got lonely, so he escaped to the city for comfort. It was prohibition. Everything was off limits then, which made everything so much fun. The drinking... the music... the women" he sighed happily "Chicago was magical"

"Yeah, well, I'll take your word for it." said Stefan "Like I said, I don't remember most of it"

"Ready to get down to business, then?" asked Klaus

The vampire glared at him, "Why are we still with you? We had our fun, your hybrids failed. I mean, don't you want to move on?"

Klaus shook his head. "We're going to see my favourite witch. If anyone can help us with our hybrid problem, it's her"

He led them away, and Stefan and Brooke shared an exasperated glance before following him reluctantly.

They hoped this whole hybrid thing would be over now, but Klaus was too determined to give up now, which meant they were stuck with him for a little longer than they hoped.

Brooke wanted to have her chance to take in the sights of Chicago, but it was hard when Klaus was not letting them pause for a second until they reached a run down bar called Gloria's.

He pushed open the door, and Klaus glanced at Stefan. "Looks familiar, doesn't it?"

"I can't believe this place is still here" said Stefan

From behind the bar, an old woman looked at the approaching trio in disbelief. "You got to be kidding me"

Klaus smiled. "So a hybrid walks into a bar, says to the bartender..."
