The crowd screams in panic and guards are trying to get me and the guys off-stage. But I can't find Lindsey.
"Lindsey!" I yell, looking for her, but I can't find her. Did she already make it out?
"Sir, you need to leave the stage." A security guard is demanding, but I ignore him.
"Lindsey!" I'm searching the crowd, but there's too many people. I happen to catch a glimpse, before I realize she's still there. I jump down from the stage, then jump over the barrier, running to her. Her head is bleeding.
"Sir—"
Adalynn is pushing him back. "Touch him, and you'll lose your job faster than you can say 'I quit'."
He backs away, but I'm focused on Lindsey. "Lindsey. Lindsey, wake up." I try shaking her, but I can't get her to open her eyes. "Lynn!"
I feel a hand on my shoulder. "Come on. We need to get you two out of here." I nod, hauling Lindsey up into my arms and following Adalynn to the back. By now, police have arrived and are actively searching the building.
I lay Lindsey down on the couch in my dressing room, Theo and Lucas running through the door. "What happened? Is she okay?" Theo asks.
"I don't know." I press two fingers on her neck. Her pulse is steady. "She's alive."
The two blow out a breath. "Did they find who did it?" Lucas asks, looking between the three of us.
"I haven't heard anything." Adalynn answers.
My head falls in my hands and I run them down my face. How did this even happen? Everything was fine when we went on stage. Everything was normal.
Who would try to shoot us?
I hear a pained sigh before turning to look beside me, Lindsey's head rolling to the side as her face contorts into discomfort. She lets out a soft groan and I turn toward her, my hand finding hers. "Lindsey?"
Slowly, her eyes open, and I'm thankful to see them. Even for a common eye color, her eyes have always been my favorite. A deep blue, similar to the ocean.
She licks her lips. "Alex?"
"Yeah, it's me." I smile softly at her.
She looks around the room, confused. "Where am I?"
"My dressing room." I explain to her. She grunts as she pushes herself up into a sitting position. "What happened? When I found you, you were unconscious."
"When the crowd started running for the exits, I was pushed. I lost my footing and knocked my head against the railing." She explains, running her hands through her hair. "Did they find out who it was?"
"Not that we know of." She sighs. I reach forward, brushing her hair behind her ear while staring at the wound on her head. "I don't think you'll need stitches, but you should have an EMT look at it."
"What?" She reaches up to her head, wincing when she presses her temple. She pulls it back, blood on her fingers. "Oh. That."
Someone knocks on the door. A police officer steps in. "Is everyone okay in here?"
We all nod. "Can we get an EMT to look at her head?" I ask. He nods, speaking into the walkie-talkie on his shoulder.
"Did you find out who fired the shot, and if there were any casualties?" Adalynn asks.
"We did, and there was only one that we know of. Only one shot fired." He explains. I sigh. I'll make sure to pay the family. I can't believe one of my fans is dead, because they went to my concert.
No more concerts for me for a little while.
An EMT steps into the room and he's guided over to Lindsey, where he checks her eyesight and makes sure she doesn't have a concussion.
"Who did it?" I ask, looking back at the officer.
"We ran her through the system and found her name is Margaret Moreno—"
The four of us snap our heads to him. "Maggie?"
"You know her?" He asks, confused.
"Yeah. I used to date her back in high school." I explain.
"Yeah, and she made my life a living hell." Lindsey scowls.
"But why would she try to kill us? We haven't talked to her in years." Lucas states.
Theo shrugs. "Maybe she's mad Alex broke up with her."
The EMT adds two small strips to Lindsey's wound before leaving. Lindsey adjusts, placing her feet on the floor. "She wasn't after you three. She was after me."
We all turn to her. "What?"
"How do you know she was after you?" I narrow my eyes.
She sighs. "She's the one who's been trying to kill me. They started off as death threats, and I didn't think she'd do anything, so I ignored them."
"So when I asked you if you had gotten anything, you lied to me? Twice?" I stare at her with my brows raised. She lied to me. Twice.
"What, did you expect me to just reveal everything? I thought she was bluffing!"
"Now look what's happened! She almost drowned you, she tried to drop a light on you, and now she's tried to shoot you! Who knows what's next." I shake my head.
"You think me hiding this is bad when you haven't exactly been honest either. You won't even tell me why you need a lawyer, and my dad at that!" She yells.
I sigh before I'm yelling back, "Because I'm being charged with assault."
That shuts her up.
"There, you happy? I told you." I glare. "I was framed for assaulting a man in a club, and he's trying to sue me. That's why I need a lawyer."
"Was it really that hard to tell me?"
"Is it really that hard to tell me why you left?" I shoot back at her. Immediately, she slumps. For a second, I almost think she's going to tell me, but she keeps her mouth shut and I shake my head, turning away.
The officer clears his throat. "You say you've been getting death threats? What kind?"
She shrugs. "Just the usual threat. Mostly in the form of paper."
"How long have these been going on?"
"End of November, early December."
"Have you gotten anything else?"
"Well, she's hacked into my work's security, so..."
"Seriously, Lindsey?" I look at her in disbelief. All of this has been happening behind my back.
Even when I asked her, she refused to tell me. Now the reaction to the mail she got when we went on that date makes sense.
"Adalynn, I want to increase our security. Add however many more bodyguards you feel are needed and talk to Rhys Croyso about upping his own security." I instruct her. She nods, walking to the door.
"Did you catch her? Maggie?" Theo asks, arms crossed against his chest.
The officer sighs. "We did, but she escaped custody. We have an APB out for her right now."
Lindsey slumps back in her seat. "Great."
"You four should head on home. I'll have a few police follow, just in case she shows up." He tells.
We nod, standing up and grabbing our things before making our way to the limo.
