𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐒𝐄𝐘
For the past five years, I've managed to avoid him. I've managed to forget about him and move on from him. Mostly. Alex Lancaster and I have history, but nothing will ever change between us.
At least until he shows up at my dad's work...

The morning sun blinds me, waking me from my sleep. I sigh, flipping over onto my back and rubbing my face. I turn over, reaching for Alex to curl into him, but his side of the bed is cold.
Opening my eyes, I find my bed empty, aside from me. I push myself up. Maybe he's downstairs.
I pull off my covers and get dressed before walking downstairs. But he's not there.
Confused, I walk back upstairs to find my phone. Pulling up his contact, I message him.
ME: Where are you?
I stare at my phone for a few minutes, but he doesn't answer. Weird. With a resigned sigh, I shut off my phone and get ready for work before I'm late.
But throughout the day, I continuously check my phone, hoping for a message or a call from him. This is weird. Normally Alex is quick to respond.
Maybe he's just busy.
When my break rolls around, I decide to call him. But it goes straight to voicemail. Which means his phone is either dead or he shut it off. I'm hoping it's not the latter.
"Hey, Alex, I know you're probably busy with something, but can you please call me back? I'm worried. You never leave me on delivered like this." Hanging up, I head back inside, feeling...disappointed. And scared.
I hope he's not doing this because I said I loved him. No, that can't be it. He said it back. You two made love for Christ's sake.
I stop by Sierra's desk, catching her attention immediately. "Hey."
"Hey." She smiles at me. "How are you and Alex? You've checked your phone more times than I can count."
"I'm not sure anymore." I blow out a breath. "He's left me on delivered since this morning and when I tried calling him, it went straight to voicemail." I admit. And it's scaring me.
"Well, maybe he's just busy." She offers.
"Yeah. Maybe." I murmur.
If he were busy, then he'd be busy all day. What could possibly take him all day to respond to me?
"Well, I'll let you get back to work." I say, and she nods, returning to typing on her keyboard. I walk to my desk, finding a cup of coffee on top. I didn't have a coffee on my desk before I left, did I? I turn to Mandy. "Who put this coffee on my desk?"
"Oh, one of the new interns got us all coffees." She informs me with a smile.
"Didn't know we had a new intern." I murmur.
"Yeah, I didn't either. But she was nice." Then she returns to typing on her computer.
I shrug, sitting down and working on my paperwork. I press print on one of the documents, taking a sip of the coffee I was given. Well, more like taking a large drink of it. Maybe coffee will help me focus on work.
Forget Alex for right now. At least until I get off work.
I start to feel a little weird, but brush it off as nerves. Standing up, I begin to make my way to the printer. "I'm gonna run down to the printer and then I'll have the papers you need." I announce to Naomi as I pass.
"All good." She smiles at me.
But with each step, my feet feel heavier. My vision begins to swim and I feel unsteady on my feet. I can hear my breath in my ears as well as the blood coursing through my body.
I turn back to Naomi as I feel my body swaying. "Hey, Naomi?" I blurrily see her turn to me. "I don't feel so—" I don't finish as my body collapses.
"Lindsey?" I hit the floor. "LINDSEY!"
I can't see straight. I don't even think I can keep my eyes open. Darkness surrounds me as I hear someone yelling. I think it's Naomi.
There are hands on me, trying to get me to open my eyes. I can't.
"Someone call nine-one-one!" A voice yells. It sounds so close yet so far.
There's another voice, more hands. I feel myself being elevated, but I can't open my eyes to see who or what is happening to me.
The voices are slowly drowned out before I'm slipping out of consciousness.
