Rehan's. P.O.V.
Groaning awake, I hold onto my head feeling completely hungover from last night. . .Alizeh and I had the best time together, we ate MacDonalds, made out, drank alittle, and then continued to do other R-rated activities that were not to be disclosed. I missed feeling this carefree, and worry-free, the past two weeks were torture for me, every day it was something that royally pissed me off, or completely stressed the fuck out of me. I look down to see Liza peacefully sleeping on my chest, I turn towards the end table where my phone is, to check the time but as soon as I hit the power button, four missed calls from Mahi come across. What the hell? I only ignored one. of her calls, why didnt I hear the other three? I gently maneuver Liza off my body throw my legs to the side of the bed, and call her back but it goes to voicemail. "Hey it's Mahi, leave a message please."
Holding my head, I try calling her one more time but once again I am met with, "Hey it's Mahi, leave a message please."
Why did she call me so much, and why didn't I hear it? Had I really drunk so much last night or was I that pre-occupied? Fuck, I knew I shouldn't have left her alone the first night, but it had been so long since I had been with Alizeh, alone, I couldn't choose her. Standing up I quickly put my pants, and shirt on, spraying some cologne on so Mahi doesnt catch the scent of alcohol on me. I kiss Alizeh's forehead, gently rubbing her cheek, "Liza," I whisper trying. to wake her up, but she is sound asleep not wanting to bother her anymore. I left a note on her phone with a sticky note, letting her know I left, and would see her later.
Using a mouth wash I text Azlaan to pick me up from her apartment. I try calling Mahi again, hoping to get through to her, but this time she declines the call. Irritated by her behaviour I text her. 'Answer the phone,'
No less than five minutes later Azlaan arrives with his car, rolling his window down he says, "Coffee?"
"Please," I grumble getting into his car, spamming Mahi's phone with messages. "You dropped. Mahi off at my apartment right?"
"Yeah, I dropped her bags off and everything." He answered, before looking over at me, "Why?"
"Nothing," I sigh, "Just she tried calling me last night, and I ignored it, but now when I woke up there were more missed. calls. from her, and now when I am trying to call her, she isnt answering, so I have no idea what she wanted, or why she was calling."
Azlaan shrugged, "Probably pissed,"
"This was the plan Azlaan." I said sharply, "We get married, and then come to New York and live separate lives. Mahi knows this."
"Dude," He said turning right towards my apartment complex, "This is a new city, new people, new everything. . . I am sure she was nervous about coming here in the first place and then you just disappeared on the first day like that, I am sure she has some anger against you. Even if this was the plan you two discussed."
He was right, "Just get me home," I breathed out as we pulled into the parking lot, "Thank you," I said, "Get to work, I'll be there as soon as I get sorted with Mahi."
"Got it." He replied before driving off as I headed inside the complex.
"Good Morning Frank," I greeted our doormen,
"Morning Sir," He responded, I was about to pass by him but he stopped me, "Sir, your family friend has left a message for you with me."
I furrow my eyebrows at him, "Family friend?"
"Mahi, Sir" Frank cleared his message, and he held out a piece of paper. I walked. over. to him, and grabbed it, thanking him.
Since you do not like to answer my phone or messages I thought a note would do justice to communicate with you. I called New York University this morning and booked an appointment with an advisor. I had no idea when you would come back, so I called Nehmat and asked her to take me to the appointment, saying that you had already gone to work because you were behind due to the wedding. If Amma calls and asks, last night you went to bed early BECAUSE you had to get to work early, that is our story.
P.S. I know we agreed to not interfere in each other's lives, but I think. answering each other's phone calls should be mandatory, for saftey. reasons and for family reasons. . . Just a thought.
I could hear the sarcasm and her attitude through the note she had provided for me. I look up at Frank, "Thank you," I say, before heading up to our apartment.
. . .
Quickly tying my tie, I fixed my hair, and as I was getting ready to leave I heard the doorknob move for alittle while before revealing Nehmat and Mahi as they walked through the door. I turned to face them holding a cup of coffee in my hands, "Morning girls," I said, "Or more like afternoon," I corrected myself as Mahi looked at me with a bored expression and Tejo looked at me suspiciously.
"Afternoon," Tejo said, "How are you back so soon Jiju?"
Mahi rolled her eyes throwing her purse on the side table beside the door along with her keys, "I came for lunch," I said coming up with an excuse, "Your best friend here promised me a homemade lunch today, but she, herself was missing from our home."
"Yeah, I got late at the appointment with the advisor." Mahi replied, "Baba almost royally screwed me over with the dorm situation, they almost canceled my admission. If I hadn't shown up today or made contact with them today they would have given my spot to someone else."
"Well, it is good that you went there today," I say thankfully that her opportunity was not taken away. "When do your classes start then?"
Mahi poured herself a cup of coffee and Tejo, "In two days since I arrived alittle the classes start earlier. I still have to buy my class textbooks and figure out which building they are in. I have so much to do." She obviously was beginning to get overwhelmed. I thought about canceling my day in the office but I had a bunch of stuff to catch up. Tejo watched me carefully as if she was waiting for me to offer to take her but even if I wanted to I really couldn't. I should have gone to the office yesterday after having a snack with Liza but I got too caught up with her that I didn't even show my face there.
"Tejo do you have time today?" She asked her.
Nehmat looked over at her finally looking away from me "Yeah I do but shouldn't Rehan be doing all this?"
"I would." I cut in, "I have a lot of work, and like I said I only came back home for lunch."
"And what are you for?" Mahi said "Back in Huntsville you promised me you would help me get all set up. Why are you backing out now?"
Nehmat looked hesitant for a few minutes but nevertheless gave in. "I'll help you get ready for your classes."
Breathing out in relief I watched as she brushed past me to go to the bathroom before the two left the apartment again. Mahi looked over at me, "Do you know how to answer your phone?" She asked me bluntly, "I called you like five times yesterday Rehan."
"Let's not do this right now." I did not want to get caught by her friend. "When we both come home at night we'll talk about it."
"Right as if you will come back tonight." She snapped
"Mahi," I say firmly but quickly change my tone as Tejo walks out again. "Alright, I am going to head out." I leaned over and kissed her cheek knowing she would dodge the kiss I grabbed her neck to keep her in place. "See you tonight."
Mahi gave me a pointed look as she said bye, handing me my briefcase that was already packed with necessities. I needed to make it up to her in some way, but how...the less angrier she was the easier it was to work with her. But what to do to ease the anger? What to do...
