Sajal's P.O.V. (Mahinoor's Mother)

Staring down at my daughter's beautiful eyes, I lost myself in them, I could not believe that after years of trying I was holding my baby. Ahad tearfully looked down at her as well, "Iska naam kya rakhe?" (What should we name her?)

Ahad breathed out heavily, "Mahinoor,"  That was a gorgeous name, meaning moonlight, the light in our lives.

"My Mahi," I whispered back kissing her forehead gently,

There was a small knock on the door, Ahad lifted away from me after I had appropriately covered myself, quickly walking over to the door he was met with cheers, of the two people we had to call family here in Huntsville, Muskoka, Ontario far from Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Zaid and Kinza rushed inside with their son, Rehan. "Show me!" Kinza said excitedly as Ahad was being congratulated by Zaid.

"Hai Allah," (Oh My God) Kinza squealed looking down at her, as she snuggled into my embrace, "Kitni pyaari hai! Rehan, come look." (She is so cute! Rehan, come look)

Smiling I gently waved him over, Rehan slowly walked over, and a soft smile took over his face. "She is so cute," His light dimples begin to show, "Like a doll."

Kinza giggled, "I have been waiting for this day, I wanted our kids to play and grow up with each other, but now since our little princess is here, I have a proposition."

Ahad, Zaid, and I looked at her confused, "What proposition?"

"Remember when we used to work together in the factory?" She questioned,

"Yeah?"

"Do you remember our promise?" Her eyes twinkled in the hospital lights.

"Will you take my son as your beautiful daughter's husband in the future?"

Rehan looked down at Mahinoor, "Husband? Amma she is  a baby,"

Ahad chuckled grabbing onto his shoulders, panic filled my body, I just got my baby girl, how could I already promise her to someone else? "Not now Raaz, maybe in the future. What do you think Sajal? She will stay in the family, won't go far from us?"

"Abhi abhi to humhare paas ayi hain," (We just got her) I whispered, Kinza's smile vanished, and the room filled with silence. "Ankhein bhi nahi kohli, how can I just plan to give her away already?" (She hasn't even opened her eyes, how can I just plan to give her away already?)

"You don't trust us?" Zaid asked,

My eyes dropped to gaze at Mahinoor, "I trust you all,"

"Phir?"(Then?) Ahad said, I could hear the firmness in his voice. He didn't like my answer, but after all the years of longing for a child, and now finally able to hold her, I didnt. want to think about having to give her to someone one day, I couldn't bear it the thought.

"Sajal Khala," Rehan said holding onto my hand tightly, "I promise that in the future. I will always protect and take of Mahinoor. I promise I will never let her cry, or worry, or feel alone. So don't worry, I promise to keep my promise."

Everyone was looking at him shocked, at the age of ten, Rehan understood my heart more than the three other adults here. Tears blurred my vision, as I leaned down and kissed his forehead. "Jo aap sab nahi samaj paye, Rehan samaj ga." (What you all could not understand, he understood.) I said quietly, "It is not about trust Zaid Bhaiya, it is about finally being able to be a mother, and being asked to hand that life off to another in a matter of seconds."

Kinza's face filled with shame, "Sorry Sajal, sometimes. I get overly excited."

Ahad came to stand next to me, gently caressing my shoulder, "I am sorry as well," He whispered. "Out of everyone, I should have understood."

Breathing out heavily I got Rehan to sit on the bed infront of me, and gently handed him Mahinoor, "I believe in you to keep your promises, Rehan," I said smiling at him, "So when you two get alittle older, always remember you were the first one to hold her other than me. Mahinoor is yours."

Rehan smiled as Mahinoor opened her eyes as she stirred and awoke from the exchange of embraces, "And I'm hers," He confirmed.

Of course, they were children, and of course, things were going to change, but for us, this was a promise. . a promise that would be carried out because these two are destined for one another.
