"Oh my gosh it's been too long" Vernon hugged his sister tightly, they just met at the airport
"Yeah" Sophia whispered on his shoulder "It's been almost a year?"
"Yeah" Vernon hugged her even tighter "It's so good to see you Soph"
"Same here bro" she said softly, burying her head into her brother's shoulder. At the time, it didn't feel weird or out of the ordinary ... just two siblings getting together after a long time but as days went by, Vernon was a bit worried.
"Is she okay?" He asked his mother, Sophia came back from school and immediately run to her room, she didn't want to face anyone for some reason
"Some days she likes to hide in her room" his mother shrugged "She's a teenager I don't ask much" he chuckled and Vernon nodded but wanted to ask if his sister was maybe going through something?
He shook it off But that didn't last
It was a very cold night outside and pretty late at night. Vernon woke up to get some water when he noticed their balcony window open. Curious, he got closer to see who left it open. He looked outside and there she was, Sophia was sitting on the floor, her knees pressed against her chest and head resting on them.
She looked up and jolted "Sorry" Vernon apologized immediately "I didn't mean to scare you I just saw the window open and the lights on"
Sophia breathed out relived "It's okay" she muttered softly "I'm fine ... why are you up so late?" She asked and Vernon took another step towards her
"Why are YoU up?"
She chuckled looking away and soon her head fell right back on her knees. Vernon slid down and sat next to her scanning her face "Shophia is everything okay? You know you can talk to me right?"
He sounded soft and concerned She smiled "Yes I know"
"Then, will you tell me what's wrong?"
There was an awkward silence there, she was hesitant but Vernon's reassuring look didn't leave her
"Why did you have to leave for so long?" She sounded all broken and shaken up "You just left me here to pick up the pieces"
Vernon frowned "What? What pieces?" He asked rather puzzled while Sophia didn't look surprised at all, she knew that her brother didn't know anything in the first place
"Sophia I'm so sorry ... I have no clue what are you talking about?"
"I know" She muttered sounding sad and powerless, she looked back at her brother
"It's just ... I missed around so much that's"
Vernon frowned he leaned forward to take his sister into a hug. She broke down almost immediately wrapping her arms around his shoulders and sobbed for a long time. Vernon was clueless, he held her tightly in his arms and patted her back and hair gently "Sophy please" he pleaded feeling guilty and overwhelmed seeing his sister's tears uncontrollably falling off her cheeks "Tell me what's wrong"
She gasped for air not letting go of Vernon's shirt, she tried to breathe in enough air to start talking but it was too much. They sat there for a while trying to work things out.
She said few things, Vernon had no idea
His parents weren't doing very well ... fighting all the time and she's getting stuck in between. They pretend that everything is so perfect when their precious son is home.
At school, everybody avoided her calling her a "Liar" there's no way she's the sister of a famous Kpop idol. "Go back to Korea" they said and pointed fingers at her whenever she passed by. She was pretty ... maybe too pretty and every girl in school was jealous. She was smart, always aced her exams and passed with flying colors and they simply bullied her for who she was.
"Just keep on living in your brother's shadow ... that if he's really your brother, there's no way he's related to you"
They idolized him But marginalized her Even his parents
And he had no idea
He hugged her tight and promised that everything will be okay from now on. He watched her go to sleep with tears still flowing down her cheeks and felt his heart clench. While he was living his dream, his sister was living a nightmare. He looked around and everything suddenly didn't matter anymore, he wished he was around more, he wished he was there for his sister. He blamed himself but promised himself that he'd fix this as soon as possible. As long as he's here now, his entire energy will be focused into making sure that Sophia wasn't caught up into his life or his parent's problems and he didn't care how much it will cost him.
