In That Moment

A few years have past and Noel and Bernard have settled down into their new lives, currently living on the banks of New York in a small hotel room. Christmas in New York is unlike any other. The busy streets are filled with lights and decorations, and the chilly air is filled with the smell of roasted chestnuts, but is nothing like home at the North Pole.

As the pair walk through the busy streets, they are amazed by the hustle and bustle of the city. People rush around them, carrying shopping bags and talking on their phones. Bernard nudges Noel as he whispers, 'Can you believe this is how humans live? It's so different from our quiet and peaceful life in the North Pole.'

‘You do realise this was my life before you?’ Noel chuckles, embracing her arm around him as they cross the street.

‘Yes but Illinois was much less chaotic than this.’ Bernard leans into her side, the beret on his head adjusting slightly. ‘I hate having to hide my ears.’ Noel says, sadly, readjusting the woolly hat on her head.

‘I know you do but we have too. It’s under the Kribble Krabble code.’

‘Yes but when was the last time you followed that?’ Noel turns to him, now safely on the sidewalk. ‘I remember it saying that I wasn’t allowed to come with you..’

‘Ok, ok’ Bernard interrupts, pulling her closer to his chest. ‘But this is different. If anyone finds out or if the elf law finds out, we’re done for.’

‘B,’ Noel smiles, brushing a fall away strand of curly hair from his face, ‘We’re going to be ok. You are fully up to date with your research and we only have a year left till we can go back.’ She smiles again, pulling him in for a delicate peck on the lips. ‘It’s all going to be ok.’

‘I know it is, Snowflake, but I just have this weird feeling that something is going wrong back at the Pole.’

‘I’m sure all is well. Charlie hasn’t updated me with anything bad for a good few months which means,’ She pauses, waiting for him to finish the sentence with her. ‘All is well.’ The couple finish together, tying it off with a quick kiss.

‘And just maybe if you are less panicky,’ Noel begins, ‘Something may be waiting for you back at our room.’ She smirks, flirtatiously, biting her bottom lip.

‘Oh really,’ Bernard chuckles, pulling her closer by her waist, his hands securely on her lower back. The pair chuckle onto one another's lips, earning a few disgusted looks from pass byers.

'They must think we're some giddy teenagers.' Noel chuckles, looking around at them.

‘Maybe we should get out of here?’ Bernard asks, pulling back slightly. ‘You think so.’ Noel giggles.

‘I know so.’

Pulling apart from one another, Noel hails down a yellow taxi, a new mode of transportation for Bernard, as he, as well as them both, were used to travelling by sleigh back home at the Pole. As they zoom through the city, they take in all the sights and sounds, making mental notes to bring back as research for the Kribble Krabble book.

‘Why again are we in a taxi?’ Bernard queries, turning his head to her slightly. ‘We could’ve just walked?’

Noel chuckles once again, leaning closer to her partner, ‘Because, you need the experience for your research,’ He nods in agreement, ‘I am also very lazy,’ He once again nods in agreement, ‘and it gets us home quicker.’ She whispers the last bit into his covered ears, sparing the driver from listening.

Bernard's glittering cheeks grow red as he quickly turns to her fully. ‘Snowflake!’ He gasps, pulling her slightly closer. ‘We could just teleport.’
