Roan slammed the door to their small bedroom, rattling the glassware and ornaments on the walls. Rage radiated off him like a furnace. Astrid was already waiting for the emotional outburst as soon as they left the throne room.
"What the hell are you thinking?!" He spat, pacing the length of the room, "You can't fight in the conclave!"
"Give me one reason why." Something inside her didn't allow her to reach that level of anger. Instead, she sat nonchalantly in the chair across from him, one ankle across another while her arm dangled casually over the arm rests.
Roan let loose a pent up breath, unable to look towards Astrid, "There are things you just don't know."
"Like what?" He didn't answer, so she pushed again, "Oh for the Gods sake Roan, I thought we were through with the secrets so just-"
"There was a reason Abby wasn't able to use your blood, Astrid," His voice grew quiet, laced with regret, but she still waited for him to continue, "She said she didn't know if it would work because she didn't know if you were human."
Panic overcame Astrid, rooting deep into her bones. She shot up from her seat, marching to meet him in the center of the room, "What do you mean she said 'If I was human?' What the fuck does that even mean?"
"I don't know." The world seemed to stop. Not just for Astrid, but for Roan, who felt the drastic change in his wife's aura, "All Abby said when she took your blood was she hoped it would be compatible with a human host."
Fury encased her like a burning pyre. Whatever calm demeanor lied within her soul just a few moments ago was gone now. She'd burn down this entire building, the whole damned city with that rage filled betrayal that pulsed against her veins. Gentle hands reached for her as an attempt to calm the billowing flames in her mind. She took a steadying breath, a desperate attempt to calm the sea of emotions.
"Astrid, I couldn't keep this a secret from you." There was a deep sadness in his voice, "And you're about to fight for a bunker to save the rest of humanity tomorrow. I couldn't-"
Her brows creased together as she ripped her hand from Roan's, "Is that what this is about? You think by dropping some bomb about my life that I'll back away from the conclave? Well guess what, I've been dealing with shit like this my entire life, Roan."
He spun to face his back to her, throwing his hands up in defeat, "Am I a criminal for not wanting my wife to die?" When he heard Astrid's scoff, he whirled back to face her, jabbing a finger into her shoulder, "I have watched you die nearly a hundred times already. I'd rather you hate me than watch your death."
"You cannot stop this." She growled, "So, you can either be a coward and hide during the conclave. Or you can watch me fight and win."
"And if you lose?" He took a small step to close the gap between them, towering over her, "If you lose, and I have to watch the woman I love die... There won't be a King to rule Azgeda." His fingertips brushed the stray hairs from her face before he cradled her face gently.
"If you die, so will I. Everything I do, I want to do it with you. Our burdens are shared now, including death. You have forever changed me. You are the sole reason I continue to fight every morning. I do not care what heavens created you, or what secrets lie in your past. I just know I cannot be in a world where you do not exist, Astrid."
Astrid felt like the wind had snatched her soul. Whatever strands tethered her to this world, this world she did not belong to snapped and frayed.
All except one.
The one strand, strongest of all, that traced soft, comforting circles on her shoulders. The voice that whispered to her in the night when nightmares morphed into reality. The body whose warmth she constantly craved. Their touch ignited her passion and fire when all seemed lost.
