Astrid's dreams began coming more and more frequently. At first, it was once every month or so. Now, it was almost weekly. It was always the same dream. Always the same vividness. Just on constant repeat.
It felt like some form of torture. There was nothing she could do besides spend the rest of her nights contemplating the meaning of it all. Some nights she would skip sleep entirely and just stare at the ceiling. Sorting through the depth of her mind for any sort of information on what happened. And when Roan was snoring softly beside her, she'd slip out the sheets and dive into the contents of the journal.
She was just as successful as the day she found it. The diagrams, the language, it all meant nothing to her. Still, she tried relentlessly until either morning broke, or exhaustion dragged her to sleep.
She had hidden her ailment well enough where she no longer plagued Roan with worry. Each time she woke drenched in sweat, she merely just showered and walked the halls of the Ring until the rest of their group rose. Each time he woke her on the couch, she usually threw some poor excuse followed by a quick change of subject.
The cryosleep pod was nearly functional at that point. While the mechanics to induce a person into cryosleep were shot, they assembled miscellaneous components to realign the basic functions of it. Just in case the hydrazine problem never resolved, and they needed somebody to return to Earth. A rare circumstance, but if they weren't able to solve the fuel issue in a year and a half, they wanted a backup plan.
Despite being over halfway through with their sentence on the Ring, it truly felt like a lifetime. Three and a half years. Each day seemed to creep by, but in retrospect, somedays it didn't truly feel like three and half years. Routines helped, but so did Astrid's friends.
Family.
They were Astrid's family at this point.
Yet, she still couldn't bring herself to tell them about the dreams. They had enough to worry about. Murphy was rebelling. Communications to the ground were still shot. Last week, they had to result to half rations due to a blight in one of the algae tanks. With everything going on, Astrid's dreams were the least of their worries.
"Astrid? Astrid?" A hand waved in front of her face, snapping her attention back to the conversion. Bellamy, Roan, Echo and Raven swapped a concerned glance as Astrid blinked a few times.
"Sorry." She mumbled. What were they just talking about? Oh right, the hydrazine problem.
"You okay?" Roan asked as he squeezed her shoulder.
"Just couldn't sleep."
"Again?" Raven asked. It was more often than not that Raven was the first person Astrid greeted in the mornings after those sleepless nights. A trait they shared. While Astrid dreamed about her past life, Raven was plagued with the memories of ALIE. Turns out, dying didn't stop ALIE from haunting her dreams.
"It's nothing." She shrugged it off nonchalantly, "Try dealing with Roan's snoring for four years and you tell me how you sleep."
"No thanks." Raven chuckled, "I hear it through the other side of the wall. That's enough for me."
"It's not that bad-"
"Yes, it is." Everybody in the group said synchronously before Raven added, "If I had to sleep next to that monstrosity every night, there would be one less person on this ship. Hell, might even cook you up just to get away from Monty's algae."
He grumbled under his breath while the rest of the group roared with laughter. Raven and Astrid doubled over, clutching one another while their stomach tensed with the surge of giggles.
