The sound of lapping waves awoke Astrid from her deep sleep. Salt tickled her nose. Her body swaying gently with the rolling waves. For a moment, she felt she was dreaming. In a world covered with oceans, cerulean and blue that covered every part of the planet. It was peaceful, serene, and calm. A calmness Astrid hadn't felt in a long, long time.
But when she felt the soreness pulsate in her cheek, and the murmured voices growing clearer, she realized it was quite the opposite. Blinding sunlight pierced her eyes as she cracked them open, blinking a few times to adjust to the light. A soft groan escaped her lips as she tried to move. What bright light cascaded upon her was now interrupted by two shadows.
"Did you fucking punch me?" Her voice cracked, but everybody else roared in laughter. Not just Clarke and Roan, but somebody she did not know as well, who Astrid was not expecting. Feeling the familiar calloused hands of her husband, she used them to posture herself up along the bench.
Astrid took in her surroundings between a few steadying blinks. Water spread for miles until it rolled over the horizon. Not bright and glittering like she expected, but dark and lifeless. Something about it seemed...off.
"Will somebody care to explain where we are?" Astrid rolled her head side to side in an attempt to rid of the soreness along it. There was a slight stiffness that lingered in her muscles, specifically her back. Her bleary eyes shifted from Roan, to Clarke, and then the mysterious person, waiting for an explanation.
It was Clarke who spoke first, "We are going to Becca's island. My mom's there making the Night Blood serum. It's...." There was disappointment laced in Clarke's words, "Ilian destroyed the Ark. Whatever chance we have for survival lies in Luna and her blood."
Astrid cursed under her breath before she slid her eyes to Roan, "And the war?"
"The only war that matters is us against the death wave." It was Roan who answered this time. Astrid nodded slowly, feeling her muscles strain against the movement even as she turned her head.
She wrapped her arms around herself, realizing she was still in that damned nightgown and jacket. If she had known she would be following Octavia into the woods, or going out on the open ocean, she would have prepared a bit better. Roan noticed the tiny shivers, and immediately brought his wife closer to him. She sunk into the warmth; the furs on his body tickling her bare arms. Clarke gave them a small, bittersweet smile before Astrid looked towards the verdant trees closing in.
"You know," Astrid whirled her head to the unknown voice, "John's told me a lot about you, Snowflake. I just didn't expect you to look like shit."
"Hey!" Roan barked out, but Astrid raised a hand for him to shut it.
Astrid nearly choked, either from knowing Murphy was alive or the pure gut on this woman. Hell, it had been months since she heard that nickname. Not the typical regal ones looming over her head. It brought a slight comfort to Astrid. A tinge of normalcy.
"I've had a shitty few days." Astrid shrugged it off before changing the topic, "So John Murphy's still alive somehow?" The woman nodded, "All this time, I thought he would've died in the forest."
"He would have if it wasn't for me." They both chuckled. Astrid looked back on the waves, seeing they were nearing the shore.
"What's your name?"
"Emori." Astrid repeated the name once, silently, just to remember the name.
The fishing boat collided with the bank, and the four of them quickly hopped out. With Clarke and Emori leading the way, Roan escorted Astrid by her lower back. She didn't bother to pick up the tattered gown through the mud and leaves. She was still that tired. He could feel her sluggish moves and fatigue just from that small touch. Like she was unknowingly sucking the energy out of him.
