Death seemed like an old friend to Astrid. Always in a gentle waltz to music that never stopped. Just slowed. They would dance around and around, sometimes with Death leading her to the end. Other times, she was the one who guided them to the melody.
No matter what day, what year, or what planet, Death lingered just a few steps behind, waiting for that grand finale before the curtains closed.
A shiver traveled down Astrid's spine as her senses slowly synapses awake again. 10 years in cryo, and to her shock, everything went just as planned. Whatever memories that stored themselves in her mind refused to resurface, but she didn't lose any either. Just as Clarke said — just like waking up the next morning.
As the metal table rolled out from its storage, Astrid felt her body readjust in its skin again. First, the smell of hythylodium, rubber, and metal.
Then, the cool metal table pressing against her bare skin, growing warming as the ice dethawed around the edges.
Third, the dry taste in her mouth.
Finally, her eyelids fluttered open as she was greeted by the echo of a familiar voice.
"Hey, Twisted Sister." Raven gave her an anticipatory grin as she assisted Astrid to the edge of the table, "How are you feeling?"
Astrid groaned as she rolled her shoulders back, adjusting the sore muscles along her spine. "Like shit." She looked around the endless stretch of beds, seeing a fair share of pods already open. Including Roan's.
"Raven, where is everybody?" Astrid pushed off the bed to investigate the rest of the ship when a wave of vertigo sent her tumbling into Raven.
"Hey, cool it, would you?" She scolded as she helped steady Astrid, setting her on the bed again, "Everybody is okay. Kinda. Roan just asked if we kept you asleep for a little while longer."
"Kinda? Wait, what? Why?"
"Said he needed some time to recover before the chaos continued. Shitty thing is, the chaos is continuing."
"Must be pretty bad if you're willing to wake the official oldest terrorist of the century and her unborn child."
"Don't worry, my skills are still sharp."
"I wouldn't doubt it." Astrid teased before returning to her ready self, "So, what's the situation?"
"We've been hijacked, 4 people in neoprene suits with breathing regulators."
"Weapons?" Diyoza questioned as she stretched from her bed.
"They're using gas grenades to move our people to the mess hall," Raven sighed in distress, "but, yeah, they have weapons."
"If they're keeping us in the mess hall, that means they control the bridge." Diyoza whipped her head to the monitor, "It also means they know you just woke us up."
"Sounds like we better get moving." Astrid massaging her neck as she stood successfully from the bed. That's when Raven grabbed her hand.
"Exactly. We have to move now."
Diyoza, still unmoving, just looked at the women and said, "I have a better idea."
Astrid and Raven exchanged a worrisome glance before Diyoza continued, "Get back in your bed. Raven, take that spare one across from me. I'll take out the guards. Wait till the gas passes to come out."
"What if they go to Astrid?"
"I hope you can hold your breath, princess." Diyoza shrugged casually before sliding back in her bed.
