Astrid had managed to sit through the excruciating pain long enough for Bellamy and Gabriel to explain everything that had happened; both in Sanctum, and at the 'Anomaly' as Gabriel called it. Even after that, she still had to explain everything about her life, her missing past, and her strange connection to the stone to stranger.
"So... it just called you?" He still couldn't wrap his head around the idea.
"Yup." She popped the 'p' in annoyance, "Just like I said the last dozen times. I went beyond the radiation shield, I saw the flash of green, and ever since then, I've just been... drawn to the stone."
"Drawn how?" Astrid groaned again, from both the radiating pain in her arm and his never ending questions. At this rate, she would be answering his questions till sundown.
"I don't know." She threw her hands in the air, "It was some instinctive feeling. I just started walking, but it got to a point where my body was reacting on its own. Not like I could do much about it anyways with the..." She cut her words short, but it was already too late. The three males around her mimicked a similar expression of curiosity and concern.
She caved again, relinquishing what little she could remember, "I couldn't think. My mind was being overridden by all the memories of my past, like a scratched record. Over and over and over again, playing the seldom memories I have. I couldn't fight my sanity and control of my body at once, so I renounced control to both."
"And that's when you activated the Anomaly." Gabriel added to her dismay.
"Like I said, I had no control over that either." She sighed, "It's like the stone wanted me to come there. It wanted me to open whatever was on the other side. It wasn't just some thought implanted in my head. It was a physiological force my body had no defenses against."
Gabriel crouched down to Astrid's level as she sat on the bed, looking over her swirling tattoos. Still slithering across her skill, but less active than it was before, "You never told me how you got these."
"Neither do we." Bellamy chimed in, "One day, on the Ring, she went missing. And the next, we find her with those."
There was that tone again. The subtle disgust of his tone that made Astrid feel more like a foreign enemy than family. This time, Bellamy had recognized how his words damped Astrid's spirit and placed a reaffirming hand along her shoulder. Apologies were deep in those chestnut eyes.
Roan picked up where he left off, "It started a couple years ago, when we were on the Ring. She started finding pieces to her past. More and more, she would get into this catatonic state, mumbling things nobody could understand. Then, she was just... gone. Mentally, but not physically. That's why we sent her to Earth."
"What kind of pieces are we talking about?" Astrid slid her eyes to Roan at Gabriel's question. She nodded once towards him, and despite his disapproving stare, he slipped the leather bound book from his waistband and threw it before Gabriel.
"Good luck." He mumbled with a scowl as Gabriel began flipping through the pages. Those big brown eyes just got bigger, and bigger, and bigger, until the book nearly fumbled out of his fingers. His throat bobbed with a loud gulp as he cautiously looked towards Astrid.
"This is..." It seemed he didn't want to put the thought into existence, but he continued to do so anyway, "Astrid, your language... it's the same runes on the Anomaly."
The world went still around the small group. Astrid turned her shaky eyes to Roan, to Bellamy, and finally to Gabriel, who still refused to meet her glance. Instead, he shifted between her bodyguards and reached for her arm. Even the gentle touch had sent scorching fire across her skin.
