"Are you sure you want to do this?" Holkom asked Astrid as she tightened her sword to her hip, "I will fight for you. Now and always, my Queen."
War was upon them. One last fight to end them all. A battle to end all battles, hopefully for the next five years. Being surrounded by the best of the best, Astrid had a gut feeling that this conclave would be the ultimate test of her strength and durability.
"I have already taken the sigil." She gave a slight smile to him before placing her hand on his shoulder, "But there is something I need you to do."
"Anything."
"If I die, which I won't," she emphasized heavily, "I want you to become Roan's second. Down to his final breath. Do you understand me?"
Holkom nodded firmly just before the King stepped into the training arena. On cue, Holkom slipped away to join the crowd, giving them privacy in what could be their final moments. Roan stalked to her with sullen steps, deep in thought.
"I wish you didn't have to do this." Roan said, cupping her face. She placed a gentle hand on top of his, stroking the back of his hand lightly with her thumb. This might be the last moment she could peer into those stunning blue eyes, but she wasn't upset about it.
Unlike the last time she danced with death, she was fighting for a cause, for her people. For the sake of humanity and the clans.
"This is for Azgeda, for the Coalition. I will win, Roan." She reaffirmed him with a soft smile.
"If it comes down to it, would you kill Octavia?" Roan questioned as he slid his gaze to the Skaikru warrior, socializing with Bellamy and Kane. Before she could answer, the Flamekeeper announced it was time to go.
"I love you." Bittersweetness laced their final kiss before she joined the rest of the champions placed around the city.
In that moment, she sucked in a breath, siphoning the strength of those around her.
Muffle chants calling her name and war drums echoed out as she closed her eyes. She thought about all the lives that were lost. Tilda, Lexa, Titus, Aden, Maya, Finn, all the others who died by her hands. She wouldn't let them die in vain. A distant memory that lived on in those who lived.
Then she thought of all those lives she was fighting for. Roan, Holkom, Clarke, Abby, Kane, Indra, Bellamy, Echo, Raven, Murphy, Emori, Monty. The list was never ending. All those people she could save if she won this conclave.
And if things went right, Octavia too.
There was a rooted calmness in her as she brought her sword to her face, drawing a crescent around her right eye, mimicking the ones Roan had as it interlaced with her other battle scar. One final scar, one final battle, one final waltz with death.
As she waited for the horn to blow, she shifted her weight between her feet in contemplation. Perhaps this is what fate meant all along. Her blade would not battle with the actual storm itself. No, she'd have to fight the best of the best to prove herself. To prove that the death wave may destroy the land, but not the people.
Saving humanity would be her win against Praimfaya.
So when that bugle blew, signaling the start of the Conclave, Astrid took her last steadying breath and marched into battle. White hair brushed against the tips of her shoulders as stalked through that labyrinth. Shouts of battle and metal clashing filled the street.
Immediately, she was met with the burly champion from Delfikru. Baring his teeth and unleashing an unfurled cry, he charged at her with twin blades. His arrogance was almost insulting to the Queen. As soon as she dodged that first swipe of his blade, she sent him flying into the ground with a well-placed kick along his back. Before he could flip around, Astrid pinned his body to the ground with one foot and pierced his heart. Astrid ripped the necklace off his neck before he drew his final breath.
