Dayvon massaged his temples as he sat in his car, the dashboard clock glowing with the late hour. His shift at the firehouse had stretched longer than expected—a false alarm that turned into a full-blown call, a resident who needed extra care, and a stack of reports that seemed to grow every time he glanced at them.

The day's hectic pace left him drained, to be honest, and all he wanted now was to get home and unwind. But first, he had to pick up Kasim from his parents' house and take him to Kema's.

After obviously crashing at his folks place with the little boy, Von had dragged himself out of bed at the crack of dawn for work. He'd asked his parents to watch his son while he was at the station, and they were more than cool with it of course.

And he didn't even think he'd manage to get up on time, especially after Thanksgiving the day before—it had been a wild night, and he might've had way too many drinks when meeting up with Durk because he couldn't remember shit.

Anyway, as he drove through the quiet streets, the city lights were flickering in his rearview mirror. He'd miss spending time with Kasim, especially after the fun weekend they'd had. But the weekends were his, and he looked forward to them. It was the only time he could really be a father.

Pulling into his parents' driveway, his dad's old pickup truck was parked in its usual spot; and the porch light was on, casting a soft glow on the pathway.

He had then rang the doorbell and waited, before the door opened, and his mother welcomed him with a warm smile. She instantly pulled him into a hug; the scent of her perfume welcoming his senses.

"Rough day at work? You look tired. Are you sick? Food poisoning? Hungry?"

"No ma" He chuckled as he gently removed her hands from his cheeks. She was turning his head each and every way, inspecting his face to make sure he wasn't hurt.

"I'm good. I just need to get Kasim and drop him off at Kema's. I can barely keep my eyes open"

His mom nodded and glanced toward the living room, where Kasim was playing with a puzzle. "You know, you could just ask Kema if he could stay here tonight, just so you could rest. I don't want you driving out there and you could barely keep your eyes open boy"

Von shook his head. "I wish, but you know how it is. I only get him on the weekends, and I don't want to mess up the schedule. We'll be good ma"

His mom gave him a skeptical look. "I understand. You bet not get my grandson hurt. And don't push yourself too hard, okay? You're no good to anyone if you burn out"

"I know" Von nodded, calling Kasim over. The little boy wasted no time running to him with a smile that melted away some of the stress. Although, you could tell he was tired.

"Daddy! Am I coming to your house tonight?"

"Nah lil' folks," He said, picking him up. "We gotta take you to your mom's. But imma see you next weekend fosho"
