The crispy chilly air greeted Dayvon the moment he stepped out of his two-bedroom house, his breath forming wispy clouds in front of him. He pulled his black jacket tighter around his frame, the faint scent of fallen leaves and distant bonfires lingering in the air as the city hummed with life.
Unlocking the door of his Ford Mustang, Dayvon then settled into the driver's seat before turning the key in the ignition; causing the engine to roar to life before he started to maneuver through the streets.
Today was the day he'd been looking forward to all week—a chance to spend quality time with his son, Kasim. It was a Saturday afternoon, a rare and perfect day off from Dayvon's demanding job as a firefighter.
It actually surprised everyone that Dayvon had even become a firefighter and has been in the profession for two years now. Considering his rebellious youth, many expected him to have been locked up by now, as he was known for being very hard-headed and hanging with the wrong crowd back then.
However, after the birth of his son, he was determined to turn his life around, which he successfully did. Dayvon has always been a smart man though; he earned his high school diploma through hard work and dedication.
But despite the exhaustion that often accompanied him from work, he couldn't bear the thought of letting his son down today. No matter how tired he was.
"Lil mama ah thot, and she got ass. And she gon' fuck up ah bag" He murmured the lyrics to "I Get The Bag" by Gucci Mane as he drove, guiding the wheel with his right hand while his left hand smoothed over his goatee, a feature he occasionally chose to completely trim off.
Then suddenly, the sound of his iPhone 13 ringing instantly interrupted his vibe as he turned down the radio before glancing down at the device. He saw his sister's number flashing on the screen; causing him to sigh and tap the answer button before bringing the phone to his ear.
"Wassup Kay?"
"Hey Von, what are you doing?" The woman spoke with a flat tone like she was his mother; prompting Dayvon to chuckle.
"On my way to pick up my son. Why? What's going on?"
"I'm bored as shit, that's what's going on. After you are done having yo' little time with my nephew, bring him over. I miss him"
"Mannnn, I'll think about it"
Kay's laughter echoed through the phone, indicating her disbelief in her older brother's seriousness, especially with the way he drawled out his words.
She was just a year younger than Von at twenty-eight, possessing a chubbier figure compared to their family, given that they shared the same mother but had different fathers. But as people like to call it, she was the "rich" auntie who loved to travel, spoiling her one and only nephew, and maintaining a down-to-earth demeanor and striking beauty.
