Several days had slipped by since Dayvon finally resolved that the time had come for him to have a serious conversation with Kema about their son. But the weight of this decision bore down heavily on his mind, unsure of how his baby's mother would react.
He left work earlier than usual, shedding his firefighter uniform. The lingering scent of smoke and ash clung to him as he stripped off his gear, temporarily setting aside the weight of his job to focus on the even weightier matters of family. He quickly changed into a more casual outfit—jeans and a simple black hoodie—before heading out to meet Kema at Dave & Buster's.
The decision to meet there was planned easily; it provided a place for Kasim to play and stay occupied while the two adults talked.
As he pulled into the parking lot moments later, Dayvon released a deep sigh, mentally preparing himself for the conversation ahead. He spotted Kema's car not too far from his and felt a bit edgy for some reason. This wasn't going to be easy.
Just as he was about to get out of the car and grab the small gift bag from the passenger seat, a little surprise for Kasim, his phone rang. Dayvon glanced at the screen and saw Durk's name flashing, prompting him to answer.
"Yo, what's good Durk?"
"Wassup mr beat ah nigga ass" Durk's voice instantly came through with a hint of humor and a small chuckle. "Folks ass was going crazy last night"
"On foenem, I had to" Dayvon laughed along with him.
"Had bro lying on the ground breathless. But on a real note, you and Trinity look good together. Finally nice to see you with someone again"
"Hell yeah, preciate it" Von replied, a soft smile forming as he thought about Tink.
"Aye though, I was thinking. We should hit up Gold Coast Auto Gallery tomorrow. Christmas a few days away and I need to find the perfect gift for India. Thought you might wanna do the same for Trinity"
"Fosho. We can make a trip out of it. I already got her a few things but I need one more big surprise, you feel me"
"Bet. Imma call you later with the details"
"Ight cool, I gotta go handle this thing with Kema right now anyway. Fuck"
Durk whistled and shook his head, even though his homeboy couldn't see him. "Good luck with that gang"
"Imma need it" Dayvon chuckled again, then hung up the phone before taking a deep breath, trying to steady himself for what was ahead. The brief conversation with Durk had lightened his mood a bit, so he stepped out of the car, feeling the cool winter air hit his face.
The parking lot was loud with random people heading into Dave & Buster's, their chatter and laughter echoing throughout the lot. Adjusting his coat with the gift bag in hand, he finally headed towards the entrance.
