Aarohi entered the Brew Café, where she immediately spotted her best friend Rajveer sitting at the corner table, waiting eagerly for her. She walked towards him with a heavy heart, threw her bag on the next seat in frustration, and sat down with a sulky face, clearly upset.
"Aaru, are you okay? Did something else happen at home? Did someone say anything to you? You called me here so urgently.. what’s going on? Are you alright?" he asked in one breath, his eyes filled with worry.
"Pause, Veer, pause. Let me breathe first and gather myself, then I’ll tell you everything that happened just now," she replied lazily, leaning back in her chair. After taking a moment of silence, Aarohi finally began to narrate the mess of her life to her friend.
"So… dad found out about my result, and he scolded me badly, even slapped me. I broke down crying and was overthinking for a while, but now I’m a little fine. I called you here because I needed to talk to someone who truly understands me, and you… you understand me and my situation better than anyone else."
Her voice wavered as she continued, "Why do they treat me like I don’t even belong to this family? Why can’t they love me for once... just once?" she whispered, struggling to hold back her emotions.
"They don’t deserve you, Aaru," Rajveer said softly, his chest tightening at the sight of her broken state.
"They never changed in all these years. They’re stupid enough to keep blaming a child for something so serious," he scoffed, his frustration evident.
"And you, Aaru... you shouldn’t trouble yourself by replaying his harsh words over and over. You know your dad is never going to change. It’s not new for him to pressurize you like this; all he ever cares about is his so-called reputation in society." Rajveer sighed, reaching out and gently holding her hand while she stared silently at her palm.
"He has been like this with you for ages. Don’t let his cruel words get inside your head. You’re already dealing with your health conditions, and yet you still end up burdening yourself because of his toxic comments."
Rajveer spoke with patience, trying his best to comfort her and lift her spirits. Aarohi listened to him quietly, soaking in his words.
After a long pause, she finally replied, "I know, Veer… but what can I do? No matter how they behave with me, they’re still my family. I can’t stop caring about them, and that’s why their poisonous words cut me so deeply, even though I know they haven’t changed their behavior towards me in the past sixteen years." She let out a long sigh, her eyes clouded with pain.
"Today, dad gave me a final warning," she continued bitterly. "He said if I fail to secure a top rank in college, then he will get me married off. He even said that he had done me a ‘favour’ by letting me choose hotel management as my subject, even though he still opposes my decision every single day. In reality, he wants me to join his business and handle it exactly the way your brother does." Aarohi rolled her eyes in irritation, her thoughts immediately dragging her to Aditya.
