Annabeth couldn't believe it. Her Percy was gone.
He didn't remember her. Nothing. He couldn't remember his mother, who he loved dearly. Camp Half-blood, his home away from home. He didn't even remember where he was from. All of the tension was making Annabeth sick.
As she sat next to the shore, after a grueling talk with Reyna, she felt as though a piece of her heart was missing. After six months, her whole world seemed to be falling apart. And everything she had of the Percy she knew and loved was gone. Watching the water, she couldn't help but wonder if he was ever going to be the same.
She knew it was selfish, but all she wanted was her Seaweed Brain back. But at the moment, it felt like she was never going to get him back...
"Hey." A voice said behind, making her jump. She glanced behind her to see Percy, looking concerned. His eyebrows scrunched together when he was worried. At least that never changed. "I- I saw you out here and thought you could use some company."
He was still the sweet boy she felt in love with. That was good too. "Oh, um. Thank you." She replied, her voice shaky. "But I'm alright." She turned away from him, feeling tears pooling in her eyes. As she hugged her knees, she saw Percy sit down next to her out of the corner of her eye.
"I'm sorry." was all he said.
Annabeth glanced over at him. "Why are you sorry?"
"You seemed so happy to see me. So excited. Like you've known me a long time. But I didn't recognize you. And when I asked you who you were, you were so upset. I- I didn't know what to do." He explained, looking out into the water. "I felt terrible."
Annabeth sighed. He was always more empathic than others. Always loyal. Always kindhearted. "It's not your fault. You don't have any control over any of this."
"I know. But that doesn't take away what I'm doing to you. It's probably hard just sitting next to me right now." Percy said. Annabeth bit her lip. It was hard. All she wanted was her boyfriend back. She wanted the boy she lost to run up to her and scoop her up in his arms and tell her he loved her like he did the night before he disappeared.
But that didn't happen.
"It- it is hard. But I'm sure we'll figure it out." Annabeth said. We always do. She thought to herself. Percy seemed distracted by the water, as if he was trying to find something else to say. Annabeth slowly got to her feet, hugging herself. "I'm gonna go. I've got some planning to do." She said, trying her hardest not to cry when she saw the look on Percy's face.
He seemed so lost. So, confused. And yet that loving look he had right before he disappeared wasn't there anymore. Instead, it was a look of guilt and sympathy. As Annabeth began to walk away, she heard Percy call out to her.
Percy ran towards her, walking beside her as she started for Camp Juniper. "Maybe... maybe you could help me remember?"
Annabeth stopped in her tracks. "What?"
"You told me earlier that we were dating. Before all of this. And- and I wanted to believe you. So badly. There was something inside me telling me that I knew you, but I couldn't figure it out." Percy said, talking with his hands. It was something he did when he was nervous.
