It was like nothing mattered anymore.

Life was over as he knew it. If he couldn't get to Annabeth, none of it would be worth it to him anymore.

He didn't even know how it happened. She was standing beside him only moments before, giving him that bright smile he had come to adore. All she did was go to grab her backpack and follow him back to the Argo. Except she didn't.

He heard the chilling of the monster that had defeated echo over the caves, making the ground shake and giving him the chills. And as Percy went to ask Annabeth if she was alright, he heard her scream. A bloodcurdling scream that his body shake as in a split second, he saw her disappearing towards the ledge.

"Her ankle!" he heard Piper cry, and instantly, he dove in after her. He grabbed her arms, trying not to pull them out of their sockets as he pulled up with all of his strength, being reminded of the times before when he was able to bring her to safety.

But this time he couldn't.

He saw the look her Annabeth's face of peer horror as she too tried to hold on, but whatever force that was trying to rip her away from him was too strong. But if there was one thing Percy wasn't going to do, it was let go.

It all happened so fast, but he felt his hold on the ground slip, and saw the atmosphere around him swift as he too went down into the darkness. Without even thinking about it, he grabbed onto a tiny ledge, that was barely the size of a bookshelf, and held on with complete desperation. He glanced down at the love of his life, the girl of his dreams, his everything. She had tears running down her face, but never once did she stop gazing up at him.

"Percy!" A voice screamed from above. Nico di Angelo, the quiet, gloomy kid that he had watched grow up over the years, his cousin, the one who would take his place if he died, the one who was lost in the same place he and Annabeth were dangling over. The kid who would lead the rest of them. He was the only one who could.

"Lead them, Nico. Promise me!" Percy yelled back. Nico, looking mortified, nodded slowly.

"I- I will." he mumbled.

From below, Percy held onto Annabeth as tight as he could. "Percy, let go." her voice whimpered, but there was determination in her eyes. "You can't pull us both up.

"Never." he almost shouted, feeling his hand slipping from the ledge above him. "You're not getting away from me. Never again." He had never felt so serious, so sure of anything before. Annabeth almost smiled.

"As long as we're together."

One final time, he looked up at Nico, who was now shouting for help. He heard the voices of the people he now called his friends. The ones who like him, didn't deserve to be thrown into this fight. A fight that they didn't start. A fight they could barely win. Percy peered down at Annabeth, who was starting to lose her grip.

And finally, giving her a small smile, he let go of the ledge, and they descended into the darkness.
