take me back home

in my mind i see

the morning fog shining like a prayer

and evening thunderstorms crackling like an answer

the scioto river

muddy and murky

an unspoken sanctuary on humid afternoons

goodale park in june

full of lipstick kisses and sunburned pride

high street in december

full of well-worn art galleries and snowed-in bus stops

seasons like moving still life portraits

swamplands waking like a gentle beast in the stormy spring

asphalt melting like the custard the kids eat in the sweltering summer

leaves dancing like brushstrokes in the watercolor fall

gray slush on the roadside serene like the slow-moving squirrels in the dark, comforting embrace of winter

cross country courses with man-made hills and

unknown rock raves at tiny backwater bars and

tractors and horse-drawn buggies on the highway and

low-ceilinged house parties just off campus with punk bands and girls i've never met

the quirks of columbus and akron

rural and urban and rural again

no matter where you go, fireflies still shine like the

fireworks everyone sets off in july

and nobody here understands

they laugh and laugh when i say

take me back to ohio

take me back home
