I don't remember much of middle school
But I remember that my nickname was b̶i̶t̶c̶h̶
And I remember one of my classmates in the hallway, saying
"I don't know why everyone hates you"
I remember how I hadn't been made aware of that
I remember how it became the only thing that mattered
I remember how it stuck throughout high school, until my senior year
And I remember that day most of all
Reading The Catcher in the Rye in AP Literature
There was an incident with my teacher
And a new nickname for me
F̶a̶g̶g̶o̶t̶
Shakespeare said it
What's in a name?
Nothing, William, nothing at all
And he doesn't get to be the expert on this one
Because he's never been called things like I have
His d̶e̶a̶d̶name has never made him feel so fucking terrible and unworthy and utterly small
And even now when she calls me l̶o̶v̶e̶
Calls me b̶a̶b̶y̶
It doesn't spark anything in my diseased brain
Because I had to stop caring about what people called me
I had to, to survive
And I have no idea how to get all that caring back
