Bryan's POV
With my mind so full of dreams recently, keeping myself busy was all I could do to keep my mind calm.
Work was my best distraction, when you are worrying about what could be causing someone pain or illness, it takes your mind off what could be bothering you personally, and there wasn't anyone I would rather not have on my mind than Inpu.
After all, he built a relationship that I thought I could trust, he built me up, then once we were married, a little snooping showed me I was nothing but an object to him.
Break was fun, my kids usually came to drop me off food and would sometimes spend time, but today I was left alone with my thoughts.
Something didn't feel right, the kids mentioned they made friends with a few people who seemed new in town, but how they were described was eerily close to my kids.
Being left alone with my thoughts was one of those things I hated, the last thing I needed were sour thoughts, especially at work.
My shift was nearly over, but an emergency patient was brought over.
It was a woman, clearly a victim of some kind of physical abuse, so I was called over to check on her while a few nurses rushed over to the man she was with to keep him calm.
I stepped into the room and saw she was clearly shaken up, so I started to read the chart provided before sending the nurse out of the room since she was resisting any help.
"Mind if I ask what brought you in?"
"M..my husband....he said if anything happened-"
"No one would believe you?"
"How did you know?"
"I was in a similar situation, forget what he said, and for now explain what you need"
"He hit me to the ground this morning, I haven't been able to feel my leg and hand since"
"Alright, did you hit the ground with them this morning?"
"Yes, I was just trying to avoid hitting my head"
"I'm going to take a look at them to try and figure out what could be the issue before I send you for further testing, is that ok?"
"Sounds good..."
I began to feel around her wrist and noticed she was very sensitive with it, which began to worry me since it seemed like it wasn't a brand new injury.
She was watching me the entire time, as expected, but I could tell something was on her mind.
"So did your ex ever injure you like this?"
"No, I have religious trauma, at first he would activate it, then after a while, he had me fully falling for him, but once we were married, I saw him true intentions and left as soon as I could"
"Did anything come of your relationship?"
"The last thing we did before I figured out more about him, my kids were created with both of our magic, so since they weren't fully formed, I left with them"
"They must be really lucky to have a father like you, there is a sense of calm to you that I don't think I've felt before"
"I get that a lot, all I wanted to do once getting out was helping others in similar situations, and seeing people like you get better is always a great feeling inside"
"You clearly are in the right field"
"Thank you, anyways, I'm going to have one of the nurses come in soon and take you for a few more tests, but you should hopefully be out of here in a few hours"
She just nodded and I went to put in the plan on the computer since the night doctor would end up taking over soon.
As I was headed out, I got another look at the girl's husband, who noticed me and began to walk over to me.
He was spitting the normal bs of "oh I didn't do it, she's just clumsy," but I wasn't buying it, I was just trying to head out, but that was until I noticed a familiar mark on his neck.
Something I never thought to consider before, the higher ups in the cult had Inpu's symbol on his neck, a sort of sign they are highly trusted in the cult.
I tried to ignore it, but he stopped me again before I left, trying to convince me to meet with the cult.
This guy was clearly on something, and I knew he had access to the harder drugs they used in the cult, so before I left, I created a warning for the staff to say he could be dangerous.
Once I left, I was keeping a close eye on the mirror of my car, the last thing I needed was someone following me home, and thankfully, no one did.
Like normal, I went inside and locked the door with both the normal lock and the chain.
Since I was taking a bit of a longer shift to cover someone, the kids were already asleep when I got home, so I just went into my office and began to note some of the good things that happened during the day.
My therapist told me to keep a journal of good things I see every day just to remind myself of what I'd be missing if I decided to neglect myself because of how fragile I was when I was first free.
I was cleared to stop doing it, but I realized that I really enjoyed it and looked forward to the little bit of writing I did at the end of the day, so I kept it up.
As I was writing, I heard a familiar voice in the back of my head.
Inpu's voice was clearly talking as if he were in the room, but as I looked around, he wasn't there, but he was talking to me.
"You know, gem, its rude to not answer someone when they speak to you~"
"What do you want?"
"Isn't it clear? I want you~"
"Yeah, to kill me..."
"Oh, I wouldn't say that, all I want is your power so I can regain mine, is it that much to ask for?"
"How are you even speaking to me now?"
"The ritual, it may not allow me to see where you are, but it allows me to speak with you as I please"
"Then leave me alone, I don't need you"
"Ouch, no need to be so cruel, I'm sure Crystal wouldn't appreciate it"
"How do you-"
"You really are clueless, just because I can talk to you doesn't mean I always do, I've been trying to listen to you and find you for the past year, I just figured it was a good time to let you know"
"Leave me and my kids alone! I didn't need you then, I don't need you now!"
"Are you so sure about that? You seemed pretty needy when-"
"I was in love with you! You ruined that! Had you told me your intentions the day we met, I probably would've just listened, I was ready to go into one of the realms of the dead, you would've just delayed that"
"You know, I was preparing you so it likely would just be tiring, after a while, I didn't want you dead, now you're just asking for it"
I didn't have a chance to respond, Inpu's voice disappeared not long after.
Panic began to set in, so I quickly ran to each of the kids' rooms to check on both of them.
Upon entering Artemis' room, I couldn't keep it in any longer and I softly began to break down.
All I wanted to do was sleep, but before I could, I grabbed some baby monitors from when they were little and set them up so I'd hear anything that happened in the night.
It took me a few hours to fall asleep, but when I did, I still felt uneasy.
